Cactus Care by west

[raw]
made by west for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Room3.png room2.png You are a student trying to take care of the one thing of life in your apartment, a small cactus!

Make sure it doesn't die!

It gets frantic quite fast

Dev Note:

Try to beat our high score: 15956!

You have to turn on the tap at the sink to get water. ;)

We finished!!! the fifth time competing and only the second time we finished!

Sadly no mac build because unity doesn't like making mac builds on a windows laptop.

That was surprisingly fun! Love the adorable little cactus too. The screen shake scared me at first because I thought I broke the game. Nice job!

Absolutely ridiculous. I love it. Genuinely tense from that camera shake...

Very fun but too hard. A progressive difficulty should be better.
The game become laggy on my computer after few games, maybe a memory leak issue ?

I like this cactus. Good job !

@duck-reaction Thank you for your feedback,
I had wanted to slowly build up the difficulty by adding stages of growth to the cactus but due to some last minute bugs I only managed to put in small breaks(if you water the cactus the need for water wont go up for a couple of seconds).

I'm currently not sure what the memory leak could be but i'll have a look into it ^_^

Scariest experience I've had. That was a pleasure.

It looks good but the screenshake (entended or not) is really bad and it makes me quite dizzy xD fun game though

I keep a cactus in real life, and can say, this is 100% accurate.

That cactus gets quite angry when its thirsty
Tried it a few times before realising I needed the sink to be on first, then when I tried to water it physics shenanigans happened. Good laughs were had :)

Love the premise, love the game over screen. That cactus was the epitome of the  face. Maybe a little difficult for me as I'm not a huge mouse and keyboard gamer, so controls still take me a while to react to. Still had fun, so great work!!

Very neat game, though the mouse sensitvity was a little to fast for me; I also think that the game was trying to tell me that i'm not very good at keeping a cactus healthy.

Great game! hit a bug a couple times where the watering can would get stuck at the taps. I love how when u fail the cactus rages xD... I will now go buy a cactus and paint a smiley face on it :)

Ok, I really went into Live,Die,Repeat mode after the first few tries!
Too bad for the sensitivity and the missing audio

I agree with the others, a lot more fun than I was anticipating. Was not expecting the cactus to be aggressive.

The first time I played, the watering can got stuck behind the collider to turn on the sink; so I was frantically trying to work around the collider to get the watering can back while the cactus was (literally) bouncing off the walls behind me. Hardest I've laughed in days.

Graphics could use a bit of work, and the sensitivity was *way* too high; though to be honest, both of those put together definitely made the game a lot more hilarious and fun to play. Good work, you two!

Got a cactus because I heard that they are easy to care for. Cactus exploded after not getting water for 2 seconds when my watering can glitched through the wall into my bedroom. 0/5, needles still stuck everywhere, can't recommend.

(This was surprisingly funny. The earthquake and the cactus staring it me were completely unexpected, haha. I recommend going for a lower difficulty next time though - it was a bit frustrating, especially in the beginning.)

Nice job! Game is fun and entertaining. But got to get used to the sensetivity and the skreen shake. But overall, i liked it!

Wow, earthquake! Looks like this cactus controls the deep depths of a earth. Pretty hard to play, but concept is nice! Good job :)

I love the idea of taking care of a cactus, but it's harder than what I expected. Plus the camera shaking makes it really hard to move around and save the cactus :(. maybe some balancing would help the game experience and I would only make that the body doesn't cast shadows so we don't see it's a cylinder body

Some sound cues would really help to make it clear that the screen shake is intended. As it is the screen shake just makes it seem like the game is breaking. The art is nice though, and it has a lot of potential.

Most intense game I played so far :stuck_out_tongue:. The gameplay was pretty nice. That cactus had me running like hell to provide it with water.
A backing track or some audio FX would be nice to have.

I've definitely been in that situation, taking care of a cactus in a small apartment. I didn't manage to get very far, the physics were pretty unreliable and the mouse aiming was very sensitive which made it difficult to control. Screenshake at the end was funny. I think some sound effects would have really helped the whole experience, even if it was just some ambient noise and free stock sound effects or sounds made in SFXR.

Hilarious and suprisingly fun for how simple it is! I laughed a bunch in the moments where i was holding the watering can half-tilted above the cactus waiting for it to want something.

It was a little confusing at first when i was trying to water the cactus but it continued to want water. Since the physics are so wonky i couldn't tell if it just wanted water again or it never received what i gave it. If there was a sound, or some kind of visual feedback - even a "nice job u watered it" - that would be plenty avoid confusion.

:D pretty inspiring to me particularly as I've been talking with friends a lot lately about making gardening games

Wah! That gets intense fast! The way the whole world starts to shake when the cactus needs something is pretty hilarious  Fun!

Im not sure if sound would make this game more scary or less scary lol. Simple mechanics but very fun and hectic. It was straightforward and easy to understand, nice entry.

Interesting idea, this is the most demanding cactus ever!
Camera shake was too much when the cactus is dying and I think the cactus does not should have collider, one time the water can throw the plant away.

Nice concept!. I missed the sound. It is a challenging game to play. I had problems with the jar that got stuck inside the sink more than a few times. I liked the low poly graphics. Nice entry!

Ok that was really funny xD First i smashed by accident the cacus, that i throwed the can away, than u bugged the can in the sink xDDDD I was laughing so hard. I love games with real physic. Also it feels really intuitive and logical the way i had to fill and pur with the can. Great job. I will now play a bit more xD want to see how far i will get.

moving around the objects felt kind of clunky, combined with the intense screen shake and lack of sound, it felt fairly frustrating to play
