Life of a Homeless by Marcel Grolms

[raw]
made by Marcel Grolms for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Life of a Hobo,

Well we we're two people doing a Jam for the first time. We both never created games before. Everything we have done in this game is from scratch. We did not use any assets. Everything is handmade. We were simply too slow and we couldn't implement everything we wanted to.

Generaly the game is about surviving which means you have to eat and drink and also run away from the police. You controll a hobo, keep him alive !

Things we couldnt implement at all: - you only can run away from the police, if you fail u wont lose (Policeman is a angry bee atm =D test it ) - eating and drinking is implemented but you wont lose - searching in trash objects is helpful for the foodbar, but we didnt placed them just one - fountains for drinking are not implemented - random people spawn is also not implemented, the script was ready but we couldnt merge everything in the last moments - peeing and pooping and more animations are not implemented - no sound since we both are noobs in sound stuff - missions and a story line =_(

It was a great time, we really had fun at creating this game and we will finish this project for sure, with all missing stuff.

Great concept. Would love to see a finished version, with a focus on systems/message!

Interesting. Would've been better with sounds and I found a few bugs, but pretty nice so far.

For a first game, it's really good! Congrats. Graphics are quite good too.

I could tell you put a lot of time into the design of the town, as it all looked really good. The movement and camera was kind of awkward, nothing that cant be fixed though. I could only find one item of food on the map. You should develop this a bit more, its a good start!

A lot of promise, but the controls felt a little awkward. Graphics are good! Good job for a first jam!

The floor could be less slippery. And it would be nice if the character could get from the grass to the sidewalk without having to jump.

Initially I was looking for places to get food and a drink but could not find any. Being your first game and your first jam, 3 days is tough to do everything. Overall your models are great, I am a fan of low poly. A little sound and some gameplay elements with win/loss condition would make a huge difference. Great start though for the two of you!

Well done on creating all the assets! Always nice to see. Getting some performance issues playing on Firefox/Linux might be the number of trees. Thanks.

Looks nice, but I found the controls a bit difficult. I couldn't find any food, but I had a cop chasing me around all over the place. Would be fun if you managed to implement some of the missing bits.

Really great art and awesome idea! With a win and lose state, this game could be pretty fun! Keep up the good work!

The idea was so cool but, gosh, the controls

Your game is really made for arcade style. So, I think that the best solution to achieve your controls was a fixed following camera (like RTS style, or Diablo). With the fixed camera direction, you could level design your world as you want.

And the character is hard to control. I think he's drunk. That's funny but impossible to control.

I hope you will continue to make games and, maybe, update this game (with sounds, there are lots of free sounds on [Kenney website](https://kenney.nl/assets?q=audio)).

First of all - congratulations with your first jam and your first game :) The first game of mine was much much worse :)

I've played once, get back here to read the instructions and then played again. Looks like you find a good fit for the theme. I'd love to see objectives or at least tutorial goals to understand what to do in the game's world. Good luck and please stay safe!

It's a good concept. For a first jam, you done well! For next work, try a smaller game, its awesome to do a lot with few things. And i like the art!

Congrats for your first jam and game! It's a cool concept, despite of the remaining work, the assets are great! Let me tell you that you will build incredible games in the future, I'm sure! And for the next jam keep it up with something smaller!

The first game I ever made wasnt even runable, so this is quite impressive. I would love to see a later version of this, so good job and good luck with future development!

Nice first game guys! Definitely feel your pain on the asset front, it takes forever to make assets. Your game has a fun and inventive idea behind it, and I'd love to see a version with maybe a win/lose condition and a few more obstacles. Congrats on your first Jam!

The pickups needed to be more plentiful.
Also, the ones I found were hard to notice. Maybe make them bigger or have a light glow around them or something?
Overall, looks nice. Keep it up!

I like the art in this game and the camera feels smooth, but the movement controls feel tedious so I would recommend changing that. This is really good for a first game made in a strict time limit.

Cool idea and good graphics. The controls are really buggy because the policeman stops you from moving often, I think he serves no purpose here. I couldn´t find something to drink but it seems like there is no game over anyways. Well, next time you will know to calculate the time better and implement more things. The models you did are really nice :)

This made me feel homeless, truely a work of art. All jokes aside its clear most of the time was spent in art, cause the art and the world comes out good. Now all you need is a game XD

pity the game is pretty unfinished but i like you're graphics style and the concept could be a good one, go on with it!
