Stuck In A Loop by Zelif

made by Zelif for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

LudumDare47_byssierDJR (1).png

Our game was based on Groundhog Day, where you get stuck living your day over and over again.

Your aim is to finish all the tasks on the cork board in the living room, which will give you a hint in the title towards the general interaction/action that needs to be performed. Ideally we wanted to have a lot more tasks available but crunch time got the best of us.

When all tasks are completed you have won the game.

There is some jank with the wall cut outs and UI but regardless we had fun doing this with the two of us building as much as we could, so please enjoy, have fun and fire away with the feedback! :D

Very much a good representation of how 2020 has felt for a lot of people. If it weren't for video games I would've probably lost my mind. Good game overall and very much a mood

Interesting game, I like the art-style! Using escape exits fullscreen every time! (WEBGL)

Was a little confused about the arts (paint on the wall and PC desktop background), but overall the game seems good and playable. Good job!

@rokevicius Yeah unfortunately we found that out too late!

@bot12313 We were getting a bit loopy by crunch time and started chucking in our friends goofy drawings.

Also @martin-delemotte, @indiequest and previously mentioned, thanks for playing and for the feedback!

The idea is very good, but I was really stuck in a loop, the interaction button was covered in the interface and I couldn't understand what it was supposed to do. I loved the character's camera and movement system, and the level design was also very good! Congratulations!

Not sure what I'm supposed to do here. The webGL player window was so small that I couldn't read some of the text. I think some more details on what to do in the description would help.

I was very confused, I did some of the tasks but none of them worked before I refreshed the page. The graphics were nice, but the game was just kinda weird.

I think it's a great game idea, with nice level design (though I still didn't find the shocking task). I really liked the camera and art system though it was sometimes a bit buggy. Overall, an awesome game

I enjoied the game, but I think you should have some tutorial explaning what to do.
For improvement:
1. When in the bedroom if the player move to left the walls appears and it hides the player. Maybe let the wall invisible?
2. The buttons for Interact/Leave the object, should be on centre, it is quite difficult to read/notice it on the left corner
3. I guess it is a bug: when the time ends and I am interacting with a object, all UI disapers, but I can continue using it.
4. Add some more levels =D

@ulisses @nardandas @cwazywierdo @xsoodx Updated the description a bit so hopefully that helps others and prevents some of the confusion.

@thomas-volpato 1 and 3 we knew were issues but were running out of time which also led to point 4 with cutbacks on content. Thanks for the feed back!

@jagsyfox @barvaz and previously mentioned, thank you all for playing and the feedback!

Really good concept and I liked the touch with the calendar. Felt like there was a story despite it being such a short game and hella relatable after lockdown! Took me a little while to figure out what to do because I couldn't really see the writing on the corkboard and had to walk around a bit to manipulate the camera to get a closer view (well done in managing the camera relatively well though since you said that was a struggle!) Once I knew what I was doing, it was pretty easy although, not sure if it was me, there were times where the interact and pick up buttons popped up, I pressed them, and they didn't do anything that I could see?

Liked the audio feedback which let me know that I'd actually completed a task although the art seemed to be three different styles. I quite liked the hand drawn vibe of the main character and would proabably have preferred it persoanlly if the whole game looked like him. Maybe the rooms wouldn't have looked as "good" but I think it fits the vibe.

Overall, an enjoyable game when I got to grips with what I was doing and managed the camera! Great concept that was relateable and fit the theme. Awesome job, well done!

@dhavavamba Another victim of the time constraint. Wanted to put a blurb on the start screen but we had to cut back a fair bit and simply didn't have the time. The idea is to get through the monotony of the day to day loop by trying out different interactions to get through the day or to simply end it. We had a lot more planned but it just wasn't to be. Thank you for the comment and if you have any questions or feedback, fire away! Love to know what else we can improve on and manage for our next attempt.

@teto We did have a bit of an issue with the interactions which seemed to keep creeping back in. Clearly still made its way to the publish haha. There was an interaction to get a closer view of the cord board but if the interactions were sometimes not working, that may have been your problem unfortunately.

There probably were about three different art styles actually. We got our friends and family to draw whatever they wanted and we put it up as art on the walls. I made all of the interior objects via Maya and @zelif used MagicaVoxel for all the walls and cutaways. I am not very versed in 3D animation so we opted for a 2D character.

Thank you so much for the feedback and glad you liked elements of our game. We were extremely happy with how much we were able to do with just the two of us. So it has meant a lot to get all these responses and learn how we can manage things a bit better next time as well as improve.

@dark-prince-zen Definitely a great job for the two of you! Yeah, might have been an issue on my end then with the corkboard but I managed to see it eventually! :P I like the fact that you let everyone draw things and help you out! That's so cool and definitely adds more of the little things that flesh a game out that you probably wouldn't have had time to do yourselves.

I didn't know what to do at first but after checking the task board I understood what to do. Fun game, I like the mix of 2D and 3D. Good job.

The graphics are really unique( it looks great), unfortunately in the webgl version I can't play the game in fullscreen, because the esc key is responsible for escaping fullscreen and is also used in the game. Overall good job!

Wasn't sure what to do at first (maybe a short tutorial or hints would help) but then it became clearer after wandering around. Really cool idea with the graphics, love the contrast between the player and his environment. I struggled with the camera shifting position a bit, but not a big deal. Would like to check this out again if you decide to take it further. Great job!

@cerins @sophiablabla Looking at potentially starting to do some bug fixes based on the feedback when we get some time, especially since those have been the most common criticisms.

Nice idea! I think a lot of people have their life loop just like that one.
The biggest problems I found is appearing walls. You should make them inviseble all the the time.
The interactive buttons are very small and it's hard to see them.
But I like this game! It has nice 3d and the idea of stuck in every day loop.

The game is good, but the controls are not too intuitive (and hard to see because of small icons) and camera could use some tweaks - especially with appearing walls and how far it is from the main character in certain areas. I know it is an artistic choice to use 2d sprite in 3d environment, but I think that the guy sprite could use some work, so it fits more into the room that surrounds him. The idea is simple but very fitting to theme :)

As mentioned before, the camera is a bit tricky.
The environment you made is really nice though, and it is understandable that you want to display it without invisible camera.
Buttons are a bit small for certains input (esc for example)

Background 3D assets were fantastic, loved the camera positioning and the wall cut-aways quite a bit! I feel the character could have been better, and the gameplay was a little confusing - I was unsure of what to do. Overall a good game though!

The camera seems to be getting mixed reviews, but I'm on the liking it side. I think the camera movements were smooth and it was well place, despite the hiding of the models sometimes not working as expected. As you yourselves said - this could become quite fun and interesting if you plan on adding more tasks to complete.

Very interesting concept! A few months ago I was thinking that I'm living like in Groundhog Day too... everyday's just a routine. And of course, by playing the game I know what *time flies* means xD

@erikiene Thanks for the feedback and for playing! Definitely gives us a lot to think about when refining some of these mechanics.

@wiseclock I like that people are able to understand what we were aiming for. It is also great to see so many different interpretations and outlooks on the concept as well. Thanks for playing!

Neat little puzzler. I liked the wacky art on this one, especially the weird thing that shows up after you login to the computer.

The camera kind of bugs out sometimes, but it's nothing too detrimental. Seems like there's a lot going on in this game, so the fact that it works so seamlessly is commendable!

To be fair, I got stuck. Without any clear goal I didn't know what to do. Camera is a bit weird, and having the "back" button be on the escape key is quite unnatural. I think the game might be more confortable in first person.

A very different and interesting game. I like the way you handled the graphics. Of course, if you design something bigger, your solution wouldn't work, but your game is pretty good anyway. The sound effects are good too. And I liked having to find out what to do to get the tasks done. Good job.

ps: If I can play my game before the game review time runs out, I would be grateful hahaha.
