Start with nothing by fiaful

[raw]
made by fiaful for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

Here we are...

In the end, although late, I decided to participate in the 45th edition of the ...

The project was completed in about 10 hours ...

The graphics were partly made by me, partly taken from the OpenGameArt.org site ... but they are all freely usable for commercial and non-commercial projects.

The sounds have been made and sampled by me and are freely usable.

I would have liked to add other elements (mobile elements like cars, cannons with which to destroy part of the level, enemies) but, although the jam is not yet over, the time at my disposal to work with it is over ... so, this is it!

Probably in the future I will come back to work on it to add elements, it will depend on the feedback received ...

For now I can only wish you good fun!

Instructions:

[In Play mode] Use and arrow key to move the player... Use arrow key to jump... To finish the game, you must find and reach the GOAL... Press and arrow key to use ladders... Press key to enter/exit the edit mode... Getting to the GOAL quickly is fun... But trying to use all the pieces available is even more fun!

[In Edit mode] In edit mode press to view/hide the grid... In edit mode press + arrow key to move your red cursor... In edit mode press key to build a brick in red cursor position... In edit mode press key to erase a brick in red cursor position... To build/erase, you have to move the player so that the red cursor reaches the desired place... Each brick has a maximum number of items available... The brick amount change when you build or destroy bricks... Press from <1> to <9> key to change background, <0> key to reset... Interesting ! The game works, the graphics are okay but i have a problem from a design perspective, and I think a tad more design (game/level) would have be interseting. Maybe you should have had a bit less elements and focused on the constraints on usign them. Overall, it was great nontheless, congrats !

Hey! thanks! I love your comment!

Unfortunately the time I had was very little and I wanted to do everything from 0 (graphics, animations, sounds, code, everything is done / searched for from 0) ...

I tried to put as many things as possible that didn't take me too long to spend ...

the only constraints I entered were the achievement of the goal, and the limited number of bricks, ... and the score that varies according to the number of bricks used (in order to convince you to use as many bricks as possible) ...

Anyway, since people are enjoying the game, I'm going to continue ... (I'm getting feedback from various platforms)

if you want to lose another 2 minutes writing to me ... what would you change / add to improve it?

@fiaful Well I think you may have went kind of overkill on some features. To summarize, there is one key thing you need to keep in mind for your next jams : scope.

For exemple, no offense but by the looks of your game I can tell you're not a graphist. On your next attempts, try to design your game around your skills. For exemple, don't use a style like stickman that needs a lot of animations if you don't feel confortable with it. Also, keep in mind that your time is limited, so one you have your concept, say "placing blocks to build the level", don't go creating a plethora of blocks/ladders/slopes. Build your core gameplay, then toy with it a bit.

I know this is kind of general, but since I was not by your side while you where working on your project, this is from an external perspective so take it with a grain of salt ^^ !

Controls are a little confusing but still fun to play.
