Broken Mower by DigitalCrest

[raw]
made by DigitalCrest for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

It was a close one, but I made it! This my entry for Ludum Dare 47. The theme was "stuck in a loop", so I made a game about a robot mower stuck in a forward moving loop which have to be turned by the player. The initial plan was to make it working for mobile, but as a novice my time was spent figuring out basics. But I'm content with the result, and at least it has the core elements of a game.

There is no grand goal in the game, just to get as many patches of grass cut as possible within the time until the battery runs out (unfortunately you can only reach 31 tiles before the battery runs out, and there are no power ups to charge it). The game starts immediately, but if I had a bit more time or skill I had added a delay or start screen. I still learned a lot during this LD, hopefully some time I can even participate in the compo.

I participated in the jam alone. All assets are done by me with Krita (art) and LMMS (sound). screenshots.png

Is there a way to regain battery? I feel like I have hit the high score by scoring 31 on the first try...

Actually I really liked the aesthetics of the game, especially the grass moving as it is cut down!

Very nice pixel art on this one, it reminds me of the good old gameboy advance days.

It seems like the highest possible score is 31, someone correct me if im wrong there. I would love to play an updated version of this where its possible to gain fuel somehow and maybe some more maps with increasing difficulty progression. You could have a map with rocks in some tiles for example that you have to drive around.

Lots of potential, would love to see an update to this! Good job with what you have so far!!

Unfortunately power ups and the like didn't make it to the end product, but they were definitely one of the ideas when brainstorming this. @jojopalambas Personally I see this as more of a prototype and a study piece to improve my solo developing skills, but I'm glad if it's enjoyable to try.

Great job! All the sprites and sound effects fit really well together! As @jojopalambas has brought up, 31 seems to be the max highscore, unless you could regain battery (maybe a feature you could add in the future?) Overall great work though!

I agree with everyone else, the graphics are amazing! If you ported this to mobile with a recharge mechanic and maybe different stages, I could totally see it doing well. Great entry!

I miss some kind of variety on this, maybe some random rocks in the path? Because I feel like there's one optimal path and it is very easy to get right on the first glance. But it was a job very well done considering you did all by yourself!

I've been thinking about making a robo vacuum game some day. Maybe I'll take some inspiration from this game :robot:

Something really relaxing about your game. Is it possible to cut all the grass before the battery runs out? That is why will keep playing until I find the answer.
