Clone Kitchen by StormCat

[raw]
made by StormCat for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

A cooking/platformer where you work with a team made of your past selves in order to run a kitchen. title.png Due to a lack of money on the manager's part, you will be cloned in order to create extra labour. Every 20 seconds a clone will spawn who will repeat exactly what you did in the last 20 seconds, and will then keep repeating those actions.

In the game there are 40 different foods that can be made or used as ingredients, along with 3 different appliances used to create new foods, the Frying Pan, Chopping Board and Mixing Bowl. Work to create and deliver food and rack up as much money as you can to fill your empty pockets.

This is my first Ludum Dare (and compo at that) so I would love some feedback on how I did.

For those on Mac, it seems that the current version of the game is not working.

Having your past selves steal your lettuce and proceed to cook it on a grill is one of the most chaotically funny things I have ever seen. The game is very unstable however and the tutorial is long and unskippable.

@amin-jk000 were you using the mac version? If so it is untested as I do not have a mac.

Tried running the mac version but it says it's damaged. Let me know if you fix it, the concept sounds great!

good: cute sprites, very interesting concept, it seems very amusing :)

bad: it skipped the tutorial (even when I lost and clicked the tutorial button) so I barely knew what I was doing... >< also, the background is very plain, and all of the gameplay elements felt super small compared to the environment. I think these two things compounded somewhat. also, I suppose it's "loop-y", but I'm not sure about the "stuck" part... ^^

The tutorial doesn't seem to work. Everytime I start it, I just instantly get "Ok, that's everything". I watched @renge stream and realized you had to double-jump, hold e, and submit things on the bottom portal dealies. I'm sure all of that would have been explained in the tutorial, but it would be nice to have it on the LD web page since the tutorial seems to be buggy.

Now once I actually figured out how to play the game, it was really fun! It's like Overcooked with a twist! I am not sure my clones every did anything helpful; I was mostly just fighting them for my own ingredients. Still, it was fun to watch! Very neat concept!

@indivicivet @nick-rafalski Sorry about that issue. The updated version was created post jam release, and I accidentaly skipped the tutorial due to debugging. It now works fine, although you can fast-forward the tutorial with enter if you want

@stormcat ok, now that I've seen the tutorial I can actually play it properly, and it's fun and amusing :>

now that I know what you're supposed to do, I think some more ingame stuff would make a tutorial way less necessary. e.g. you already have a popup bar over the chopping board, you could pop up "hold C to chop" above it, etc for delivery station etc. I think also labelling all of the stations would've also be good :)

seems like it's very much designed for arrow keys + ZXC controls? for the WASD controls I think I'd prefer some keys for right hand, since I'm not using it for anything otherwise ^^

@indivicivet I suppose it does seem like that, but I actually played the game with WASD myself. I do think the right hand having controls is a good plan though

great idea! at first it wasn't clear how the past cooks would work, but it turned out hilarious!

I had some trouble with the controls. Space is usually jump so I kept getting that mixed up. I feel like there should be a bar at the bottom of the screen to indicate you can jump down there, I thought I was going to fall through the air. Another quality of life thing might be an arrow that points out the new things popping up. I didn't even notice the cutting board at first, I thought it was talking about the brown box in the center. Otherwise it's an interesting concept.

A nice concept an with more time I think this could turn into something great. The tutorial was a bit too long. I enjoyed my time in the kitchen

I loved how you made the tutorial
But the main Part was a little bit chaotic for me ( maybe i'm just bad, but i think the items spawn to fast, and sometimes the clones were bringing items in the wrong direction :( )
The SFX you made was incredible, and graphics were simple, but very effective.
Overall it was great and the way you see the theme was original ( and that's cool )

Tutorial is a bit too long, but it was a nice introduction. I would like to have more goals for the clones, instead of just being an obstacle to deliver other dishes as the game progresses, but I think this was the purpose of them. Fun game though! Congratz!

A very creative idea! Although the clones just repeat the player's actions, they always lead to unexpected results, which brings much fun. Personally I hope that the game mechanics can support a higher fault tolerance. Now once any ingredient is wasted, the chance of finishing a dish becomes very small.

Honestly one of the most fun, chaotic and enjoyable games I've played this game jam so far! Loved the idea, and once it got to a few too many clones on the screen at once I had to just stop and enjoy the chaos on the screen, which was the best part. Awesome job!

The Mac version won't open (generic error, "The application can't be opened"). I'll try to get on a PC later because this game looks really cool!

Great game! The chaos and watching my clones do the wrong thing reminded me quite a bit of playing overcooked with friends.

I came back to play this on PC as promised. The tutorial is very thorough and well-appreciated. I found something about the controls didn't stick with me, I kept forgetting jump was W and hold was Space because in many games space is also jump. Anyway, what a weird and funny game! At first I was mad because the clones were ruining everything, but then I found the chaos to be really, really funny. I made $41... sad.

The mac version works great! 75% of LD47 mac games have required the following two steps to get them to run (which is weird)
1. `chmod +x Clone-Kitchen.app/Contents/MacOS/*` removes the "this application can't be opened" problem
2. Right click -> Open -> Cancel -> Right Click -> Open -> Open to get around the security of the mac gatekeeper
