Rocket Maniacs by shp

made by shp for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

Welcome to Rocket Maniacs, the most dangerous and extreme game show on the planet!

In this game show the rules are simple. The contestant will have to reach the prize money on a rocket powered hover board with a bomb strapped to his back. To keep himself alive he must keep his momentum alive or the bomb will blow up. Very simple.

In today's episode the contestant must traverse through rooftops of Neo Helsinki, the prize money is hidden high up on top of a crane. Can he keep his momentum alive or will he blow up? Stay tuned to find out! Let's get started!

The game is kind of a 3D platformer set on city rooftops. You must keep your momentum up to reach the goal.

Controls: Mouse / Arrows to steer, W / Up to boost, S / Down to brake, Space to jump.

Source code is included in the game/src directory under MIT in all the downloads.

NOTE: I made a post-compo hotfix to fix a game breaking visual glitch on Nvidia hardware. If you downloaded before 20th April, 9am UTC, make sure to download the fixed version!

I like the idea and graphical style, it is appealing !
However there are a lot of LOD bugs (some elements are disappearing even when you are close to them) !

@munmungames thanks! I'm doing a hotfix to fix that since it's a bit game breaking... apparently this game doesn't like nvidia hardware

you should make it alter your direction when you slam on the ground like DriFTinG

Now thats really addictive and frustrating. Could not make it to the end, when i got to the cloud things it became impossible to my poor skills to handle, and even getting to there cost a thousand deaths.

That said, the game is insanely fun. Not that i expected less from @shp from the previous jams but damn. Neat graphics, cool music/sfx, responsive controls. Well, the whole package.

Excellent job again. Keep up the good work.

Really impressive for a COMPO game, there is a menu setting to configure control, sound etc that's perfect. The game remind me trickstyle/MirrorEdge a parkour game with overboard, sensation was good but control are a bit rigid maybe because the turns is tight/square. Amazing work !

@derek-volker thank you a lot for the compliments and feedback!

@robowarrior1982 thanks!

@week-of-the-agents almost! it's based on the quake 1 engine, which half-life is based on ;)

A very impressive effort, especially for a Compo entry. Fun gameplay with just enough challenge that it frustrated you to try harder and succeed (which I did eventually). Neat clean graphics and extra points for the intro finglish.

Solid stuff. Excellent job.

This city reminded me the old Spider-Man game on PS1 so I spent little more time playing the game than expected. Good job.

Even with customizing controls to use gamepad (awesome for a compo game btw) I couldn't get past neo-Helsinki, but it was a very neat game. Super cool for a compo entry.

I’m impressed! It took a little while to figure out exactly how to maneuver effectively, but that’s my only real complaint. The graphics really remind me of PS1-era games, which seems appropriate for what it is. The sound works out pretty well, too. I don’t know if the accent is acted or if it’s the way you normally talk, but either way it fits the style pretty well too.

If I had to provide some constructive suggestions, I’d make it more visible when you’re starting to go too slow, perhaps by having the rocket itself flash instead of just the speed. To take it to the next level I’d consider adding some stunts.

Vittusaatana was this great fun :D

Very much appreciated the intro with finnish accent.
I was confused at about the third checkpoint though. I didn't know where to go, somehow the buildings led me back to where I was.
Oh, and Windows at first didn't let me run it because it suspected a virus, thought you should know.

Would be incredible work for a jam-game, but as it is a compo game even, I'm at a loss of words. Very nice stuff!

Holy crap this is very impressive for a compo entry! Creating all this code and amazing art/animation in 48 hours? Ambitious and incredible! Very well done. It even has sound effects and decent music! Awesome job, I am very impressed! The only thing it's really missing is some visual indication of checkpoints.

Props for voiceover. Native Linux version is **very** much appreciated. Also, good to see a different game engine amidst the sea of Unity/Gamemaker games.

Game difficulty is sadistic. You should consider awarding achievements for beating the game. (wonders if creator beat the game)

The post game message was slightly disappointing after the effort taken to get there, but understandable given the nature of LD. After beating the game, the game doesn't kill you on slowdown anymore. Would be nice to see time taken and number of deaths after winning. Also, speedrun and onelife achievements.

Thanks a lot for the feedback guys!

@jusw85 well done completing it :) Indeed the ending is a bit rushed, I was planning on something nicer but I ended up spending lots of time on a mechanic that I had to cut because it didn't work, and it didn't leave me enough time for a better ending :p

(Also funny enough, I set out to make a game that wouldn't be too hard this time, but failed at it again lol, I can still play the entire game in one take without letting go of boost!)

Quite a lot of AV software is marking your exe as a malware.
Unfortunatelly, I won't install it. If there's a HTML5 version in the future, feel free to ping me about it.

Amazing game! Wish there was more. Really challenging. I like the fact you need to time jumps precisely, it's one of those games that is easy to figure out, but hard to master, like Wipeout. Reminds me graphically of Tony Hawks Pro skater games a bit. And I wish it was a bit faster maybe. Failing really becomes quickly frustrating and makes the game repetitive and "feel slow". Wish you could mouse-look around freely in both axis and not just one axis. Maybe it would be nice to add some wall riding/jumping as well? Also, I felt the platform clouds are very off-putting, didn't match the techno-industrial style of the rest of the game. Also great to see a custom-quake-like engine, I assume?

Really great game! I found it very hard at first but once you get used to the controls there's a lot of neat tricks you can do. I loved the voice acting and the music, really a banger of a game.
