Two Brot(h)ers - One and the other One by frokes

[raw]

Title.png

Introduction

First time submitting a game that was planned to be a Jam entry from the start and let me tell you, 24 hours more time isn't enough for 3x more mechanics...the holy spaghetti code monster didn't help either. Anyway it's done to a point where I feel ok about posting it but don't expect too much!

Game pitch

Rescue your brother and keep him alive while you two escape the evil scientists testing chambers!

How to play

W, A, S, D - movement

SPACE - Regular attacks

F - Cast spells

You can "open" doors by casting either lightning or fire spells on them.

Features!

  • A brother that is in your way and takes your powerups (keep him alive!)
  • 2 short but kinda challanging levels
  • All ink and paper sprites (some are traced and animated digitally!)
  • Basic lighting system to provide some atmosphere (or claustrophobia)
  • Mad scientist monolog
  • Cute spooders! :spider:

Thank you!

Any and all feedback is welcome!

P.S. I ran out of black ink and with only blood red ink left the art turned kinda sinister, whoops!

Patch log

EDIT: - Fixed minor bug that caused the game to freeze when the brother got hurt. - Fixed an animation loop on the brother that was not playing. - Added a simple screen hinting at how doors are opened.

Cool idea. Got stuch in first room cause I couldn't figure out how to open the door, but that is must likely me being dumb. Liked the artstyle though!

fun concept but shooting is incontrollable :( Also it took me some time to understand i should throw the flames on the door to open it. Charming art and funny game, sound effects are a bit wierd but it adds to the comedic feel of your game. good job :)

The hand drawn art style is great! I think the brother looks a little too much like the enemies. It would have been nice to have some sort of UI to indicate that is what we have to protect. (Also a small note: the game seemed to crash when an enemy touches the little brother.) I think the shooting style was a little irritating, shooting in a different direction than your movement would be more fun I think. Otherwise great entry!

The idea is nice and I really like the drawings !
I had to restart two time the game cause I was stuck in the first room but finally understood how to go through it, more explications on how to use the spells would have been nice. I Kill my brother once cause I thaught it was an ennemy.. But overall it's good ! However the second level was really laggy for me. Good work and good art !

@awerar Thank you for your review! I added a simple hint to the game to prevent others from getting stuck aswell.

@Karas Thank you for playing and reviewing! A hint regardning the spells and doors has been added but the lag in the second room is probably due to the spider objects having a memory leak or a rouge "while" loop taking longer than expected. Considering that my code looks worse than an Italian pasta buffet gone wild, I'll probably not be able to fix that any time soon.

The chittery audio, art style and light really create a great and creepy atmosphere! It was overall quite fun and I was laughing when my brother picked up the bottle of fire spell, light himself on fire and was running around the dungeon ;)! He... didn't survive.

Shooting my paper ball was really hard to aim though and I was sad to discover that I have no inventory (meaning, when I picked up ice bottle buff, I lost my lighting bottle buff I picked up earlier). Also, for me, parts the monologue in chat bubbles at the beginning were a bit hard to read (letters were kinda small).

@fabula-rasa Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the brother's pickup system (especially the firey one ;) ) as sadly that is something that was mostly lost during the level design. Also an inventory was in my mind for the longest of times but then time caught up and ruined everything.

The Game is Great. Love The Art style. But the Frame Rate Man. It runs at 15 fps on a relatively high end cpu...

@WhyNotYT Yeah...there is a loop in the code that is eating a bunch of frame time. I'm working on finding a less demanding solution for that.

I really like your art style and the story is interesting.

You maybe should add some hit feedback when the player or the enemies get hit apart from just removing a health.

In the second room the other brother got stuck constantly trying to run into a wall, after pushing him around for a bit it worked though.

The art style and the games atmosphere is really cool. But it is really difficult to hit anything, so I was not able to get very far.

Congratulations!

You should be proud, don't worry about the things that could have been better :)

I've gotta agree with most comments so far that the art style is really cool. I wish the camera was a little bit closer up so I could soak in that arty goodness.

Like others, I also struggled with the difficulty. I think that's down to the shooting. I was able to move where I wanted to be but had to stop and change direction to make sure shots when in the direction I wanted. This was particularly difficult because those spider movement patterns are so sneaky.

Speaking of spiders... great job on the sounds there! They felt pretty menacing to me... make me explore quite cautiously.

There was a "bug" on the first level where I used my potions in combat and then had nothing with which to open the door. But that didn't keep me from enjoying this jam.

It was hard but satysfying! I love the artstyle, one of my Global Game Jam games had similar style for menus xD I did it with a pen and a piece of paper. It could use a bit of music in the background. Also yay for Game Maker! <3
