Goal

Get your torch to the top of each level while escaping the water below.

Controls

  • Arrow keys: move character
  • Spacebar: jump/kick
  • Shift: dash

You can only kick/dash once before touching the ground, but if you manage to hit your torch, you can kick/dash again.

Made With

  • C# + MonoGame
  • Visual Studio 2019
  • Aseprite
  • Audacity

I didn't get enough time to do much audio work, unfortunately, but I am happy with the result otherwise!

Running the Game

Extract the .zip and run "_Torchkick.exe".

Very cool take on the theme! It took a bit to get the hang of the controls, but I really appreciate that you started the player in a tutorial room so they could figure everything out. I think a 1v1 multiplayer game with the jumping & kicking as a primary mechanic would be a real winner. Great job on your entry!!

This game is LIT (get it??)

Well coded torch kicking mechanic, feels natural and looks good visually. Always nice to be already having a good time just by moving the player around. I think I'd prefer if I could dash in my last moved direction just by tapping shift while immobile, but oh well.

Have you ever played An Untitled Story? The art style on some stuff reminds me of that.

The game is good. It's really challenging and I could not complete level 2.

This is great! I had a bunch of fun juggling the torch. It did seem a bit hard to predict where the torch was going to go, but I think I kinda got the hang of it.

I really enjoyed this, it's extremely difficult for me but really fun. I think I just like kicking things in games. Great game

Thanks everyone for the feedback so far!

@slimabob A 1v1 multiplayer game is a great idea. I might consider attempting this... Thinking about it more, Lethal League is in the same vein, isn't it.

@jerripo I haven't played An Untitled Story but I do see what you mean! Yeah being able to dash while immobile probably should have been a feature.

Very well made game. It is challenging and have potential. I couldn't finish level 2 as well. I think you can make the platform wider in the bottom so it start easier in level 2

Wow, very impressive entry! Unique idea, well executed gameplay and nice graphics on top. Randomly generated levels are cool, but the randomness got a bit too unforgiving at times in my opinion, almost quit at the freezer 2 but I made it after quite a few tries. Making the wind less strong would also balance it a bit I think. All in all I'm giving high scores for this one. Also I don't wanna spoil anything for players reading this before playing, but if you wait during the ending something very ominous happens...

@jakobthequizguy Hahaha, I'm glad someone found that ;) Yeah it does seem like once again I've not tuned the difficulty very well. The freezer part 2 is where it goes a bit overboard, I would definitely lower the wind strength in hindsight, amongst other things. Thanks for the kind words!

@wekaj I can relate, 3/4 of my LD games have either been too hard or too easy :p

I really liked this one, it sorta felt like downwell, except in reverse. Even if there was no music, the sound effects were still satisfying and i really liked the subtle slowdown when you hit the torch.

Awesome, most fun I've had playing a game in this jam yet. Very tough. Difficulty ramped up very quick but in a good way, gave it a nice arcady feel. Hard to come up with a simple mechanic that is compelling like this is. Very addictive. Fantastic job.

Woooaaahhh!! Did you code this game in monogame?! :open_mouth: That's some nice work you've got there! I know how working with monogame is and I can tell you that this is really an amazing work!

Interesting gameplay, maybe the difficulty could be a little bit lower.

So I could not finish the tutorial - the last jump was to high for me)
But! I managed to complete 1st level! First time I wondered how I did appear in the water because I remember there was tube I was walking on. And then I realized that water is rising continuously! Game is pretty difficult ...until you find out that you can swim. Then you just need to be a good rocket and kick torch quick enough before it get under water too far away.
...However this didn't help me to even pass the 2nd level. I only managed to survive for 3/4 of the way)

Very solid game, AND WELL DONE for having such a unique game mechanic and game loop and interpretation of the theme! I'm impressed! That 3rd level took SOOO many tries for me, but it's rewarding when you start to get the hang of it.

I love the gameplay and animations, the juggling mechanics with the torch are very satisfying and fun to play with. I think this idea has a lot of potential. In line with other comments, I found the difficulty curve to be pretty steep as well, but I have a feeling this is just a matter of learning.

The atmosphere felt pretty slick despite the lack of music or ambient sound, it has a somewhat Dark Souls-ish tone to it.

Great work on this compo, this is really impressive for a solo 48h sprint!

This game had a really fun intuitive main mechanic. The mood was very nice. I do wish there was more variety between levels. the difficulty curve was also a bit off.

Very cool entry, nice concept! Also your game pretty athmospheric, and some hard to play. Good job man !
