Trashquest by icxon

[raw]
made by icxon for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

Spirits of the Junkyard want to have some fun! They are going to decide who's going to be the king of the trash hill, and of course, the most sensible way to do that would be a TRIAL BY COMBAT!

I usually write something moody and lore-heavy here, but today it's our 10th Ludum Dare as a team, so I want to steal this place and celebrate a bit. First and foremost, I want to say huge thanks to my friends Ruslan and Alexey here, thank you for dealing with all the shmuck I produce on a constant basis. You are awesome and I wouldn't grow nearly as far as I am now without you.

This game is simultaneously a nod to a great piece called Hammerfight (which is awesome and you should play it) and to our first ever jam entry called Ancient Contact, which was also a physics sandbox playground. You can go and check it sometime later to see how much did we manage to improve (or degrade?) over those years. It was a realy nice journey. Bumpy ride, of course, ups and downs, happiness and depression, and this fulfillment after the game is finally submitted and you can relax and enjoy it. It's what we are here for.

Last, but not least, we'd want to thank all of you people, who spent your precious time playing our games, rating us, leaving feedback, and even buing our steam game. You, Ludum Darers, are absolutely fantastic bunch of people, wonderful in every way (except, maybe, picking a jam theme).

Thank you! And have a good time in rate weeks.

CONTROLS:

  • Use mouse to fly around.
  • Hold [LMB] to activate your attach sockets - if there's an item nearby, it would be attached to you.
  • [RMB] to discard all your items.
  • [SPACE] to evacuate, but beware - your body will be destroyed.
  • [ESC] returns to menu. Sorry we didn't had time to make a confirmation prompt.

I must say that I just love the idea!
It reminded me of Robot Wars where you fight a bunch of different robots with different weapons.
Really well made, and I also loved the audio, both sfx and music:)
Well done!

Fun theme, coherent aesthetic, and intriguing concept. I loved the music, and then it picked up when I approached my first opponent and somehow got even better. Well Done.

I loved the art and enjoyed trying to figure out the best way to swing weapons around. There was an instance where I tunneled through the ground and got stuck underneath, but other than that, great job!

Great concept! It took me awhile to find out how exactly the attachments worked, but once I got the hang of it it was fun trying out different combinations. The slomo effect was really cool and satisfying!
Good job!

Such an awesome little game. I loved the controls and gameplay. I made the mistake several times to eject when I didn't mean to and lost my main ship, it's too bad that it disappears. Lovely little music and great graphics. Overall a very cool entry, great job!!

had a lot of fun especially once i got a few connector joints with a cleaver attack and started flailing around like a lanky serial killer

This was super fun. Took a while to figure out I needed a 'body' piece to pick up weapons, so maybe an entry level one at the beginning would help get into the action quicker.

Great sound , graphics an humour- would be cool as a mobile game too. Keep it up!

Oh my, this reminds me of a game i used to play a lot a while back, i love it.

The way you limited how much you could scroll the wheel was pretty clever and wow, everything is just so satisfying! Super challenging.

Some form for progression/story would be cool, hope you develop this further!

hey i actually love the kinda sandboxy physics combat mechanic here, it's really fun to mess around and play with and found myself more invested and having more fun than i expected, haha-- at times it could be frustrating getting the player to orient the right way and sometimes i wished i had finer control over detaching and attaching parts— but that certainly doesnt take away from the fact that this is an awesome and fun game! great job

This game definitely has style! Great art and cool music. I love this post-apo-trash-world :) It was a little hard to figure out what to do, but then it gets fun.

It looks nice/graphics style is excellent. Sadly I couldnt figure out how to grab the hook, holding the buttons did nothing. Dunno how the controls are supposed to work. But at least you got bonus points for amazing graphics.

That is one strange yet very addictive game. Love the graphics and music :) The controls were a bit weird but once you figure them out the game is fantastic!

This right here has to be my favorite game so far. It's so much fun, I love the aesthetic, and the combat mechanic is unique (even if it is a nod to hammerfight). I adored the graphics. I would love to see this expanded upon, and I'd bet that this would be really fun to play in a multiplayer environment, especially given how monstrous you can become!

I liked the idea a lot, swinging found trash at opponents was really fun! I think the slow motion would deserve more indication and the impacts would deserve more particles and heavy sounds, so the player would have strong feedback on landing or receiving a hit.

I had a lot of fun playing this

I love the idea and the implementation of the LD theme is your game.
I did come up with some very funny combinations of attachments.
The use of middle mouse button to spin the character and its attachments was amazing!!!!
The graphics are very nicely done and the nice sounds/music complete an excellent LD entry!
Excellent entry indeed!!
