Loopy Flight by Macmist

[raw]
made by Macmist for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

Welcome to Loopy Flight.

A simple scrolling game where you try to control an airplane that just can't stop spinning.

And for some reason you have to eat clouds and avoid birds. Who knows?

Featuring: - graphics stolen everywhere - awesomely poor animations - sound effects googled with care - the soundtrack of absolute silence - particles effects from outer space - way too much sarcasm - LOOPS - LOOPS - LOOPS - LO... yeah you got this

It is my first time participating in a jam, and the first time I used godot engine as well. I was not expecting to have something playable and knew I did not have a lot of time as it was overlapping with a lot of other life stuff, so I kept it simple. But I really enjoyed the process and I'm happy to have something that's playable, with even some menuing, animations and particle effects. I really enjoyed doing this and learnt a lot in a really short time, I already look forward to the next. My only regret is I did not have time to do some soundtrack for it, but I'll have it next time. Anyway, hope you'll like it!

Whoa! Thats great for a first game jam.
Altough I found the game very hard and a bit nauseating.

That was fun, simple, and challenging. Also very clever application of the theme! Well done!

Very neat interpretation of the theme! It was pretty fun, I feel like it would have been more satisfying had the score been based on distance flown or time flown or something like that.

Mmmm clouds. I wouldn't want to be flying that plane! Very difficult.

Congrats on finishing your first game jam! I like the intro and the sarcastic feeling of everything. It's difficult but fun, great job!

Thanks everyone, for the warm welcome, and glide you liked the game ! :)

@primalshadow thanks for the feedback, score based on distance would make sense that's true. The initial idea was to have the possiblity to shoot the birds for more points, and to add some power ups and special clouds, but I did not have enough time to get to it

Great job! I like the double loop theme and having an unusual mechanic in a common genre. It's a good challenge to control while it's looping but not so hard it's frustrating, just fun.

Liked the humour and the theme interpretation ! Nice work

Well you got the theme correct. For this game I think the clouds should be bigger and move slower. The bird speed is fine. Good job.

It's really simple and easy to understand! I like the art style and I appreciate your work for the first time in Ludum Dare. I also love the dialogue before it starts, they are funny haha. Looking forward to see your next game!!Well done!

Interesting take on the theme. Plain and simple implementation, which is important if you want to finish. Instructions unclear, crashed into cloud and realised I was supposed to pick them up. Also I'm a bit curious about the airplane physics that lets me control the looping plane (but who cares!)

Really simple game idea. But actually pretty hard to play. :-) Could not get more than 10 points. I'm apparently not good at this kind of game. Nevertheless good entry.

This is a fantastic game for both your first jam entry AND your first time using the engine! The looping made the controls feel really whacky (a good thing!) and it was an absolute perfect fit for the theme.
Would've loved some music/sfx and some of the UI graphics could've been crisper, but this was a great entry, especially considering your limited time and experience with the engine.

Nice idea. It should also work well on mobile. Good job

it took me some time to understand that the plane crashed at the height of the skyline.
but otherwise a funny game

Great take on the theme (though I may just be saying that since I had the same)! The height of the skyline might be a tad too aggressive though. :D

This is a fun parody of Flappy Bird! Real funny intro, and I like the game's self aware humor! Put it on a mobile! I think it would make for good laughs with a wide audience.

Found the best strategy was to stay about 25% from the top and stay still, only slightly adjusting when you might be on a collision path.

I like the actual theme implementation and the humor :)

Gameplay could use some more variety though :P
It got quite easy after 2-3 attempts

But I guess it's fair, since it's a jam game and all.

Well done completing this game!

Welcome to the Godot cult - you will like it here with us :grinning:

I really enjoyed humor in the intro. And the stolen graphics are pretty well-stolen  (you should not steal graphics, by the way, you'll make designers cry! :crying_cat_face: See?). It is indeed a shame that you had no time to carefully steal some music - that would add some energy to the gameplay. Without it, I just had to play myself some Powerwolf on my own.

Okay, joking aside, almost - it is a nice and unique take on the theme. On my first try I got a respectable score of 1 before I gracefully blew up. I did successively better on next tries. Turns out, clouds taste like frozen yogurt.

1 HP seems a bit unforgiving to me - would be nice to be allowed one simple mistake of crushing headlong into a bird. We all do it sometimes ;). It got hard for me to look at my constantly looping flyboy after a time - I mean, it felt progressively more tyring on the eyes. But that may be just me (I have astigmatism, maybe connected to that?).

It's a fun little game and definitely a funny one. I saw in your blogpost that you plan on working on it further - so, all the power to you !

i liked the idea but collecting cloud was kind of, meh! it was funny when you got hit that it would keep spinning. thanks for making this game.

I liked the game, it was creative and funny! I would recommend slowing the speed that you are looping at though, to make it a bit easier and less dizzying.

@lyrcaxis @paulhocker Thank you so much for your kind feedbacks, glad you enjoyed the game! I know the objectives of the game are really simple and don't really make any sense. And there is always the same bird and cloud, so I totally understand the lack of variety! I'm working on a post jam version with clearer objectives, where difficulty will increase a bit over time, and there will be a bit more things to do (power ups, possibly shooting, etc)

@fabula-rasa thank you so much for your warm welcome and for your detailed feedback, it's really appreciated! Glad you liked the game! I wonder why I did not come to godot before, it so much fun to use and simpler that alternatives I was using before, I wouldn't have been able to go this far in the development with what I used before, at least not so easily aha!

Thanks, glad you liked the graphics! Don't worry when I say stolen, it's just that I did not do them myself so I took them online but I made sure they were free to use and share, at least to the best of my knowledge. I wanted to do the music as I do music composition from time to time (and that actually was my first motivation to enter the jam, weirdly), but yeah making the game took all the time I had. It will come soon though, and powerwolf seems a nice choice for the game!

I did not think of having a life system actually but that's a very good idea, you're very right! And as I was planning to add more variety to the game like power ups and shooting, it will be fitting to have more than one chance before dying before dying horribly! Thanks for the suggestion this will definitely be added!

As for the last part you are also right, it becomes hard to follow with time. I guess it's because the backgrounds are moving too fast and have too many colors that can divert the attention, and the loop animation might be too fast as well, all of that is building toward that feeling. I'm trying to work on that as well and I do think this might be the most complicated part as it will need a lot of testing and adjusting

@dans17 Thanks for you feedback, glad you enjoyed the game! You are right about the rotation speed, thanks for pointing that out. I do think the dizziness comes from that quick rotation combined to the speed of background movement. I'm working on fine tuning everything so it gets less tiring for the eyes and the experience gets a little better
fabula_rasa
16. Oct 2020 · 14:01 UTC
@macmist I think that reworking the background colors is a grand idea for the general well-being of the player's eyes. Some more pastel shade of the sky (something like RGB 176, 209, 217 for the sky with its lighter cousin RGB 216, 235, 242 for the clouds might work well) and maybe clouds that are more of a delicate smears on the sky (like cirrus) than those big imposing cumulus you have now.

And yeah, I got that stealing the graphics was a joke - just wanted to follow up with a joke of my own  . It's sometimes hard to convey intention in text, emotes help but not always. Those who actually steal the graphics don't usually advertise it so much

Loved the humor part, but i culdn't stand vary long looking at a looping plane without my eyes get crossed :loop:
