Time Forest by Denzil Gomes

[raw]
made by Denzil Gomes for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

tf1.png

You awaken in a large forest and are greeted by a mysterious being. A short action platformer in which you you only have a few seconds to make progress before you are rewound back to your start point. Collect time fruit to increase your maximum time. Usual not enough time excuses, but I had fun getting this done. Looking forward to your feedback thanks

Art was an asset pack from user maaot on itch.

dialogue box art from a humble bundle.

Code was my own.

No time for music...suprise suprise

Arrows to move and jump.

X to swing your sword.

Enter to close dialogue.

P.s ran out of time. The last dialogue is more to myself.

I like the way it rewinds your movements.

cool mechanics and interpretation of the theme. sound effects and music would be a major improvement to the atmosphere. apart from that, great game!

fun little concept, I found the reset mechanic a little jarring the first time i encountered it but I quickly got used to it. Something I could happily get into, only wish there were a few sound effects to go along with :)

Hey good job on that mechanics! Glad my assets worked for you :) the effect you did on the spines is very good when they grow.

@png and anonymous. I agree, disappointed I didn't get any in, thanks for checking it out!

@maaot your art is great! thanks for making that available. Wish I could've done it better justice by adding the backgrounds and decorations. Next time, and thanks for having a look. If you ever release paid art please let me know

The movement and everything is nice and polished, great to see :) I did find rewinding to the beginning a tad frustrating once it became 20 seconds long and such - I think more levels that are shorter little puzzles would have been really good to minimize time spent redoing things, but i mean it was only 20 seconds so a minor complaint.

A little frustrating at first, but it's an interesting mechanic that works well with the theme. I'm impressed by the number of different elements here -- the sword, vines, crystals, etc. Nice work!

I played through to the end, super engaging platformer! I found the floaty movements a bit difficult with the time constraint and the small platforms sometimes, but I made it through. I really wanted more gameplay though, it felt like it ended so soon.

Very cool mechanic. I love how it's part-metroidvania with the environment locking you out of certain areas for the beginning. One complaint I have though is that respawning is so fast that before I could even react, I would still be holding down the direction and fall down the same pit immediately again. It might just be me, but a little pause after dying could help.

A very nice looking game with interesting mechanics. Impressive amount of content too!

@shyrro thank you for trying it out.

@griddolini smaller levels is a good idea I think that would work well. I was meant to have more rock portals. especially above the start point and that was meant to get you closer to an area you were when you found the corresponding portal but ran out of time. thanks for checking it out

@frosty thank you, there was meant to be a shield ability and a boss fight with a vine monster too lol I'm delusional when it comes to scope

@nardandas Happy to hear you played it al, makes it worth the effort.

@essarrgee no it isn't just you, improving that was on my to do list just didnt get round to it. I wanted particles to fly back to here you were kind of like Celeste, but you're right a simple delay would have improved that a lot

@gnx thank you, you had a good amount of content in yours too.

This is a really cool idea and it is really well executed considering the time constraints. The lack of sound really hurts the mood, but other than that I am very impressed. I really liked the metroidvania elements, for example, I went to the left through the vines before I went down, and had to backtrack there again when i had the bounce.

My advice, without suggesting stuff that would take a lot of stuff to do, is that I would've liked if the crystals were more evenly spread out in the progression. Perhaps one behind the first layers of vines to the left. That way- you feel like you are getting closer all the time.

Overall, very fun game!

Really fun metroidvania-y game with lots of interesting mechanics. I would love to see a follow up where the mechanics are polished more.

Bit confusing at the begining , also without fullscreen ,bottom part of the game was not showing up. I though game stopped working. Then hitting enter resumed the game.
After trying multiple times, it was fun to play.

Platforming mechanics are good. Not having any sound really hurts the mood. Not to mention having sound can be helpful in indicating whether or not an enemy has been hit.

@jk5000 @beezthepangean Thanks glad you liked it.

@eldelhas yeah that last line was more to myself lol, I wasn't sure I'd make it. thanks for trying it out!

@invixel thanks for the good feedback, I agree with spacing out the crystals. They really were a last minute addition

@gurigraphics that is true. Next time I will start with sound. I thought I'd leave it until the polish stage...but I didn't really get there . Thanks for checking it out.

@mumaitron I'm glad you liked it. I wasted a lot of time figuring out how to do it lol. thanks for checking it out

@sininenblue thanks for checking it out. Yeah I had wanted combos for the sword swipe and a vine monster boss, hopefully I get time management better next time

@nicardo I always seem to forget to make the canvas stretch with screen size. Thanks for persisting.

@brorenata Yeah one of my biggest takeaways is to begin with sound as opposed to leaving it until later, I wont make that mistake again. Thanks for checking it out

@justcamh appreciate all the feedback on the stream and thanks for the link. congrats on a great game too

Really nice. Exploring the forest was fun, and the rewind feature was really well made. It's a shame you didn't have time to add music because that would've really improved the feel of the game, but I can totally understand that struggle.
