Medic! by halflemonstudios

[raw]
made by halflemonstudios for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

You are a medic! Keep your simple-minded solider alive by removing bullets from his body and providing heals (and the occasional combat drugs). Use A/D or numbers 1-5 to select actions and SPACEBAR to use them. Move your character with the ARROW KEYS. Survive as long as you can!

Powerups

The red drug makes our muscle guy hyperactive, the yellow one slows him, "3" makes him turn around, "4" is for removing bullets from his body and the last simply heals him a lot at once. The first three are cooldown based, whereas the last two is reloaded when you collect an appearing toolset.

Game is slightly unfinished due to a lot of the team writing theses at the time of a global pandemic. Hope you'll enjoy the game anyway!

We have some ideas for post-LD version, but your ideas are very much welcome too!

Interesting game, but a little confusing as to what the power-ups do.

Thanks for the feedback! Well yes, we didn't have enough time to make a proper howtoplay :( Anyway, the description is now extended with the power-ups' abilities, if you want to give the game another go you can check them there!

I took me a while but I was using WASD instead of the arrows keys (it's what I get for not reading haha). I was confused with the powerups at first but I picked it up quickly enough to survive for 62 seconds (Overdosed him...)! Overall, a great concept for a game.

Really cool idea! If you show better what the power ups do, maybe a little description would be great!

Actually quite enjoyed this, was unique and fit the theme nicely. I agree that it isn't immediately obvious about what to do, but after a bit of testing it can be figured out. Good job!

Thanks everyone! I'm glad you liked the game! Hopefully we can extend this version later to solve the mentioned problems and add more possibilities (like more floors with ladders between them).

Well it's really confusing. I've had a feeling that my player doesn't react to the commands.

@halflemonstudios Interesting take on the theme, never thought of controlling the medic as opposed to the "hero". I was able to keep my hero alive for about 2 minutes. I didn't quite understand the red and yellow icons so perhaps adding a help screen or mini-tutorial could have helped. Thanks for sharing your game. Good job!

its a fun little game but I didn't find it at all confusing..

in fact I think this could make a great game if improved. maybe your character can fly or its a top down and some enemies will target you and you can protect yourself behind the fighters... etc

good idea man.. I wish it had a little bit of sounds and more effects.

@abdurrahman-khallouf Thanks for the feedback! You are right, there is much to do, but unfortunately most of the team was quite busy, so we couldn't realise many planned features :( (yet!) However, you can actually fly using UP arrow key :)
@plepletier Glad you liked it! :)

Interesting take on the theme. Unfortunately, I'm not skilled enough, only made it to 107.22s. ^^

The game mechanics are pretty clever and the game is fun to play. The jetpack is a good idea, letting you hover around without being hit for nothing.
There really are a lot of possibilities for new features and mechanics, it's a really nice "base".

Graphics are simple but they do the job. I didn't notice the "drug level" and "bullets in blood" bars at first, maybe putting them in a "container" with a background would help the readability / intuitiveness of them. The colors used for the drug bar are quite funky haha, good choice considering what it's for.

Anyway, great job, nice concept and good game! o/

@ogma 107s isn't that bad! Sometimes I die much before that (and I played a looot). Thanks for the kindness and suggestion! :)

Love the core idea, it's really smart. Was a bit confused by what the differents ability does. With a better UI and a better comprehension of what everything does it would be really fun to play. Nice entry !

The general idea is cool and I've seen quite some other games already that went this route to interpret the theme. I still liked that you actually are not just a passive observer but an actual character that even takes damage and can die, leaving the soldier to his own devices, The core game play mechanics did work, but really need some improvements in terms of fun. It was quite intuitive to switch the items around and activate them with the space key. I would've rather liked that each power had a specific button (1-5 :P) which would activate the respective power directly (if in reach, of course). Also, the game would benefit a lot form a better ai. The immersion really suffered from the soldier just running from left to right, getting shot in the back. I know of course that this is obviously due to the time restraint of the jam, but maybe you can implement a more dynamic and involving soldier ai in a post jam version. Maybe even include things like an actual battlefield map in which you can progress and have an actual win state etc.

The art is rough but works in this context. Some music and sound would of course improve the experience as well :)

all in all, cool concept but needs some work to be fun for more than a couple of moments. Keep it up and good luck on the post jam version

@karas You are absoultely right, thanks for the honest feedback!
@duke Thank you very much for the detailed critics and suggestions! We were really busy during this LD, so it's really just the realization of the very core idea, but for post jam version your ideas are welcome! Powers actually have specific buttons (1-5 :D), but they just switch to the power, not activate it directly, that's true. We will try out how that feels!
