Overstock! by Random-storykeeper

[raw]
made by Random-storykeeper for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

You are a regular employee working during a not-so-regular day at PAPER™, an office supplies store that has begun to employ the use of its new cleaning technology. However, this unorthodox sanitation method has to be tamed.

Gameplay!

Find and put down supplies that can be found around the store to feed your cleaning companion. Your friend will consume supplies you place and remove dirt that customers track in, but be careful, as the customers will be scared off if it comes in contact with them. The store will close if too much dirt builds up, three customers get frightened, or your helper runs out of cleaning supplies.

Controls

  • WASD or Arrow Keys - Movement
  • Z - Collect cleaning item
  • X - Place cleaning item

Love the art! I also like the mechanic of needing to get near the customers to clean the dirt, but not so close you'll scare them away.

Interesting mechanic, the monster being a bit unpredictable was a bit of a challenge but makes you have to think differently about things. Art was good, especially the monster design. Music really fit the setting for putting the shoppers at ease with the monster walking around.

This game has cool gameplay and it's challenging! At first I didn't know what to do with the monster but it makes sense now. The characters and the monster look fun ya know theres just something fun about the environment, the art, the cutscenes and the mood! Also I love the music and the sound effects are really funny too!

I don't know if it's a bug with the web version, but I can't click on the button, when trying to click on play it opens the credits :/

The windows version works well (even if it is a tiny window on a high-resolution screen) :)

@dodormeur What browser (and version) are you using and what operating system? Someone else in my team reported the same issue with the web build, but it was working fine for the rest of my team.

I found the game design to be really fascinating. First off the game is a 3rd person stealth game, where you're focused on hiding something from everyone else. That alone was a really different twist I haven't seen before. But you didn't stop there. There was a whole resource management portion of the game too, where you had to collect and spend resources, but since the monster follows you, you had to think a little on the best route and timing to gather resources without triggering the customers.

So basically while playing this game, I was surprised at the amount of decisions I had to make for what seemed to be a simple concept. Although the general concept/mechanic is really interesting, I did think the execution could use some work. Sometimes the gameplay really shined where the customers got close to the monster and created tension, but other times the mechanics didn't mesh well together. I'm not sure what a fix might be other than level design? Not sure. Either way it's nothing bad. I think you have a really ambitious game design here. I'm glad you went with the idea and I can see a brilliant design somewhere in all the complexity.

@random-storykeeper I use brave (with shields/adblock deactivated, so most of the time it behaves like chrome)

The actual mechanics of the game didn't shine through, but the art, the music and general style of the game was super fun.

Every comment says "interesting" and I think there is really something unique and interesting about this game. I really like the art style and I think the music and especially sound effects are fantastic. I would have liked to maybe see a goal survive the day and you win or something.

The complexity of this title certainly is on display, and I think your team did an amazing job tying things together. The controls were fluid and your level layouts lent itself well to the overall theme and goals of the game - it gave a surprisingly high level of player agency and control.

Well done!

This was a little bit confusing at first - I couldn't see the cleaning products because they they were basically camouflaged among the shelves and for some reason I thought I had to lure the monster to the dirty areas with the cleaning products.. Once I understood that, it became a fun challenge! The music and sound effects really suited the game, as did the graphics and splash screens, which I found to be quite charming.

I love the music and the sound effects !!! And the little introductory cinematic is a good idea too.

About the gameplay, I think it makes the game a bit random that nothing can be done to prevent the customers to bump into the cleaning monster.
