StuckyLoop by ownedstuff

[raw]
made by ownedstuff for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

StuckyLoop is a game where the only way to go is forward. Dodge through fans/bars and laser to get as far as you can! Be sure to grab a couple powerUps from the shop when you die, it'll make the next run much easier. The game is endless so you can play as much as you want. Actual content in the form of new pipes and increased difficulty has been implemented up to distance 5000. We do plan on adding much more post-jam.

The development was pretty smooth compared to other jams we've done. Experience taught us to keep the scope small so we liked the idea of a game that would be basically in a playble state from the first hour. We started by making a pipe manager that could spawn an endless amount of pipes. we only needed to create one pipe and slap the default unity character controller on a capsule to have a basicaly "playable" game. Then we worked on adding a couple different pipes, and a collision system. Later in the development we added the shop interface and then we added a level mechanic where after X distance new pipes would show up.

The whole development cycle went as smoothly as it possibly could right up until the very end. 1 hour before the submission we realised that the game would play just fine in the unity editor but nothing would show up in the final build. It took a while to figure out an obscure bug with scriptable object and our source control solution. In the debugging process we turned off the fog that you can see in the screenshots and forgot to turn it back on before we posted. We'll post an updated version soon.

Link to the shader we used to get the outline on everything: https://github.com/Shrimpey/UltimateOutline

Controls: W - go faster S - go slower Space - Jump

Web: https://mrbamboo.itch.io/ld47-stuckyloop

Known bugs: - The additional jumps from the store do not work in the review build. - We has some build issues before submitting and as part of the debug process we deactivated the fog that you can see in the screenshots. We forgot to turn it back on before submitting.

Edit 2020/10/7 - fixed issue where jump upgrade would not give additional jumps - fixed issue where buying upgrade would overwrite previously bought upgrades - improved collision detection with obstacles when player is going really fast - added fog back into the game

Quite Good but i think that its too hard :( i could even overcome this stripe like obstacle.
But others were nice :) Coins also are hard to collect. Good job!

The colours were beautiful, Honestly, I'd follow this theme a little deeper and maybe explore some led or neon style outlines. (I kinda imaging EL Wire around the blades etc.) It was a little bit challanging off the bat. But overall Beautiful Game. I did phase through quite a few obstacles however.

Overall, I enjoyed the game. But I will say that I had some issues with phasing through some of the objects. Specifically, the large rings, if I went up against the wall and hit the ring, I would fall out of the tube. I also had trouble telling where the hit boxes on the objects were. Sometimes I would lose hearts and some times not for hitting the same area of an object.

Ooh, I like your take on the theme. I definitely wish it was quicker to progress, I died quite frequently and collected very few points. Overall, I really like the game you put together, great work!

I like the idea, but for me it was a bit hard. Initially I thought I had to dodge the 'coins' because I just saw them as obstacles. The hit registration can be a bit better, sometimes I slid through an obstacle and other times I got hit even though I (feel like?) jumped on time.

Fun game, reminded me of the special stages from the old Sonic games on the Genesis.

The changing colors and cell shading was a nice touch. The parellel line obstacle was a bit hard but I like how you have to go up the walls to get through the circle one.

Great game! Avoiding the parallel obstacle is difficult though. Perhaps it should show up later in the game as a more difficult obstacle, not from the star. Just a suggestion :) I had a lot of fun playing it.

The art style was vibrant and really matched the music, it was quite challenging and I feel the collision size of the gems/stars could have been bigger as its quite hard to line up with them exactly. Overall a nice game, well done

Really cool game. I didn't know i can jump the first time but then manage play for a while. was really fun!

@zimny11 yes ! It's probably too difficult for the beginning. For the first ring we plan to put coins in a row aligned in direction the player should jump to show how to cross this obstacle. For us it's easy but we design it and try it so many times hehe. Thanks for review !

@shortbread good Idea ! We should probably put collision box wider or maybe put a shadow on the floor for the coins and for the player to view more easily the perspective. Thanks for the review !

@andrew-white we found the shader online 🙄 hehe. Thanks for the feedback, we should probably do something to make it a bit easier. With power ups it become easy, but the first runs are really hard we know.

@phindiegames thanks for your feedback. You are right, probably we should show explicitly that it's a reward and not obstacles !

@blobo nice ! Thanks for your feedback and for playing. We plan to put more levels and make the difficulty more progressive over time.

Great concept. Really liked the upgrades from the store, and the colours you chose made everything very legible in my opinion!

I did run into a few issues while playing on the web version - it was possible to jump right out of the tube of the level! I did find some of the obstacles also seemed to have strange colliders that I could pass straight through, but it seemed inconsistent as of when this happened.

Really liked the music and it felt like a perfect fit for your game. Would definitely love to have additional music in the shop to play to as well!

Cool and addictive game. I stumbled upon a few collision bugs, and the camera makes it a bit hard to understand what's going on sometimes.
But overall, great game. I would like to play more.
Cheers

@alessia-ip Thank you ! I think it's the first feedback about buy music in shop 😊 It would be a very nice thing to do.

For collision we will do some fixes in next weeks. Well let you know if you want to try it back then hehe

@hakro thanks ! While we were developing the game we were incapable to not play the game ! For collisions we'll do a better version soon.

Thanks for your feedback !

Great game!Like others said, the collisions are a bit weird(to be honest makes the game easier, which is good, considering how bad I was at it).Really liked!

@csomega thanks for playing ! Yes the beginning is a little too hard. We should balance a bit the difficulty curve. Collisions feedback come often too ... we will work on it :)

Very nice game! Really loved the concept of upgrades, made the game more interesting and lasted longer. It's kind of hard to see the objects that you might collide with and at times I'm pretty sure I passed through objects without dying. All in all a really good entry, well done!

A really nice visual style that matched to music well. My first run I avoided the "coins", because they looked scary and didn't look like coins. Good entry!

This was very aesthetically pleasing and fun to play! I wish there were more coins at ground level though, so it would be easier to progress. Also, I just played the web version that supposedly has fixes, but I was still passing through objects at high speeds.
