Keep My Keep Alive by Thooom

[raw]
made by Thooom for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

This is my first Ludum Dare game. I did a "safe choice" and went with some easy gameplay that will test the quickest fingers. My focus for this game was to get the estetique right. I spent about half the time to get this game to look the way I envisioned it.

Your need to click "public" on itch.io to publish your game

Hi. Thank you @corporation

Also thanks for notifying me @bilbycoder @generalsturgeon @dinaharison @shubh

I set the thing on itch to public so it should work now. Rookie mistakes were made :(

Fun typing game. Would recommend spreading to the entire keyboard. Music didn't suck, so I turned the volume right up. Congratulations on finishing the game in 48 hours.

Really nice idea! Could make it a full typing defence game) Adding some purchasable upgreades and effects (like particles and sound on death) and it will be really nice game

Great job! Loved the artwork, especially the monsters. Needs some kind of quit button, otherwise a very nice game!

Nice game, I like the art a lot! I think some feedback when you type a correct letter would be nice, I found it a little confusing when there where multiple of the same letter in a row.

@thooom - no Web build? is it possible to make one?

@purpledartfrog I will make one today I think, this was my first LD and I only noticed now that it seems like "everyone" is making web builds. Hopefully it's allowed to put out a web build afterwards.

@thooom "Porting (especially to Web or Windows) can happen after the initial 48 hours. The longer you wait though, the less time participants will have to play your game." from the rules :)

Anyway cool game! The only thing I found annoying was when killing multi key enemies and they require you to click the same key twice in a row - not super clear! Would be great to have an effect when it generates a new key or something :)

Great work!

Nice and simple, would have benefited significantly from additional feedback (as some others have said) and sounds but I think its a great little starter for getting started with touch typing. I like the "progression" of multiple letters per monster but without feedback that a monster has been 'hit' (visual, audio etc) the repeated letters feel a bit strange (almost like keypresses are just missed).

Also definitely use a different font. This took too much time trial and error to work out it was a d:

![letter.png](///raw/c46/81/z/2d36c.png)

(I can see it as a capital D now but I thought it might be bugged initially as I was thinking lower case! Assumed b or p, possibly even a initially)

Nice work overall though. Kind of inspired me to consider making similar games for my kids!

@johnjoemcbob Oh that is good news. I tried making a port but somehow it ended up being very zoomed in compared to my Windows version. Will just have to look into that.

@mickm That is great feedback. I might work a bit more on this game when the compo is over. My first ever LD just happened to land om the weekend of my wife's birthday so I only got to spend like 10-12 hours on it :/ The feedback on getting key presses right was something I had in mind, but I only had time to give feedback on bad presses, that was a tad easier.

Nice looking game, I like the art style and think its a good mechanic for the theme too.
I'd like some indication that I'd hit the right key, as if the same key needs to be pressed multiple times for the same monster it can be hard to tell if I hit the right key or not.
Also I ran into an error, but its a two day game jam game so forgivable.
A good LD entry.

Great idea, I suggest using a different font as other said. I liked the idea of punishing a bad press stooping you for a few seconds avoiding people pressing every single button. Good job!

@thooom perfect - thanks and yes I would think it's allowed as long as you haven't changed the actual game

I had a problem with the speed of letter matching ... it seems it lacks a little bit behind - but otherwise very nice entry :thumbsup_tone1:

Congratulations on the entry :thumbsup_tone1:

Added web player now, for some reason when I put it on itch.io it gets zoomed in and you can't see the full screen. Found this page called simmer.io and it works like a charm there. Thanks for all feedback. If I had more time I would definitely add more feedback to correct key presses, add the full keyboard and perhaps throw in some harder monsters with some new mechanics.

You combine common letter logic game mechanic with tower defense game, interesting idea, still buggy but it works and its under 48 hours so good job :)

Quite enjoyed this one; the difficulty ramps up perfectly until I was making mistakes (the pausing is a good idea) and my keep was destroyed.
I think you only used the 6 letters QWEASD, so might be worth expanding to the full keyboard, or potentially aiming for gamepads (4 fire buttons + usually 4 triggers/shoulder buttons).
It popped up a developer console at some point with an index out of range exception, but I'm afraid I don't know what I did to trigger that.

@amkingTRP Thanks for the feedback. I know about the out of range exception, I never had it on the Windows-version, at least not in the editor - it started showing up when I ported it. I only used QWEASD for now. My original idea was that different monsters have different keys. For instance flying had QWER and ground monsters have ASDF, and I wanted a "boss mob" that spawn smaller mobs that utilzed a 3rd way of input. I like your GamePad idea tho. Pause has to be there to prevent faceroll tactics xD
