GUIDE

Introduction

Seven Nights is a roguelike survival game where you play as Lupin. A castaway on a mysterious island, a home to the All Tree. Your goal is to survive seven nights, but beware of the dark as murky Seafolks will emerge from the depths of the sea. Their goal is to destroy The All Tree and anything that stands in their way to achieve it. You must hunt, gather and craft to overcome the enemy. The faith of the entire surface world is in your hand. All the land above the surface is held together by the strong, old roots of the All Tree, and with it’s gone, the world you know will be too.

1)HP counter for Lupin and the Tree. Red bar represents Lupins health, the blue Bar represents the tree's condition. While Lupin will recover small chunks of missing HP after each night, Tree will not. Three empty slots under the blue bar represents levels of protection the tree can have. The more it has the less damage it will receive with each strike.

2)Day counter. Shows current day in the game since the start.

3)Action slots. Slots with equipped items will show their icons and highlight when used. You equip items via inventory.

4)If an item can be picked from the ground it will have a glowing outline around it.

5)If Lupin can use an item on an object or element of the environment, a blue question mark will show above his head. It will show up regardless if Lupin has the item for the interaction in his inventory or not.

Crafting Station and Inventory

To enter crafting Lupin has to interact with the wood chopping section in the camp.

2.png 3.png

1)Ingredients used for crafting, you can enter max three, though some recipes call for only two. Currently if a player enters three items, and only two are required to craft an item, the game will ignore the third ingredient and only use those two.

2)Crafted slot. When required ingredients will be slotted, new item will show up here. When player confirms by pressing INTERACTION, item will automatically be moved to the player's inventory. Please remember if player have required items for the recipe but not required amounts (ex. Recipe asks for 3 red flowers and the player only has 2), nothing will show up in the crafted slot.

3)All items held by the player in his inventory. To choose an item for crafting simply choose from the list by pressing the INTERACTION key. Item will automatically be placed in the first free ingredient slot. If there are no free slots other items needs to be taken out to free the slot. To do it find one of the slotted items in your list and press the INTERACTION key.

4)Inventory list .All items held by the player in his inventory.

5)Action slots. To equip item in any of the three slots, simply the player must choose an item from the inventory, and press any of the ACTION SLOTS keys.

6)Item description. Currently chosen item (it’s name, icon and short description) will show up here. Pay attention to the description as some may contain hints on what to do.

7)Equipment slots. Some items can be equipped, rising toughness and movement speed of the player. Those items will be slotted here. To slot those items, simply choose them from the inventory list and press the INTERACTION key.

Gameplay flow

Playable area is made out of four zones. Camp, Crossroads, Beach and Gathering Grounds.

Camp contains the All Tree, crafting station and a bed. If you want to end the day simply interact with bed to advance to the next day.

Crossroad is the smallest and least busy area in the game. As the name suggests it mostly connects all the other areas together.

Beach is where you start. It may not have many natural resources but every day there is a chance sea will wash ashore something. Better to keep an eye on it.

Gathering Grounds. Now this is where most of the action takes place, at least during the day. Players can gather here many resources needed to beat the game.

Known bugs and problems

Game has many known bugs, sadly we run out of time on many things we wanted to add or polish, like an in game tutorial.

-Sometimes question mark can get stuck for some time above Lupins head.

-Some sprites may displayed on the wrong sorting layer

-When hit by a Seafolk, player may be stuck where he receives dmg constantly even though the enemy is dead or far away, basically causing player death and restart of the game. Yeah we know it is bad, and we are working on fixing it. Gladly it only happened once so far.

Gorgeous pixel art and lovely music! Crafting isn't my thing, and I could've used a bit of guidance for what to do in the game. However it looks and feels really great so I think it is well worth working at more :)

A list of possible crafting recipes would be nice, I didn't had a clue what I was doing, I collected a lot of stuff but didn't know what to craft.

The graphics and audio are really nice though and the movement is very responsive.

I don't know how to heal ;=;!

It would be useful if player got crafting recipes. But I liked the gameplay and graphics.

@wischi @kosmik123 Yeah we hear you guys. To be honest what you guys seen was like maybe 30% of the original design. We would love to add crafting recipes but we run out of time, and we had many more important stuff to finish first, that were necessary for the players to be able to beat the game. We will continue working on it more though and post our progress on itch.io ,

PS also you can heal by either crafting healing potion or by sleeping, though sleep only recovers small amount of your HP.

Lovely art and peaceful music. Was quite scared of the night section. I guess the mechanics seem quite imposing at first and I can see you put lots of detail into explaining them on this page. I would say the i key for inventory is a bit far away from where my hands are comfortable, maybe 'E' would have been better. Anyway a very ambitious title and you did a good job!

The art and music are great, but the game is hard to understand. I've figured out that you select an item in the inventory and then press 1,2,3 to equip it, and equip the stick as a weapon to kill enemies. I couldn't figure out how to access the crafting bench, but this is *obviously* done with space (not enter). So, for the recipes I just have to try every possible combination to discover them? That seems like a lot of grinding. I tried a bunch, but couldn't discover any. Now I also don't know what I need to collect to make anything or what things I can make in the first place. I think I had around six different items: stick, note, leaf, some flora and the green enemy.

@mika-la-grand what is not very obvious is that you can't do everything on day one, actually you can't really do that much on the first day. Some items show up later on, that's why you need to progress nights.

@bigwhiteshogun I didn't mean in the game, you could list possible recipes in the description in text form.

@wischi you mean possible items to craft, or literally what you made with what ? If it's a list of items, yeah I don't see it being a bad thing. But spoiling how to make stuff is like basically telling how to beat a game and spoil what is in our opinion a core part of our game. The feel of discovery.

Well done ! The art of your game is awesome and I love the mood. I think it's pretty hard to understand what we need to do without read your description. Maybe a tutorial can be very cool to introduce the game.

Really loved the feel of the game in terms of art and sound. It took a bit to learn what to do, so maybe a tutorial or something would have helped. I fell into the same problem with my game, I wished I would have had some on screen direction. Very pretty game tho, Great work.

Loved the visuals and the graphics, found the controls a bit tricky though and didn't understand what to do at first. Once I'd figured out what to do I did have fun with it. Good job!

Team, tell me somehting: Is there a boot upgrade available? I think i tried everything to upgrade it! hahaha I liked the game a lot! Great visuals and music. only the battle gave me some trouble to hit the enemies, i dont know if its due the character movement or the hitbox from my sword (that i upgraded 2 times, he he he). It feels a big game already, with full of possibilities! Great entry! Congratulations!
OBS: I didnt understand the red totem (ok, the last night was red, as the harvest moon, but is it?)

@boyturnedrobot @nurk there was no time for tutorial, but it's certainly a thing we will add in post-jam expanded version of the game

@welliton thanks for the exhausting feedback. There's no upgrade for boots. Battle system is not the main point of the game, that's why it may seem clunky. Red totem was cut-off in the end, but we forgot to update the item description. It brings a big smile to my face to hear questions like these about the game. It means our entry was enjoyable enough to pay attention to details

@g-a-gamestudio I can understand frustration from trying to figure out recipes yourself. I was hesitant about this part of the game as well. We didn't have enough time to think about smart way to give player recipes, or guide him about potential ingredients combinations. We were afraid that giving too guidance would kill fun from playing and figuring out stuff yourself.

Wow, this is almost like a finished game! all of the sprites are great and some are nicely animated, Sounds and Musics are suits very well, The mechanics are implemented perfectly, the controls are good enough, etc. But there is one thing missing, The direction, the game just start without any guide or tutorial at least give the players the objectives that would be more playable. While playing I also got weird bug, when the enemy starts attacking me it will always hit me when I keep a distance, it's like a poison debuff. Also not to mention that this game is suits the theme well, especially for a survival game. Overall this game is almost perfect!

Really beautiful artstyle and lovely calm atmoshphere! Even after reading through the instructions a couple times, I could not figure out how to use the crafting menu properly or any real goals to work towards. Maybe possible crafting recipes would be of help as I spent time cycling through items and coming up short everytime. I would like to give this game another go in the future :)
