Welcome to Hyper Loop Runner!

Story

2.png

The time rift’s containment device has been breached! To fix it, you need to travel through time and stop the breach.

To travel through time, you need to hit the rift’s blue side.

WATCH OUT, though! During time travel, the rift will follow you in a loop, don’t let the red side hit you, or you’ll disappear from existence.

Run laps until you can hit the blue side and perform a time jump!

How to Play

  • Arrow keys: Control your ship
  • Space: Boost

Goal: Run laps around the track until you hit the time rift’s blue side. Don’t let the red side hit you!

Dev notes

Hi there, I hope that you enjoyed my game :).

The main concept was based around sonic mania special stages, where you have to run in circles around a track until you hit an UFO. I ended up changing the game play a bit though.

The graphics were based on old SNES Mode 7 games, even the game's internal resolution is 256x224, to mimic the SNES :).

The game was written in Scala using Minart (https://github.com/jd557/minart), which is a graphics library that I'm developing. In theory, it should be possible to compile the game to javascript and to a native binary (without sound support), but I hit some performance problems, so I couldn't do that.

The music was composed using TuxGuitar and the sprites were drawn in Gimp.

Interesting game, and also a fun notion to put the explanation on the floor. But it was a bit hard to read for me and i felt like i used up a loot of fuel just to try t read everything

Fun game. I didnt get past the third level, i found it to be a bit disorienting driving around. There is no indicator where the ufo thing is so i was just driving around blindly, and when i did meet it it was hard to react to whether it was blue or red before i hit it. An arrow pointing in the direction of the ufo would be nice. Also the display window was quite small on my monitor. Well done making it though! Cool library that you are working on.

I like music and art in this game, nicely done! Man those turns are sharp! Adding some inertia to ship movement would make it more fun to play, I guess!

Fun and complete game, and you took the time to add a tuto in game. I simple whish there were some inertia on the ship so you would be rewarded for having good trajectories.

Thanks for your comments.

@aterlamia derp... I wrote the tutorial before adding the fuel mechanic and forgot to test that, I should probably have disabled that in the tutorial :face_palm:

@p0l4r I wanted to add a minimap, but I was afraid that it would take me a long time to implement/draw the minimaps... An arrow would have been a nice addition.

@BOOtak @Yorsh you are right. The ship does have a very tiny bit of inertia, but it was a late addition (the maps were already made and tested in the version without inertia) and I had some trouble balancing that out, so I just kept it as is. :(

Got that retro PC game aesthetic that makes me think I should be playing it on a CRT monitor on an old IBM. Which is good, because I'm all about that. Really fun little game, but I got a bit lost and I think you've managed the scale and scope well for a 48 hour project, without letting 'feature creep' affect your ability to finish.

Heya! Thanks for submitting your game to my stream [twitch.tv/drjavasaurus)[www.twitch.tv/drjavasaurus]. I had a great time playing it. This brought me back to the old crackling computer running windows95 all those years ago. Beautiful, nostalgia city. I fully appreciate what you've built here, it's challenging and at no point did it feel unfair. Great job and brownie points for making people install Java ;) (Jokes, the game is great it's worth it !)

Nice work. I appreciate the old school feel of this game. I only got to the third level though... it was hard :)

Nice Game, reminds me of old Kart games. In the first level, I was still a bit unsure what exactly my goal was (Timer/enemies/...) but then the UFO got me. Good job!

The game is pretty fun and i think the concept is pretty cool. The instructions being text on the floor is pretty bad though, and i think it would feel a lot nicer if the boost had some particle effects or you actually had immense speed when doing it since it is limited

An interesting game, not the most fun one I've played, but still an interesting game. So far I haven't seen any Java games in LD47 (apart from yours), so that's cool to see. The game has interesting mechanics although having the instructions on the floor and larger than what you can see in the window at any given time wasn't the best idea. I would advise adding the instructions/story as a text file and then packaging that with the .jar in a downloadable zip folder. Apart from that, good job.

I like the concept, the controls were hella hard to adjust to, though.
I really really liked the music, very fitting to the theme of the game.

The zoom-in at the start so that you get an idea of the course before starting is well done. Reasonable difficulty curve (with a bit of a spike on the final level). Overall good job :)

Amazing music! I don´t know why but full screen was not working for me... I totally love the retro style and feeling that you reached here. So good!

This has great graphics kind of like Fzero super fx chip scaling! I loved teh controls. Its such a cool concept you have to hit the blue side of the rift. And it became kind of a racing game with a purpose and a goal which I loved. Thanks for making it!

**MacOS Version Works Great**
Almost every mac game in the jam required me to do this: `Double-click -> Esc` then `Right-click -> Open -> Open` to get around the security of the mac gatekeeper.
After that it worked perfectly!
