Journeys to the Spire by C0nt

[raw]
made by C0nt for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

In honour of our friend, Tihke Tuvi, who got sick and couldn't attend.

"You look around and see my valleys stretch out in all directions. You are a stranger here. I date back to a time that did not know life. My air is holy, my ground is dust.
Your history can be measured in the years of these here mountains surrounding you. As the rains and winds hewed them, your kind came to be. The five-million-year history of your ancestors is one of endless repetition, where each child’s life was a perfect reproduction of the lives of their parents. Your time was a circle. I was given many names across your cycles."

I like the idea !
Unfortunatly i don't have a QWERTY keyboard so i struggled to get it running, couldn't play with the arrows !
Would love to try it out again with some improvements !

I am not entirely sure what's going on, but everything I think I understand looks pretty interesting. I would like to see the full lore behind this game ;)

I really like the concept but I find it a bit confusing. The art is good

The orientation in the game is a bit confusing but I still liked the idea a lot. Great art!

I didn't really understand it but it still was well done.

This reminds me of my youngness when i was playing "Sapience". The idea is really interresing. It misses just a little feedback to understand why and when new characters born or die. Thank you for your game

This was a really neat idea!. When I found a bunch of large animals (I think buffalo?) my population exploded until I ate up all the food. Eventually I found the spire as well. Very original and well executed interpretation of the theme.

I like the idea, but as other people have mentioned, it is difficult to understand what to do, and why. Seeing the life cycles play out was an interesting touch, but people tend not to reproduce asexually outside of this game. It might be nice to have the camera more zoomed out to see what might be worth heading towards. Because it was not clear what I might be able to do, and what my interactions achieve, I played for less time than I would have if I was playing this with a dev to hand to answer my questions and explain things.

Hope your friend gets well soon! This was really interesting. I wasn't actually sure what I was doing or what influenced a baby being born, but I enjoyed the minimalist aesthetic, the sound effects and the attention to detail in the naming of certain places. Nicely done!

I liked the concept and the art, cool take on the theme! I think some animation when moving beetween tiles, even just sliding would make everything a little more clear.

Great job!

The music is nice and chilling, but I couldn't understand very well how the game worked, how you have births and stuff, and couldn't find anything more than just water or chickens or mountain.
Also, if you move fast it's a bit disturbing.

Nonetheless nice work =)

Edit:
I played it again after reading the comments and after 3 or 4 cycles i ended up spawning next to the spire lol

I like the feeling of being lost and having to explore, but here may be too much, I just feel I move randomly and the rules for new babies are hard to understand (water or chickens seems to not work).

I really liked the idea, but without knowing the rules of how the tribe reproduces, it's a bit difficult to play.
Also, @samuel-hollywood-summers "people tend not to reproduce asexually outside of this game" :D :D :D

@lunareffect & @toccio94 thanks you and everyone else for the detailed feedback! I will for sure pass on the well wishes to my friend.

I think @shubart and @criggles hit the nail right on the head. If I were to start the jam over, I would focus a bit less on adding more stuff to the game and focus more on giving feedback to the player through animations and sound. It would have helped to have an indicator for when your tribe member has an increased birth rate. There being no gameplay instructions was definitely a conscious choice though.

The orientation could also have benefitted from the camera being larger just as @samuel-hollywood-summers said. The next thing I would have added is the ability to talk to your hominid brethren, who could give you directions towards the spire. But since this was never implemented, we should have compensated with the camera instead.

@enad96 What you encountered were apes. While morally repugnant, consuming them seems to have been an effective survival strategy!

@diego-teran I love it that this is the first comment. Thank you, @primalshadow, and @tamail for compliments on the art.
@twilight-world I hope that despite the confusion you still got something unique out of it.

I have no idea what's going on, but that actually made for very calming experience. I love the elder naming places thing, it actually makes lot of sense, no matter what is going on :) I had no sense of orientation though, the game started with zoomed out, but zoomed more in eventually, so most of the time, I saw just green grass and my character slowly heading to demise. So even when I tried just to name stuff with elders, I didn't know where to go or what to do. Also I didn't know how or where the babies were born, so lot of confusion. But it was being lost in a pleasant way, somehow :) Good job! :)

Hello,
Very interesting game! The graphic is simple, but it has its own special look, and I like it.
The music is good, it helps the mood.
I have two problems with the game, the first one is that I didn't understand exactly what I should do in the game. The second one is that the movement feels a little bit like there's a low FPS in the game.
Overall, a very smart and deep idea, and the game itself is really cool and relaxing.

I heard about your OpenGL journey, good luck with that and with this game!

Intriguing concept although I also had problems fully understanding it. Adding a tutorial or instructions (even vague ones) would help a lot. I liked the general atmosphere, although the lack of smooth movement made it hard to tell what was happening sometimes due to the world around you changing while moving.

Very nice and unique idea, how the player moved around and the way the map moved with it was a little hard to look at but i understand why you did it this way!

The central mechanic really struck me as a unique idea, and the tile-based gameplay made it feel a lot like a rogue-like to me, perhaps mixed with some of the early Civ games! I can certainly see the scope for expanding this idea, great work! :grinning: My only suggestion would be (as others have said) to include a tutorial level to explain gameplay to players in practice.

Oh! This was so depressing, the worst thing I see that I was able to make a new baby alone! haha
Great idea, I remembered there was also a mmorpg with a similar idea that came out on steam.
