Taberu Bakemono: the Eating Monster

Taberu is a monster that, from era to era, leaves the center of the world and, for a day, feeds on the surface, until the sun goes down. Unfortunately, your village was in the monster's path.

Upon noticing the creature's huge mouth approaching, some villagers ran away immediately. You, the king of this tribe, waited for each resident to escape safely to get away from the threat together. Find the others and keep them alive. Look for an escape route until Taberu is satisfied and goes back to your millennial sleep.

Taberu Bakemono is a collect&craft one shot-trial.

Gather resources, build your own escape route and find one of three ways to get out of Taberu's way!

Controls:

WASD: to move

Spacebar: to jump

Mouse click: to craft

How to craft

  • Gather resources in trees and mines, click "+" to add a pixie, and "-" to remove. the more pixies crafting (up to 4 in each spot), the faster.
  • Click in ladder, or block, then click again in range to confirm your craft. Both itens cost 4 resource (wood or stone) to craft.

Hi, the itch.io link requires a password to access. What is the password?

Sorry guys. With the beginning of the week we only managed to turn our attention to LD today, and only today did we realize that itchio had a password. We have already removed and now we will fix some bugs. Thanks!

i really liked the art and the music. things to look towards improving: the audio menu was glitchy, maybe explain the building mechanics a bit. also i don't know how it fits the theme :/

Nice game, I like the idea of making your own path. The highlight for me was being able to explore and make different paths each try.

I felt that the jumping in this game was super unforgiven, I can't trust that I will be able to nail even the smallest jump. I got almost all the way to the end, but failed and thinking what I had to do again all the way to the end made me give up.

Ah, and I loved the little guys that follow you around :D. But sad that some times they suicide themselves in the water T-T.

Thank you so much for playing! We are working on some bugs, mainly for the little pixies, saying that life is beautiful and that it is not necessary to jump in the water.

As it says in the description, the village of these little creatures was attacked by a monster, and the player's objective is to escape from there keeping everyone alive and safe. We are working on a way to explain this ingame, before gameplay.
Please run again in the next updates and thanks again!

Interesting game. Might have potential for a larger project, if it gets a lot more polish :)

An interesting concept, and splendid graphics.
The game really lacks a tutorial of some kind, even some text here or on the game page would be great, since I've spent about 5 minutes trying to do something.
The controls are a bit finicky, I think it would be better if you locked building options to a grid, since in current version there might be problems with proper placing resulting in frustration. Also, it seems very inconvenient, that walking turns building mode off, since you can build only inside a small radius, you want to move to a place where you want to put things, and you might not get it right for the first time.
You might not have a lot of time to address all these things, but I strongly advise to explain controls at least in the text form, so people won't frustrate over this.

Could elaborate how to play the game? I tried all sort of things, but I couldn't build anything. The water instantly killed me. After clicking the ladder or the box, a circle appeared around me, but I couldn't place the items anywhere. I guess I'm doing something wrong, but I have no idea what.

The art looks cool and I love the traditional japanese score. The art would look better, if the pixel resolutions would fit perfectly though. It looks very stretchy like it is now.

I'll wait for a possible answer, before I finish the rating.

The graphics are great. The crafting and platforming combination is certainly something I haven't seen yet. The water being an instant death seems a bit harsh. It also did take me a bit to realize the crafting worked by using the mouse. The game is certainly interesting so great job!

i love this, the platforming controls are good, the idea to gather and build i like a lot! the monster gives the player a sense of looming danger and need to hurry. Good game!

Nice concept and the graphics are really good. Some instructions would be good as it took me a while to figure out how to play. Jumping felt awkward. Noticed a couple of bugs: followers walked through the walls sometimes; and I got stuck a few times inbetween a block I placed too close to a wall and was unable to jump which meant I had to restart, also if I tried walking whilst stuck the trees in foreground would still keep moving.

Very well made game. I did get confused at the start about what I was meant to be doing, but soon figured it out and had a lot of fun with it. As exkilu said, I felt like the platforming was harder than it needed to be, but that just meant I needed to plan where I wanted to build things with my resources.

Had fun with your game, well done :)

This is fantastic, I've spent the most time with this game out of any of the entries. I still haven't beat it, the placement of the ladders and blocks is a bit finicky and the controls could use a bit of tweaking. Still, the graphics are perfect, the sound (the minions chopping or chipping away at the rocks, the music) is amazing. All around phenomenal job!

This game was pretty innovative whose game mechanic I would never have thought of. A couple of minor changes I would make is making the gui art in sync with the rest of the graphics (which are amazing) and make sure the player does not get stuck with blocks that they place.

Really cool mechanic, but yeah an in-game tutorial would do wonders, as well as making the harvesting UI fit in better. Overall, I loved the mood, graphics, and sound. I'd love to play a full release!

とても面白いゲームだったです!画面の完成度に驚きました!けど少し難しすぎるような気もします、何回かプレイしましたけどエンディングに辿りつけることが出来ませんでした(ただボクの操作がゴミな可能性もありますけど)

A really cool idea turned into a very nice game. I feel like the jumping is a bit pushing because you fall too fast. I feel like I got pretty far, but then I jumped down a cliff where I could not see the bottom and landed in some water... Either way this game was pretty fun and the music is super nice. Really well done for a jam game!

Beautiful Graphics with a very unique style. game itself is interesting and could be really great if you improve the controls, they're jaggy and clash badly with the building mechanic (like, you can get stuck between tiny block gaps and when you finally manage to jump you somehow land on another gap. It should be more streamlined to be enjoyable)

It's a great concpet and it really surprised me to see how little attention it got.

excellent idea and implemented really well. I've got to admit the placement of the objects is very difficult (I tried to build a bridge out of stone and just couldn't do it, and building a double layer ladder took several attempts), so might be better to place objects on a grid? Checkpoints would also be welcome :)

what a great combination of mechanics! I really liked the monster slowly approaching :)
