Hungry Holly by Avon

[raw]
made by Avon for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

Screen_2.png

Holly is hungry, catch the red tomatoes to eat them. Don't let any tomatoes hit the ground. You don't want to eat the green tomatoes, so throw a rock at them instead. Avoid the falling rocks

Move left/right with arrow keys or A/D. Left mouse click or space bar to throw.

You lose if you miss 10 tomatoes, or if you are hit by 10 rocks.

Im a little confused about whats that got to do with the theme but the game is fun overall. Good job!

I got a highscore of 304. I lost quite fast in the end after 280 or something my concentration really dropped :D

It requires a lot of Hand eye coordination:)

The art is beautiful. I love the moving clouds in the background, makes the whole game feel a lot more alive.

I especially like that there is always a way to catch the tomato without taking even if a rock is falling in the same position. You can always either grab the tomato before the rock fell or after due to the fast speed of the rocks. I don't know if that was designed deliberately, if yes that was very thoughtful.

Thanks for playing!

@smackmet The game doesnt have much to do with the theme unfortunately, I abandoned my original idea after the first day so I just focused on creating something not worrying about the theme.

@ausstein 304 Is a pretty strong score. I havent played it a lot myself, but my best time was about 120 sec. The difficulty maxes out after 1 min. I didn't spend a lot of time balancing the game, so I couldn't test if it was always possible to catch it. The spawn locations are completely random, and there is some randomness to spawn timers as well, so there can probably be scenarios where it'd be impossible to catch it or avoid damage.

Please post a web or mac build so more people can play and give feedbacks on your game! :D

@avon the only impossible scenario i can think of in that case is if two stones drop right after one another on top of the tomato. Because if one drops you are always able to catch the tomato either before or after. Genius accidental game design in that case :D

@ausstein There is at least 0.5 sec between each rock spawn, so I guess it should be theoretically possible to catch the tomato between them.

I'm quite impressed! You took what I always considered to be a boring flash game staple, and rejuvenated life into it with beautiful and stylish handdrawn art, a high level of polish and most importantly, fresh new mechanics to keep the gameplay interesting. Really fun, I was surprised how much I liked it!

At first I was thinking the game would be boring but as the difficulty slowly ramped up I was having more and more fun which was a pleasant surprise!

I was firing rocks with the spacebar but they were always going in the direction of my mouse pointer, which seems strange. Cute little game.

Thanks for playing!

@bassguitarbill It is intentional that they go towards the mouse pointer, as that it was you use to aim, but I guess I didn't mention it in the guide, and I could have made it more obvious visually. It'd be way too difficult without the ability to aim, so even though you can shoot with space bar you still need to use the mouse.

A fun little arcade game that I can see thriving on mobile platforms if controls were adapted a little to suit. The difficulty curve ramps up nicely and offers a good challenge. Graphics are cute, and sound matches that to complement the overall tone.

Quite fun ^^

I wasn't using my mouse at first so my first try ended up pretty fast (under 60s :/). I think the distance between Holly and the mouse position determine the speed of the rock too ? Also, when you die by taking too many rock the game still tell you that you missed too many tomatoes (but that's just a detail ^^)

Nice game

Okay, so (at least on my machine) web build was pretty sluggish, and if not for Windows version, my opinion would be much worse.

Which would be a shame, since I quite enjoyed your game ;) The art was great and charming, and I liked the music. Gameplay also was okay. So yeah, nice entry, congrats!

Thanks for playing!

@yohsk13 The distance doesn't matter, they all fall at the same speed, mouse is only used for aiming. I noticed the typo myself after the deadline, not important enough to fix, but it did annoy me :)

@kszaku I've been a bit skeptical about doing web builds for this reason, the performance can sometimes be dodgy, I've noticed it myself when playing other games. Still surprising this game would have performance issues since it's just a 2D game.

funny game) a little sad that you get no points from shooting yellow tomatos. In fact it is harder that collect red ones. Good job!)
