Undead Alley by Mungo_

[raw]
made by Mungo_ for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

My first Ludum Dare, I had a lot of fun making this. I had to reel in my scope in the end, but I feel like I got a good amount of the content I was going for in the product.

Kill zombies to collect and upgrade your weapons. A, D, Space to move,

Click / LShift to attack

Click on items to pick them up

I really enjoyed the polish of this! The concept is simple but the sounds, pixel art style, animations and concept all work really well together. The zombies bugged out and just stood around instead of attacking me kind of frequently but aside from that everything controlled well and made sense.

Cute little game! I really love the pixel art and the little crumble animation when you kill the baddies. I'd love to see this fleshed out with a ton of upgrades and more areas to explored. Good job!

Cool beat em up style game. the knock back and particles were juicy but I would of loved to see the spawn rate increase over time to increase the difficulty. Overall pretty cool submission.

This game was very compelling. I found myself sticking around playing for a long while! The ability to upgrade your weapon and see the changes reflected visually was a great touch. I know the struggle of having a great idea and then having to reduce the scope as the jam goes on, but I think you ended up with a great product! Good job :D

Thanks for the reviews guys!

@frozen-spirit I've received a few comments saying that the spawn rate is a bit slow and I tend to agree. As the spawn rate increase over time had already been implemented in the game before submission, I'll tweak the ramp-up rate a bit.

@entirelybees I think that might be a feature that I might have been a bit vague in presenting, the "stun duration" of the weapon. The fish weapon has a high stun, and the grip tape and battery upgrades increase the stun of your weapon. Ideally I would have a stun animation, but as this wasn't implemented prior, I can't really change it.

its really smooth and beautiful, and i loved luring all the zombies to the middle and jumping on them so there is huge stacks of them in the same place ;)

The fishbat was my favourite part of the game! I wish there were more funky weapons, that could display that it was more obvious we were upgrading from nothing. The hit noise on the zombies were a little funky though, I feel like it should be a different sfx. Also the start button in the title screen was a bit small and non eye-drawing so I kept being confused as to why the controls wasn't working when it was just that I missed the start button on the bottom right corner I think the zombies could also be upgraded into bigger mobs, which would allow for more progression and difficulty. Another thing that I like is the bat knockback~!

Thanks for the detailed feedback @falu! I've fixed the menu text so it behaves properly on a window resize, and added some superficial text so that it's more obviously a menu.

I'll continue developing this game, but it will be under a different channel on the game's itch.io page (html-postjam).

Neat game, good art style, Really liked the particle effect after hitting a zombie where they break into bits. Chuckled the first time I picked up a comically oversized wrench, chuckled more at adding other random crap onto it, then chuckled yet more when I picked up a fish and started smacking zombies with it. Nice work!

I live the art stlye and the gameplay is fun. Adding different types of zombies would've made it more interesting. I got stuck on the right hand wall in the air after jumping into it. But otherwise a good entry

Fun game with cool graphics! I liked how dead zombies turn into pixels; we actually did almost the same thing in our game. I would like to play a full version of this with a larger environment, possibly with buildings or cars you can jump on.

I liked the graphics. The mood could be increase by a music. Sometimes the upgrades were not clear (is a fish better than a crowbar?). Good work overall!
