Paint a Solar System by Jayometric

[raw]
made by Jayometric for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

A game about creating a solar system.

Controls: Move by holding left mouse button. Press C to create more star dust. Select planet by clicking it. Change paint mode with buttons. Press ESC to quit. Pressing Space will apply the drawing to the current planet. Pressing Space when not drawing will take a screenshot and save it in the main folder directory. Note* Screenshots from previous plays will be overwritten if more are taken. Change the name or move the ones you want to keep.

Update 1: Currently working on making a button for applying the paint. I notice a lot of people on mobile and because you need to press space it won't work! Will update this accordingly. - Update has been published. Also removed shortcut keys since they only let you paint where you shouldn't be! - You can now just hold the mouse down on the + and - to change the paint size.

I had a little trouble figuring out the controls at the beginning but I had a lot of fun playing around with the game. I like its sandbox approach. Great job

relaxing! When I erased everything I thought I was on a different level for a second, it's got a surprising amount of features. I couldn't seem to get the buttons working very well though

I had fun hoovering up the space dust, hoping to create a larger sun. Suddenly the 3D planets appeared, and I painted up the Earth and Jupiter. Good stuff.

At first when I was drawing, I was like "hmm, okay, so it's like a drawing simulator," but then I saw that you could apply the painting onto the planets, and I don't know why, but that really makes it way cooler! This is a really cool little game, and I hope you do more!

Thanks @seabird I was going to spend more time on polishing but stuff comes up! I was going to have a more natural guiding for the player but maybe I'll get to that after this.

@eog Yeah the buttons only work directly on the graphic itself and not the outside edge, I was going to adjust it but time came up quick! I also wanted to make it so it didn't draw when clicking the buttons too.

Thanks @mattdotam! I knew I wanted to start with a bang and surprise the player. Originally the entire game was just collecting star dust but then I decided that was only the beginning of the players journey. I added the ability to create more since I liked the effect!

Thanks @jordanvang! That was the main feature I had an idea for. I wasn't even sure where to start. I just wanted the player to be able to create their own solar system. There were also moons but they got removed last minute because they were WILD, mind of their own lol. I was going to look back into getting them in.

Very relaxing painting planets simulator. I thought the little mini game at the begining was also a clever start. I would suggest disabling the ability to paint when the cursor is hovering over buttons. I kept adding paint I didn't want when changing colors. Other than that, this was flawless execution.

Hey wow! I would love to paint my own solar system, thank you very much. I got stuck in some of the painting screens, but overall, I really love this idea, and I had fun going to town and drawing and making (tons) of stardust. I can't believe you basically made a small art program, I like it a lot :D

I could see this mechanic being developed into a pretty cool game. Maybe you draw a map that is then overlayed onto a planet? The core of this game worked well, nice job.

Collecting dust is fun. Making dust is even more fun, but you can bypass the entire first part of the game by spamming the C button. The second part isn't really technically a game that isn't too much fun by itself, but could make sense as a part of a bigger game if you could play with the painted planets afterwards.
