Lethal Loop by Chaosinism

Introduction

Lethal Loop is an action game happening in the cyberspace. You will control a guardian robot eliminating viruses invading the server. However, the robot's combat system has been infected by viruses. As a result, all the available actions are locked in a dead loop.

In other words, during the combat, you cannot execute whatever commands you like. Instead, all the available commands must be executed in a fixed sequence, over and over again. Use Mouse to aim. Use Left Click and Right Click to execute the first and the second available commands.

Really cool game reminded me a little of mega man battle network. I did find it a little hard at first to notice the indicator arrows that tell what side the enemy is coming from but once I knew where to look for them it because no problem. Your art is all very nice looking (especially like the contrast of the colorful main character and the largely black and white enemy.) Your gameplay is also really fun. I like that after battle I was given the option to get rid of and replace stuff. The music is also really nice.

This was a very interesting game. I found it very innovative, however for me the music was quite loud and I wish there was a way to turn off the music. Overall tho, good job!

Whew, I saved the server and data! That was a very hectic, but fun experience. I really like the idea of restricting the order of actions, while still being free to time everything however you want.

I can see the potential in coming up with strategies for different levels if you plan on developing the game further. I managed to beat the current level by prioritizing health and shooting, and cheesing it by spamming dash to get back my attacks quickly, so having more layouts to make each card useful would really bring the whole idea together nicely.

The music and the player character both feel very wholesome, and then you're fighting all these mean viruses, and I don't know where I'm going with this, but I liked it.

First time I played I gave up on my run because I didn't know what I was doing and made the game really hard for myself by building a bad deck. Maybe some way to change it without restarting the entire game would be a good idea.

One thing I didn't notice at the start was that the platforms didn't block enemy bullets, so me taking cover wasn't helping my chances of surviving. I'd also like to be able to slash viruses below me while standing on the platforms. I think that would make the slash card feel more useful.

I was skeptical when I saw a "deckbuilder" but this is really fun.

The slash card is not as strong as the shoot. I tried to dash slash but that didn't turn out well. For 1, I couldn't slash upwards and that really means I can't use it to hit the flying enemies.

and 2, the card order changed when I executed the dash sometimes screw me over. I would have dash in the first slot and slash in the second, and my brain naturally left click + right click, which as it turns out, didn't work.
I wonder if the card replacing the used slot might be better than flowing down.

However, those are small problem. This is a fun game. =) good job on the execution.

Thanks for the game ! :D

@fryer and @zwodahs , thanks for your detailed reviews!
I think I failed to clearly explain the usage of *SLASH* in the game. It is better than *SHOOT* in defense because it cancels enemies' attacks. For this reason I have to restrict its range, otherwise the player easily becomes invulnerable. However, the mechanism turns out to be counter-intuitive. I should have further improved it if there were more time left.

Really was really, really clever. The design was so unexpectedly good and made for some really innovative gameplay. Instantly understandable but really unique to me - something which is rare to see! Really fantastic job on this game, it's really great!

Really nice innovative take on the loop idea. I definitely had fun taking down the viruses. There was only one small issue with the game and that was the balancing between abilities but since you have only 48 hours it's amazing you achieved this much

The pixel art and the music were really well made. They made the overall experience so much satisfying. For me, that alone made playing this game so much fun.

As for the gameplay, the idea was pretty good of restricting the ability choices whilst allowing them to be chosen at the start of the level. Also being able to execute them in any direction was a good addition. Though I was unable to get past level 2, but still I had a lot of fun. I will definitely try to finish the game once I get time. A great entry, I liked it a lot!

AWESOME card game, nice job!

When I first see this game, I gonna give you straight 5 with no hestitation as my submission is a deck building game too. I am a big fan of card games.

The polishing is really good, the 8bit graphic style is also cool, and the gameplay fits the theme well. Gread submission!

This is a really cool idea, but I had a much easier time just button mashing my way through than trying to play properly. There should be some kind of mechanic or redesign to make it so mashing doesn't turn you into an unstoppable flying death machine. The core mechanic seems like a really great foundation for a build-your-own-fighting-style sort of game.

A really creative usage of the loop theme! It added a lot of strategy and was fun to try and wrap my mind around. The art was great and I appreciate all the systems in this compo working together. You can feel all the heart and energy that went into this entry.

@piscythe Oh, you found that trick! Yes, in the initial plan there was a stamina gauge, but due to the time limit there were several things I failed to achieve, including this one. Thanks for your review!

Awesome game! It's hard to believe that it is compo entry

Now this is one of the best games I've seen in a compo.

This game definitely needs to be developed further.
"Stamina feature" + maybe some kind of multiplayer mode would be even more awesome.

Great!

first when I played the game I though it was a jam, this is a very good entry, I especially liked the music, may I ask what program did you make the music in :)

@life-lich Thanks for your review! I am glad that you like the music. I usually make music in [Cakewalk](http://www.cakewalk.com/). And in this game I use two instrument plugins, [Synth1](https://www.kvraudio.com/product/synth1-by-daichi-laboratory-ichiro-toda) which is good at generating retro timbres, and [XenFont](https://vst4free.com/plugin/1473/) with its default SoundFont file.

The idea is really unique and goes great with the theme. It's like a puzzle and an action game at the same time which is cool. The audio is a little rough on the ears though. Would also be nice if there was more than one map. Another suggestion I would add is to add a tiny cooldown when drawing cards because I found that spamming worked since I would almost get infinite shield. (EDIT: Reading the comments and it seems like someone has already mentioned this). Overall though, it's a solid game. Well done!

The graphics and soundtrack are very good! They're very juicy~ and the music is very cute and vaporwavy. The concept is also very creative! I must say that I just kept clicking like crazy without thinking much and managed to win the battles, lol. But overall I think it's great, congrats! ^^
