Pig-em-Up: Lassos Are Loops, Too! by Jamison

[raw]
made by Jamison for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

Overview

So, you're a pig. And the goal is to get "stuck in the loop" of the cowboys' ropes. In other words, try to get lassoed!

Once you're stuck in their lasso, pull 'em around to defeat them.

...is it the world's first pig-based beat-em-up?

About the Game

I made everything* from scratch during this jam, including the concept, code, sprites, music, and sound effects.

Tools Used - Engine: GameMaker Studio 2 - Music: FL Studio - Sound effects: SFXR, Audacity

*except for two fonts (see below)

Time Constraints

I really ran out of time with this game. I had two failed prototypes and didn't start this game until over 24 hours into the jam. As such, a few things were sacrificed:

  • Content -- it's over after just a few screens
  • A better title screen
  • A real game-over screen
  • Difficulty tweaks -- it's currently way too easy
  • Hitbox refinement -- hitboxes are a little wonky
  • The background -- I mean, have you SEEN it??
  • Enemy variety, additional attacks, etc. I had planned for the enemies to be able to kick if you got too close, but I scrapped that in favor of making a functioning game first.

There are a few miscellaneous issues, too. It's kind of annoying when the cowboy you're dragging dies, because you essentially lose your weapon, and it happens when you don't expect it. In the future, it would be nice to keep dragging him after he's dead in order to continue attacking.

Also, the thing about game jams is the placeholder art tends to stay as the real art. So, please excuse the derpy pig :)

Fine Print

I made everything myself from scratch during the jam, other than the fonts used: - https://www.dafont.com/saddlebag.font?l[]=10&l[]=1 - https://www.dafont.com/kirsty.font?l[]=10&l[]=1

I like the mechanic of being able to fight only if you risk being caught.
The visuals are very nice and I had fun playing, thank you!

This is a hilarious submission, and surprisingly high quality given the multiple false-starts on prototypes that didn't pan out. The graphics are... well, they're not the strongest I've ever seen, but they actually work perfectly in the whole of the game, which is nice! The music and sound effects are a great match for the visuals.

The motion/feel of the lasso swinging around after the pig gets roped is really good - given such a simple gameplay mechanic, it really has to be right on, so, nicely done.

Very creative take on the theme too - not at all the direction my mind went in upon first seeing the theme, but it absolutely matches it.

Doubling down on Pete Valeo's comment, really fun game.

I didnt realize at first I was controlling the pig, so might be a bit more explicit on the beginning of the tutorial, for example having only the pig at first and then having a cowboy pop up for the rest of the tuto.

Hilariously take on the theme though, I had fun for this short demo.

Nice! An awesome and unique mechanic, and a very creative take on the theme. Flicking cowboys and barrels everywhere is very satisfying. Too bad you ran out of time, this has so much potential!

Very nicely done  This was a fun a refreshing game!

I thought the bar at the top was a timer... it wasn't until the end until I realized it was my health. Getting the pig to flicker would be an easy way to show that it is getting damaged. I liked the hand at the top that told me to GOOOOOOOO

This rocks. It's satisfying in a very visceral way. A couple minutes in I stacked three cowboys on a stick of dynamite and thought *this is sweet*. Why can I jump? What does that buy me? Is a cowboy who works with pigs a pigboy? I've lost the plot but good job with your game.

This was a great idea for a game! I enjoyed it a lot - It got the arcade-y feeling I've missed.

Fun simple little game, well done. Any reason you went with pige instead of a cowe?

I really liked this! A unique idea for a game and you've really captured the feel of a retro arcade game. Brilliant Ludum Dare entry :)

Great fun! I found it a little difficult to direct the cowboys exactly where I wanted them to go but that's probably a tricky thing to perfect anyway.

*Lasso game fist bump*

Very very cool! :) I love the personality of this one, and the absolute bonkers gameplay suits it very well.

The physics were a little wonky, but once I got used to 'em I was able to intentionally fling cowboys into cacti and dynamite. I can see this being expanded upon in the future, nice job!!

I love this entry :) the theme really inspired you

Graphics are really good, audio is good, gameplay is very smooth and well executed and I really like the concept. May need more explanation on the piggy life bar, made some times to see it and then I still didn't understood what can lower my health.

One of my favorite games so far! Your mechanics are amazing, and I loved the aesthetic. One comment- your sounds have some technical failures when the game ends that are really painful. Also, if you're not putting a volume knob, dial down the volume to half of whatever you had it set to. Otherwise, absolutely and absurdly fun- please keep going on this!

Thanks for the kind words and feedback so far, all!

@daimadoushi Good thinking about the tutorial!

@nikolai-shkurkin Ahh, thanks for the feedback, I want to make a better HUD that makes it more obvious. The pig actually does flash and jump when you take damage, but I could make it last longer and make it more obvious.

@piscythe Running into an obstacle while being dragged deals damage to yourself (this wasn't obvious at all, sorry!). So, jumping lets you jump over a cactus or box to avoid it, but still have the ~~cowboy~~ pigboy you're dragging hit it. Speaking of the dynamite, I feel like I made it way too easy to stack the cowboys and blow them up with multiple dynamites. I'll have to think about how to fix that. At the very least, a cowboy shouldn't drop his own dynamite directly at his own feet, maybe it should fly back further.

@daniel-whittaker I was making some quick placeholder art, and a pig requires less detail than a cow. Then... I just stuck with the pig and never re-drew it

@coleslaughter Your game was awesome! But yeah, the flinging mechanic especially needs work. You can't fling the cowboy again until he lands, but it takes so long for him to land, and he kinda teleports around so quickly. I might try to add more momentum and buildup of speed, so that the flings feel more deserved, but I'll need to make the arenas a little larger. Or do you like being able to fling him back and forth repeatedly?

@kack3y Yes, I didn't explain that at all, my bad... there are two ways to take damage:
1. dynamite explosions
2. hitting cacti or barrels while the pig is auto-running (from being lassoed)

Hey just want to say I'm in love with the art of this game. Soo simple yet appealing. The pig is so cute I love it. The game mechanics are very fun. There are lot of games I finish and get bored in the end: this one I was sad it's over :(

Even though you haven't been able to add more content, what you already have is very good! I really liked it a lot.
I think what makes the game a little easy is the fact that the bombs also hit the enemies, I always killed them with the bomb itself.
I really loved the sounds and graphics! Very solid and interesting, good job!

Oh that was fun! I love the idea of being caught on purpose so you can throw the cowboys into cacti, or each other, etc. Really cool idea! I love the artwork too! Great work all around.

One of my favorite games in this jam. The effects, sounds and graphics are amazing. The way defeating cowboys may be differ by steps, and there are a lot to do to increase this games fun. The cowboy which throw dynamits could just be defeated by tied man by colliding them. May be it would make the play harder the game in further levels and makes the play exciting.

@vrerabek Thanks for the kind words! I'll let you know when I upload the post-jam version :)

@dizzy Thanks for playing! Yep, a last minute tweak to the trajectory of the dynamite made it fall right at their feet. I've already fixed that for my post-jam version (which I have yet to publish).

@guilhermesouza @floata-1 Yay, I'm glad the inspirations showed through! Definitely inspired by games like TMNT IV for SNES and Streets of Rage for Genesis/MegaDrive

@matterox Good thinking, I had the same idea but that was one of the first ideas to hit the chopping block for time reasons.

@iron-leonem Thanks for the feedback. That's definitely not something I thought about, but I'll keep in mind in the future. Could you please explain the technical errors when the game ends? Does the sound glitch out when a game-over happens? And what version did you play? Thanks for the info!
