BLACKLOOPHOLE by A sMILE

[raw]
made by A sMILE for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

Cover.pngYour ship has been disturbed by a black hole nearby and lost a lot of fuel. You had to land on one of the planets to find some, but the black hole seems to be growing closer and closer... As if it can see you... Collect as much fuel as you can and try to escape the disaster which creeps closer every second.

The first three levels are made by hand, but from the fourth level everything is procedurally generated. The reason we didn't only use the procedurally generated ones for the beginning is time  We ran out...

* Controls:* WASD for walking and turning. Space for Jetpack.

* Some post compo mentions: * I am aware the game doesn't make this explicit, but you can pickup multiple crates at the same time. Also, there is a little easter egg if you beat my high score of 23.487. Good luck!

Overall loved the concept of the game. The bars at the top really helped find crates once i knew how it worked. The arrow was also helpful in getting back to the ship. At times i found the movement a little buggy however it didn't take away from the game too much. Great job, enjoyed the game!

It was a cool game! The black hole effect and the music getting more intense I really liked. One thing that got me kind of stuck was when I dropped my crate in the lava in the second level and had a lot of trouble retrieving it.

Interesting concept. Intensifying music was a nice touch. Crates sometimes inaccessible due to spawn location, I had one on top of a Dinosaur? lol was fun though. Good job

@dracesbane You might've been unlucky, but you might've been able to grab it with some well timed jetpack usage.

Round planets were a nice idea! Flying around it with a jetpack is fun. Nice game!

@gemberkoekje Oh I managed to get the one on the dino thanks to some jetpack skills. I saw it as a challenge and kept at it until I got it. But it did cost me too much time though. But was fun! :)

I thought it was hard to get bearings with limited landmarks but the concept was cool and flying was fun :)

I forgot the name, but there's another jam game that is almost exactly like this one, except yours has more action.

This was entertaining for a little while but the gameplay loop needs more meat to keep players engaged.
I like the art style, it had a cool aesthetic to it especially with the black hole in the distance

@skleembof I had the idea to add a mechanic where you need to keep the fuel upright by balancing, but it was slashed due to time ;)

Interesting concept, and definitely hilarious with the spaceman yelling random hurt noises when getting hit by a bear over and over. The graphics probably won't be winning any awards overall (I think the style inconsistency with textures somewhere vs plain materials elsewhere is the main thing that makes it look kinda odd), but I am interested in the gravitational lensing black hole shader that grows over time, it's really well done. Any tips on achieving that effect?

@moffkalast There is a tutorial for a unity black hole shader done with shader forge, I adapted that one so we can use it in the newer universal pipeline shader maker in Unity itself.

Pretty fun game, liked the concept, had some issues with the camera though, thought it was quite disorientating, other than that, solid game!

Totally feels like handmade assets. They are really nice.
Sometimes is quite difficult to get all crates, but create a great balance in a game jam is quite difficult.

Wow, the black hole in the skybox is a super neat touch! I also love the guitar riff when collecting barrels, ha! Great work all around!

Cool concept. The camera movement was a little disorienting and the game could use some air control while jumping. In lvl 2 I often got stuck on the bouncy orange surfaces and couldn't really move horizontally. Also time is a little short in my opinion.

I liked the concept and Bill & Ted guitar, the background music gets you in the mood.
I would recommend to redesign the arrow, gets a bit disorienting but it was fun!

This was a good game, clean for a jam, and funny (bears and dinos on moons XD) music is nice also, good job, adding the jetpack btw was a really good idea, added a lot of fun in my games !!

I was not expecting space bears! The movement was pretty sensitive and taking damage seemed to throw me into the air in unpredictable ways, but overall it was charming and got a couple of laughs out of me. Love the rocket takeoff sound effect.

The jetpack and player movement is really well done! An innovative take on the theme. The guitar lick was a really nice touch for the audio. Overall a great entry

Space bears, how cool is that?

Liked the idea and the setting, cool atmosphere created with these low poly graphics. Nice planets variation. The jet pack is the best feature in this game, so cool to fly with it!

Camera and player movement could be improved tho, sometimes it behave very awkward.

Overall a nice little game! Good Job!

Game is fun and very entertaining, graphics are good and have their own personality and I really like that! However there is a lack in the audio department that makes this game a bit unplayable for me; the main theme is very good and fitting for the tone you were going for, but I feel it could have been a little big longer before it begins to loop, bcs it gets too repetitive and annoying when you get to the other levels, also maybe you could have rendered the song in a way that it loops in a more seamless way, because there are some seconds of silence before it loops back to the first bar. The sound design was not that bad but the electric guitar jingle gets a bit annoying at times.
