We've Got Nothing by Doey

[raw]
made by Doey for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

Made by Chris Prendergast & Dan Horne Just two guys havin' fun. Enjoy. The game follows our thought process in coming up an answer to this Dare's theme... realising we had nothing better to think of, we made it about not having anything better to think of. WASD to move, left click to shoot when able. Right click to shield when playing the final character.

Will add source code when able!

Easy to figure out controls, my only question is, is that huge jump possible? lol

the second screen, with the wizard seemed pretty bugged out to me. i had three different problems on three different lives that prevented me from really getting the level stared, let alone completed.

but the humor and dialogue in the background was funny, as were the sound effects, but too much longer and it could have become quite annoying.

I also thought the pixel art was nice and the theme was used well.

@fizzpowmike1 It should be possible! I probably made it a little too difficult though; I spent so much time playing through the game that I probably didn't compensate for people who hadn't been making it. I'll have to improve my level design skills!

Great idea and implementation of the theme(voices in background make it so much better). Jumping was well balanced challanging the player but not making me rage quit after falling 3 times from the same spot. One thing: character doesn't follow the mouse direction for shooting.
Overall solid entry.

@brtek007 @ljol3 Yeah, we were aware of the issues with the wizard level - we struggled a fair bit with actually coming up with a viable idea that the actual execution of it could have been improved a fair bit.

Thanks for the feedback though, we're definitely taking it on board!

I think I got pretty far in the game. I almost finnished the part with the guys shooting at me. It was quite fun but I have some suggestions.

- Make the game in browser allways fullscreen on itch.io. You can do it in the settings. You can't see the whole screen if not.
- Change the jump button from "Space" to "W/Up arrow key".
- If you guys decide to continue with this game here is a video for better controls https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFsJIrm2btU&t=229s. Right now it feels like you are on ice.

Besides that I loved the idea and your voices in the background.

Played through to the end (well, I think it was the end - it just stopped).
That double jump right across the screen on the first level was way too hard for first level - I almost gave up.
The commentary was great. Good fun!

@vlad-ilisan Taking that on board, can't say I've done a whole lot with platformers in the past so that's much appreciated. Have to say that we know the selling point is definitely whatever humour we could attempt. Still, fun experience!

@avzgui @space-wumpus Didn't realise how difficult we made it until we got some people to play after finishing! Will definitely have to get others to playtest in future.

I found the same with my game - had no time for subtleties like difficulty balancing and playtests!

cool idea, i like the addition of different skills/mechanics. my only gripe is with the loose/floaty controls, but thats more of a personal preference. overall very fun!

This is a really cool concept, however I got stuck because at the beginning the wizard requires the double-jump and it was removed as I fell off of the platform so I could no longer jump to it xD

That was a fun one! The controls were a little tricky (due to size of stuff), but not unpredictable.
Really good use of the theme.
