THE BOX by ReboundGames

[raw]
made by ReboundGames for LD36 (COMPO)
I've been making an ARG recently so I have puzzles on the brain. What's in the box? You'll just have to find out. Apologies to people who hate riddles (or slide puzzles).

If you're having trouble figuring it out, you need to rearrange the letters so that the middle row spells out the word.

Pre-rendered animations were done in blender, and rendered on my painfully slow GTX750ti.

Simple idea but well executed. Could have worked a little more with the looping background sound though. Well done.

Solved all the puzzles! I really liked it. The word puzzles themselves were good, which was definitely key to the game's enjoyment. I really like the scramble aspect though, as it really helped me figure out what some of the harder ones were. I think this worked out super well because it meant you could have relatively hard word puzzles but use the letters as clues to the player. Great game!

Don't like shifting puzzles, therefore: Thanks for making the solutions pretty easy/not many moves from the initial position.

It's a nice little game... only tried to get the word "Basilisk" once before checking which letters are actually available :p

Super slick looking graphics, and, I have to say, sliding puzzles are a secret pleasure of mine (something nostalgic about them).

Perhaps a double meaning of "Ancient Technology!"

Wow, this is actually one of the best and most polished games I've seen so far. :D
I can't think of anything wrong with it.

I suck at riddles, but at least I have the excuse that I am not native English speaker. I got stuck at third and had to check the code for solutions. Nice graphics, clever riddles.

Wow, that was a really good experience. I do admit I chose to cheat and look at the source for answers for a few. I don't like slide puzzles, but I liked this, which is unusual.

Nice implementation of a word scramble puzzle. I had fun with it. The clues are nice and cryptic while still giving actionable hints.

I love the animations, although ultimately I gave up because I am not into these kind of puzzles. As some others have mentioned the background looping sound could use a bit of work as it was distracting me from solving the first puzzle.

Great job!

This is a lot of fun. I like that it is two different puzzles in one.

When I watched and hear the smooth animations of each piece and the word complete, I felt impressed! When I got to word #3 I felt stumped.

Simple concept, smooth execution (if you nit pick, the sound looping poorly and the riddle text being selectable are two little issues). Stuck on 8 though! :)

That said, not super in tune with the theme and I would have liked to be able to push multiple panels at once.

Idea is fun and well executed. Echoing what others have said about the lack of an interesting background effect. Would have also liked keyboard control since playing on a notebook is tedious.

@Rico The Jammer The text is selectable on purpose in case (like me) you're lazy and want to copy/paste part of it into google if you don't know the answer. Thanks for the feedback!

Well done. Riddles are good, but not a fan of sliding puzzles.(Personal taste, I'll acknowledge.) Like others have said, tenuous on the theme connection and that goddamn clicking. Otherwise, it's all pretty tight.

Slick presentation! Although it showed a little fps drop.
Very well suited to the theme. Like the clock in background, its more than enough for sound.

Got stuck on Level 3 ... Not English...

I'm terrible at sliding puzzles AND riddles but I think the execution here is pretty great. Simple yet effective. The clicking does get a big annoying although I can see how it adds a bit of tension. Great work!

I love slidey puzzles. Though I had to google search poker terms. I had trouble seeing the solutions at first. Simple fun, kinda wish there was more of a conclusion.

@justinooncx That one is probably the most obscure, almost to an unfair degree, so don't feel too bad if you didn't know it.

I loved the detail in the animations and the very fitting sounds, the environment around the game is great. Unfortunately I'm not that good with riddles so I couldn't complete it, gave up on the second level and gasped when I saw the answer in the source code.

Really nicely done. Much more enjoyable than a normal sliding puzzle game and having duplicate letters makes it less frustrating. Great idea.

Very polished! You could easily release this as a mobile app and sell it. The puzzles were just tricky enough, though I couldn't beat 8. Sorry you couldn't make it to the stream, but you can watch the VOD.

You watched us play this one, so you know most of what was thought. A solid little puzzle game with some legitimately difficult (but solvable) riddles.
