Treble Clef by Brainoid

[raw]
made by Brainoid for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

A rhythm platformer about a desperate composer beating other musicians to compose his music.

https://youtu.be/zJ19HXDDdf4

You are a composer who has no material at all. You don't know what to do. You start with nothing but as you find new instruments and other musicians to learn from, you start to form your greatest song. As you add new patterns to your song, you can see the structure of your song in the sequencer.

IMPORTANT

People were having problems getting stuck after the first enemy. I just figured it out and uploaded another build.

I was saving keystrokes for the rhythm game puzzles lazily in a string. When parsing those strings if you are on a non-US language display, C# parses the strings without considering the floating points and there goes the problem. Thanks for trying the game out. <3

This is amazing! I CANNOT believe you did a combination platformer/rhythm game, and that it plays so well! That must have taken a LOT of work. I am proud of you!

Loved the art, the humor (going left at the intro, van halen - jump :laughing:), the style. And the gameplay was really clean for a game jam game. I figured out the wall jump really quickly, and the mechanics of it were smooth and intuitive. Liked the level design with the 'false' floor bushes.

There seemed like there were some very trivial timing issues with some of the rhythm games. Overall, I think they were FANTASTIC, and added to the vibe of the game overall. Getting the upgrades felt really satisfying, and murdering people with my guitar was really fun.

I got the keyboard at the end, but then was unable to continue right? I'm assuming that's where the game finishes? Also, add an "exit" button to the main menu. :wink:

Again, great job. One of the most innovative and complex games I've seen so far this jam.

@pilarius @Mezeka @theufo Half of the people experiencing this issue and the other half is not. We are still investigating. If you can send us a Log file if it's okay( C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\StiffNecks\The Treble Clef\Player.log ) to bora@brainoid.com

I'll try to fix it if I can find out what is going on. Thanks for giving it a try ^^

@rdcooper Thanks for the amazing feedback. Actually, that's only the 1/3 of the game. You missed an instrument behind. I actually show a message there but obviously it's a little off the screen. I guess from the keyboard player, if you go back down and right, there should be a collectible drum, then you are good to go :) Thanks for giving it a try and thanks for the amazing feedback.

Same problem here with the first enemy. I'm sending the logfile to you, seems an issue with the calculus of the success or something.

I love the idea and the assets, though. Let me know if you fix the game, I'd like to see more ;)

I beat the game!!! That was fun! The song after the boss was tough for me. I too got stuck unable to go right, fortunately I read the comments and found the drum below. I really like the graphics and the curvy land effects. I also really like brainoid's cat.

@theog @mezaka @theufo @pilarius Hey people! The issue is fixed. It was really stupid. If you have a nonUS display on your operating system, C# parses the number strings without considering the floating point value. And then my rhythm game puzzles get screwed. I added a line like

```
CultureInfo culture = new CultureInfo("en-US");
double number = Double.Parse("4.5", culture);
```

and it is fixed. I'd really appreciate if you could revisit our game and try to enjoy it. Much love!

Couldn't go past the first enemy but I'm amased by the beautiful word you did here! The concept is great, I really like the graphics and the light that focuses on the character. Loved to have an ingame tutorial and the popup with the pattern to learn was so neat. I'd play a further developed version of it! Great job!

@tommyflower Thank you. Just to clarify. You couldn't get past the first enemy because it was too hard?

I did it! i finished the piece haha

Well done, i like it, the ground textures and level design was a bit unclear to begin with, i was not sure if i was supposed to be able to walk over some spots, or if i was supposed to be balancing something, or whatever i was supposed to do, i had a hard time with it in the beginning.

I do like how you executed the rythm game though, it's solid, challenging and works well, felt a little out of sync on one of the tracks so i got a little de-synced haha. I found that you could just hit every button, as long as it was on timing, there should be a penalty for missing, and also a penalty for being hit by enemies

@kekkodude Thanks for the lovely feedback. I often tend to make the jam games fairly easy for players to be able to see the most of the content, that's why I didn't implement the penalty for missing thing, people are already having difficulties :) But you are right, in a full game, that's a must have feature!

For the level design I didn't really have too much time, I literally wrote 2 games at the same time :) Everything you say is correct. Thanks again. :)

Really polished! It was hard to tell what was a death pit and what was a secret (though you need to go down there anyways) area. Part of it might be the camera focuses too high up so all drops feels scary.

@ivexnuke I agree. We didn't have much time to spend on the level design while literally making 2 games at the same time :) You are totally right. Thanks for playing! :D

Very solid entry. I really enjoyed the idea of putting together the soundtrack as you collect the instruments. My only complaint would be the rhythm minigame. I think it should go horizontal rather than vertical, it would get easier and make more sense with the keys we need to press.

It would be cool if the mini-games were more clear when you hit the notes. In General, very high quality. It was fun to play. The graphics are nice.

Nice! I love how I can walk left and off the stage while getting a little message about giving up. lol The execution is good and the music fits well with the overall mood of the game. The art style is fun and I can't help but think a little bit about Scott Pilgrim but that isn't bad. I did struggle a little bit with the learning a new instrument section having to use "a s d f" being a little fast for me and my fingers not used to that. So, my recommendation is to perhaps allow the player to have the option to choose a different set of keys like "Arrow Keys" as it might be easier for them and make that part of the game more enjoyable. Very cool :D
