Carman by steambrain

[raw]
made by steambrain for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

Carman is a game about little guy who's weary of carmic cycle of death and rebirth. He should explore and experience all that world has to offer before he'll be able to escape it.

Since it's my first foray into world of unity programming I'm just really happy to be able to produce something working and thematic.

Thanks to brackeys for assets and insanelly good tutorials for beginners.

Hope you'll enjoy. If you're looking for teammates for next event, pm me, I'd be happy to lend my minor coding skills. Please note the down key for picking/dropping stuff it's really helpfull to pull yourself to new heights, you know.

I couldn't figure out what to do. Everything was too high for me to reach. I'll come back to this game if you comment what I need to do.

Hi, there are a number of objects in the game, that you can pick up with down key and then use as platforms, your best bet would be go for education or drown your sorrows in booze and hit rock bottom

The fact that you are in a reincarnation loop is a really cool concept! The dialog is also very fun to read :smile:
Only thing is that once I was a snake, I got stuck. I couldn't pick anything up anymore... but I did scare the other NPC tho.

@kingdwarf, well this guy certainly got himself up because of you maybe if snake would die afterwards, it would reincarnate into someone more advanced

I didn't entirely understand what I was doing the whole time I played this game, but I did eventually get to the win screen, I think. :smile: I did almost get completely stuck at one point--I had the "world" stuck in the corner with the graveyard, and I couldn't push it to move it out, and picking it up would not work either because it would get stuck in the ceiling. Eventually I managed to get it out somehow and from then on it was not too bad.

I do think the placement of the graveyard could be made slightly less inconvenient as I also accidentally sent my Diploma over there (twice!) and had to die to retrieve it. :laughing:

Anyway, once I began to sort of understand that the game was a puzzle solving game, I started liking it quite a bit. I think the idea of manipulating all these various objects in different ways, and re-exploring the world as different characters, is a pretty good idea. And, I have to say the aesthetic of carrying around remorse the same way you carry around a diploma, is very interesting.

Figuring out what the win condition was, based only on not being able to jump, was a cool moment of realization as well. As well as figuring out what to do as the snake. That was nice.

One tiny thing I liked is that it's possible to get some very large jumps by jumping off a platform in mid-air (although it requires very precise timing!). I'm not sure that that's intentional but in my opinion it's a cool little thing.

So overall, very interesting game. I like the general idea, even if it took me a while to grasp.

Some of the physics caused some frustration, they kept bouncing all over the place. Otherwise, really silly concept executed in a way that put multiple smiles on my face. In the end I didn't finish as Secret kept falling into the hole against my wishes, but I really did enjoy my time with this!

I like this rebirth platformer idea a lot, it got me hooked for good 20m. I came in to ask for help because I got stuck, but the hint in the Honey Pony's comment above got me on the right track, and I achieved Samsara. Thank you @honey-pony, and thanks for the game @steambrain !

I got stuck after playing as the snake and getting up the "Secret" path on the left. I gotta say, the level design here is really inventive and makes a lot of clever metaphors! Pushing the corporate boss down cracked me up. This is a really inventive game and I hope to see a playthrough eventually to see what I missed!

@honey-pony wow, thanks for deep review!
>>One tiny thing I liked is that it’s possible to get some very large jumps by jumping off a platform in mid-air

You actually did it, you insane daredevil! I tried it couple of times but was unable to do

>>I had the “world” stuck in the corner with the graveyard

Yeah noticed this problem at last hour so added a "roof" to graveyard so that players wouldn't just drop to their deaths, ah, it seems should've made items in graveyard respawn also...

@conneli Yeah, I really struggled with all those colliders and stuff, If you know of good tutorials on physics in unity, please tell me, I'd be really greatful!

@eldar thank you for finding time to actually finish the game =) There was planned a great ending with particles and lighting, but I did what I could in time limit)

@dvdfu glad you like it!

@rustywolf Thank you!

I couldn't figure out what to do. I am either a starting character or a hippie, I was only able to advance further using a bug with a high jump.

This was a genuinely puzzling puzzle game with some cool "Aha!" moments. The theming was great and the physics were surprisingly solid, though I did tend to clip through the ceiling when picking up blocks in certain areas (I feel like I should have been awarded honourary nirvana for literally clipping out of samsara). Overall a really great entry.

@etrealjunior You barely rate any games, and go to other people's games to spam your message. Learn some tact and modesty, and follow the rules instead of shameless self-promotion at the expense of others.

The assets feel out of place for this kind of game. Otherwise it's quite an interesting take on the theme.

Hey there!

I had no idea what to do until I read @honey-pony 's comment in the end, but the ending made so much sense that it is on me that one haha

What I think could be improved:

The blocks tended to drift away going to undesirable places (cemetery, to the left)
I never knew when I would really get a reset

What I loved:

The theme was very well applied!
The humor was fantastic! When the snake dude jumped away I almost lost it! Haha
The narrative was pretty good! I thought you were too judgy on the chilex lifestyle until the ending slapped me with a life lesson, well done!

If my comment was helpful, don’t forget to like it! … and if you can, open my profile page and leave feedback on our game as well <3

Thanks for the experience you provided with your game!

I like the idea, and I love how you incorporate the theme into the game. There were a few instances of moving the blocks that made the game a little hard to play, and the controls felt slippery at times. Get those down, and I think this can be a great mini game!

The physics some blocks to get to unreachable places.

You need to achieve Nirvana through loop of deaths and rebirths

@asfdfdfd
You can take your remorse from the depth of alcoholism and use it to get higher in life

@digital-bacon Thank you!
