Stay Alive 2 Survive is a sequel to Stay Alive which I made for a previous ludum dare. If you forgive the name, it is (in my opinion) a lot better than the last one.

About the Game

This is a survival game, but with a twist. Like most survival games you start in the middle of nowhere with no items, however in this game you also start with no knowledge about how the world will behave.

This is because all of the item types, crafting recipes, and creature types are generated from a random seed. The idea is that as you play with the same seed you will gain familiarity with how the world works, and what the crafting recipes are etc., however once you feel like you are good enough at surviving on one seed, you can switch to another and have a completely new experience.

Disclaimer: Whilst the game will try to balance things, some seeds will be harder than others.

Instructions

Objectives

Achieve a high survival time.

Achieve a high hunt score.

Find out as much as you can about a particular rule seed.

Controls

WASD / Arrow Keys to Move.

SPACE to stay in one place.

L-Click on Creature to Attack.

L-Click on Item to Pickup Nearby Item.

L-Click on Item in Inventory to Equip Item.

R-Click on Item in Inventory to Eat Item.

L-Click on Crafting Recipe to Craft Recipe.

Important

Note that after attacking there will be a cooldown before you can attack again.

Note that without an item equipped you will do very little damage.

Note that each item has a melee range and a throw range, but if you throw your weapon and it kills a creature, the weapon will be destroyed.

Optional Additional Information

Each creature will either be hostile, hostile when provoked, evasive, or evasive when provoked.

It will also have one of the stances above towards every other creature on the game, determined in part by the creatures' relative strengths.

Each creature drops exactly one item, with symbol and colour determined by the creature's symbol and colour.

The items dropped by creatures should be slightly better than those found on the ground.

Crafted items should be better than non crafted in general.

Each crafted item has two recipes which produce it.

Sometimes the terrain will hurt you.

Remark

Unfortunately I didn't have time to add audio so I have opted out of the audio, humour, and mood categories.

Source code is at the bottom of the itch.io page.

Changelog

As is specified in the rules we are allowed to fix some bugs after the competition finished.

At the end of the competition there was a bug where sometimes there were item visuals on the map when there wasn't really an item there, and occasionally there were spots on the map with ghost entities blocking the way. Since these were bugs I spent a brief amount of time after the competition fixing them.

This was a very interesting entry. Randomly generated open world roguelike with crafting. It feels almost too ambitious for the compo

I liked it. The simple graphics work in favor of your game. Since the whole concept of the game is figuring out what the items do, it would have benefitted from more feedback when using them. Most of the time I wasn't sure the item did anything at all.

Nice game overall

Oh, and you might want to rate some games yourself, otherwise the system buries your game. I wouldn't have discovered it if I wasn't explicitly looking for games with zero ratings.
