Burning Out by Emil Sitell

[raw]
made by Emil Sitell for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Title.PNG

Stranded in the woods, the middle of winter, nighttime falls... The last thing you want is letting your fire die.

Gather firewood to prevent your fire from Burning Out. Collect food, keep warm and try to stay alive as the night gets colder. How long can you survive? The game is slower paced but ramps up to being quite stressful as time goes.

Our 2nd Jam

LD46 is the second game jam we participate in, LD45 being the first. We loved the experience last time so we knew we had to do it again sometime, and here we are! We really feel like we've grown in our gamemaking skills since last time, this project was more ambitious and turned out a lot better than our last jam entry(Nothin' to Muffin). The visuals have improved a lot, our last game didn't have a proper menu system which we have this time. Sound design is a lot better and we feel like gameplay is much more polished. And we did all this in a shorter amount of time. We are really proud of what we have done and we hope you will enjoy it.

Programs we used

The game was made in Unity and programmed in Visual Studio.

We drew sprites and made animations in Aseprite.

The music was made using soundtrap studio.

We got the sound effects we didn't make ourselves from zapsplat.com.

Krita was used to make some textures, i.e. the snow texture.

Very enjoyable game! I loved the sound effects(Although they weren't yours you did a great job picking) Although some texts were mis labeled and I couldn't eat berries I loved the look of the game and exploring and keeping my fire alive! Well done!

Very atmospheric. This was probably the only slow-paced game I've played so far that didn't frustrate me. Dying after by torch went out was actually really scary. There are some technical issues, like layering weirdness, that hamper the experience, and the player character appears to be stylistically out of place, to me at least. But this game has some real high points, it's the only game thus far that I've rated highly for mood.

Cool game, I liked little touches like the footprints in the snow and the animation of the tree being cut. I wanted a bit more to do mechanically to maybe stabilise the situation, but then I'm an optimist.

Really like the atmosphere of your game! The light effects when putting stuff into your fire made it super fun to me ;) When you try to interact with stuff from the top the animation/sprites are a bit buggy - but it was still a great experience :)

You did a good job of giving the feeling of being alone in the woods. Great visuals and sounds.

Great game, on point with the theme. The daylight cycle works really well to put the player into a position where they need to adventure to keep this fire alive. The torch adds a great touch and sound effects add to the immersion. Great job!!!

Nice audio. It was a little buggy, I think most bugs had to do with retry.
I could go on a collecting spree and keep the sticks after I retried. And I think I picked something up on an earlier run and then couldn't pickup logs.

But very atmospheric!
I think your next LD will be much better if you learn how to fix these bugs :)

Nice slow paced atmosphere! The mechanics made me think about Don't Starve, I don't know if it was on purpose. At first, it's quite relaxing, finding wood around the firecamp, but once you start exploring in the dark, it becomes more and more stressful :)

Pretty good game! I do like the pixel art, as I've recently started dabbling in pixel art myself. I did notice some of the sprites feel a bit out of place, like when you drop berries, they're HUGE. I mean, I'm sure you did this so they were easier to spot, but I think maybe 1/2 or even 1/4 that size would still work with the aesthetic and not look like watermelon sized berries :D Still, pretty fun game and I like the mood, the music helps with the kinda bleak atmosphere.

Very cool idea! I loved how spooky, and eventually frantic, I felt as I tried to keep the fire alive! I did get to a spot where I'd cut down some trees but couldn't figure out how to cut them into sticks/logs to put in my fire, but I still had a good time. So atmospheric!
