Total Shipwreck by Frogman

[raw]
made by Frogman for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

The drunk wooden pirates are about to drown. Try to save their ship before it's too late! CoverImage.png

Gameplay

You control 2 to 4 pirates trying to save their ship from drowning. You can empty the water with buckets, seal the holes in the ship's hull and get rid of extra weight (aka gold). Screenshot3.png You can only play as one pirate at a time, but you can record your actions, afterwards the pirate will execute those actions in a loop. However, the pirates are drunk, and may get lost or stuck (or dance) in the way.

Very nice. All those different mechanics must have taken a while to implement.

Cool game with a pretty huge scope. It's way too hard though. I could not make it past the first level. The timer should be more forgiving on the first level to allow you to learn the mechanics a bit. Also pick up and use should probably be on the same button. Nice art and sound as well!

Was nice but a bit too hard

The idea is really good. The pirates get stuck on random places quite often, which makes it a bit frustrating to play at times. The music is also jarring.

The character models and animations are good..

Overall very impressive for a game made during a game jam.

Really nice gameplay and idea :-) The drunken pirates are a bit hard to handle but it makes very much fun!

@david-hunter - Thanks! Yes, I worked very hard on those, and ended up having only a few hours for balancing, level design and menu.

@p0l4r - Thank you for the detailed feedback! I'm sorry to hear it was too hard. I slightly modified the tutorial and some variables, so the game should be slightly easier now. Try looping one pirate around emptying the water and control the other manually to fix holes.

@axeltherabbit - Thanks! Yes, it did end up being a bit too hard...

@tpsy - Thank you for the feedback! I tried making the pirates slightly less robotic by making them wobbly and inaccurate, but I may have overdone that. I made them slightly more accurate in the new version.

@aligator - Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!

The graphics are, frankly, horrifying. But in a pleasant way. The mechanics are really in-depth considering it was done over the weekend, and I didn't even get particularly mad when occasionally they just decided they didn't much fancy doing anything today. It felt like I was babysitting a bunch of toddlers. Drunk ones, pretending to be pirates.

This is all positive feedback, by the way.

Unbelievable good entry for two days! Love it! Maybe game is bit too hard but damn good! Worth to make full game from it

Made it in normal ! I had to restart a few times though, so I didn't give it a try in hard mode :p I love your idea of justifying inaccuracies in the script with the fact that they are drunk - kinda jealous of not having had a similar idea x)

The models are nicely done and the audio is really good. Made me laugh to hear their lines :D

Great entry !

@amin-jk000 - Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!

@judgezedd - Thank you for the... unique feedback! Had a laugh reading it :)

@thebugger - Thanks! It appears that I'm rather bad at balancing, as pretty much everyone said it was too hard... I'll keep that in mind for the future.

@c1tr00z - Thank you! I have too many ongoing projects as-is, but I'll think about it for the future.

@rolly - Thank you for the detailed feedback! Glad to see someone actually finishing the game! Yes, the drunk part was a classic case of "it's not a bug, it's a feature" :)

Incredible! I liked how much depth the game had, and the mechanics of creating the loops for the crew. Well done!

Hilarious game but more than a bit too hard lol! I love the concept and I think with some expansion and more themes it could be even better.

That was really clever, but holy shit is it the most frustrating game I have ever played. Those drunk assholes kept getting stuck, dropping the buckets for no reason, and running in circles! It was pretty fun, but I couldn't get past the second level (and not for lack of trying).

I think if you were to polish this up a bit more, it would be really fun. The loop mechanics are good idea.

Nice idea!
I found it quite hard, unfortunately. Having the water rise a bit slower would have still kept me on my toes but not have felt like I'm fighting a losing battle.
Nevertheless, I still had fun. :)

I really like the idea behind the game, its a bit hard as everyone mentioned here but i really like it as a concept!

Cool concept. I couldn't beat the first level 'cuz my bucket pirate got stuck pretty frequently but the gameplay loop is fascinating. I think this could work really well in a grid based game.

@eugenik - Thanks! Glad you liked the artstyle!

@sacredbacon - Thank you! Happy to hear you liked the gameplay!

@spaceguy99 - Thank you! Yes, it's more like way too hard :)

@pedrocoden - Thanks!

@ale - Thank you for the feedback! Sorry for the frustration, but least it was memorable I guess? Finishing the first level is no small feat!

@onkel-mo - Thank you! I should've probably done that. When making the levels, I always worried about making it too easy, which apparently wasn't a good idea :)

@layne-stokes - Thanks! Glad you liked it!

@shambles - Thank you! It appears that "good concept, too hard" is the consensus here.

@matthewrobo - Thanks! I didn't think about making it grid-based, but it could've made the game less frustrating. Interesting idea.

Hey Frogman! You were not being dishonest, the difficulty *does* ram up quite a lot. Nevertheless I really dig the style and the idea! If you're curious to watch me fail in the game in different ways, here's me playing it on my stream:
