I really liked the concept, the design, and the art. Very original idea!
It was a bit difficult to move as well as to avoid the asteroids. One of the things that frustrated me was having the asteroids spawn directly on top of the ship. OOF!
Anyhow, great game, and great effort. Congrats on your first successful jam!
I could not tell ammo were the little blue dots at first, I thought these were just stars.
But it felt like classic fun.
(You should release a hotfix for that, really)
However, getting past that (And the couple more times I spawned right next to an incoming asteroid), the game was enjoyable. The longer tail picking ammo meaning that the longer you are, the more ammo you pick, and the more you are at risk of being hit is a nice gameplay element.
The wireframe visuals gives fidelity to the original game this was based on, and the color scheme is well chosen. The audio was nice to listen to and fits the game.

On the whole this was really cool entry. Good work!
PS: I also came at this prompt with an asteroids-inspired game. I went the no fuel route, though, and slowly evolved away from the asteroids-style game loop. It's sort of neat to see how we diverged.
