SUNSTYX by Jasper Hansen

[raw]
made by Jasper Hansen for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

here's a minimilist space shooter about keeping a star alive... your movement is restricted to rotation, but besides that it's not really a good representation of the theme. sorry!

here's a round of gameplay, if you need convincing

https://youtu.be/aHsC7ub-nwg

Feel free to criticize as harshly as you wish. Not sure what you could say that I haven't already thought about... but i guess that's what feedback is for

not sure what else to write here. it's weird that the game ended up lending itself so well to simplicity, considering my initial idea would never have worked with the time limit. This was also the first time i tried working with this sort of dynamic-y music. couldn't come up with anything better that would work with the game's aesthetic. also... the screenshot is of me playing the game wrong. you're supposed to shoot the asteroids, not the drone things. whoops

have fun!!!

@jasper-hansen I actually thought you're playing some kind of ancient laser beam that have angels regenerating it before reading description. :D

Kinda hard to understand what's going on at first. By the way, can your laser damage the 'angels' or those lives you're given?

@mikoziq yeap. actually, that's all that damages them. sorry about the learning curve. I know it's probably pretty bad considering most people just want to give the game enough time to rate & critique and then move on. hope it wasn't too hard to get the idea.

@jasper-hansen Nah it was cool. Figure it out after I lost 3 lives by accidentally incinerating them from existence  . It's a feature they say!

My wife and I are both playing games and when we opened this one up, both of us did a very cliche "ooooooh". I loved the music, I loved the graphics, everything moved very smoothly. Really don't have much negative to say other than I wish it wasn't such a tricky game, I'd love to play for longer rounds.

I love the style so much!!! The gameplay was a bit confusing but then after I got it I was hooked, it was very challenging but the audio helped it all work together! Very Very good game!

Took me a little to figure out how to play, and it was quite challenging. I think with some balancing and variations on the enemies it would be great. Really liked the graphics and art style. The music set a good tone. Well done!

Was confused in the beginning but then it really got going as soon as I grasped the concept. Not sure if the protection drones were healing me constantly back to full health or not. I thoroughly enjoyed the game and the way it was presented. The music was a fantastic touch!

good: the graphics are beautiful! the audio is nice, and everything (music, sfx, animations, etc) comes together to create something where every action and event is really satisfying. it felt very well polished.

bad: I don't think I actually had any fun? not sure if it's supposed to feel more fast-paced or strategic, but I didn't feel either. the gameplay felt slow (but difficult!) and a bit monotonous. I like the "options" idea although it didn't feel very linked to the theme.

also, the game came up as a small square in the middle of a fullscreen window. not sure if there's an option I missed, but if it's not using all of the screen, I'd prefer to play it windowed.

A bright spot in a somewhat dim LD.

A bit confusing at first, I wasn't sure how the stabilisation mechanic was supposed to work. The graphics, colour scheme and music all make for a really nice atmosphere. A nice rounded polished game :)

I love the color scheme and the way the audio fades as you weaken. It made me feel really bad for the poor star.

Hey @jasper-hansen !

This is really impressive considering you did this for the compo !

The relationship between the audio and what happens on screen is very well crafted, I am very sensible to audio feedback and starting with this beautiful chorus when you press an arrow key at start got me in straight away, also a very pretty way of introducing the healing mechanic without printing any text !

The game is definitely challenging and took me a few tries to actually keep playing a descent amount of time.

I could be wrong but I was under the impression that the healing beams do not replenish the planet while you are firing ?

If this is the case I think it might be a welcome tweak (the game being hard in itself even without that), since you find yourself firing a lot, having to wait for the healers to do there job can be fatal ! That or perhaps timing the healing on a rythmic pattern, so you can anticipate when the healing is going to take place and stop firing just before !

I had great fun playing this, it is somehow quite relaxing which is not often with this kind of game, and actually pushes me to try again and again just for the pleasure of the visuals and the music.

Great job, keep up the good work !

Feel free to check and give me you opinions on my entry

Cheers

@guaranteedtrainwreck oh no, i probably should've realized that the pseudo-waves weren't made especially clear, the beams only appear after you've destroyed all the asteroids and more start spawning. Maybe something could be introduced as a safeguard against the player making an assumption like this? I'll think about it, thanks for the note!

@jasper-hansen oooh I see what I missed ! Makes more sense now !

Yes maybe making the timespan between waves longer so they do not seem to overlap into just one !

Interesting game, just something different which I really like. The art I really enjoy and in combination with those graphical effect and sounds gives it this nice feeling.

Very pretty entry ! Gameplay works well, and the art is very stylish and efficient (i dig the color code). Nice polish touches too with the dynamic music, the laser beam screenshake, the FX, and the various destruction levels. It conveys a quite dramatic and almost cinematographic feel to an otherwise very simple game. Well done !

I really loved the art style and the overall vibes of the game. It could be a bit more explained but I picked it up after one try. The thing I missed the most was some kind of "punch" or extra feedback triggered when asteroids where destroyed. Sound/music design was amazing by the way. Subtle but really good.

Everything in this game just works together so well, i love it! as always I'm won by pixel art, but this was proper sweet! the simple soundtrack was amazing along with the SFX.

sorry i dont really have any real critique on your game, it's just to well put together.
