Inmate by dib

[raw]
made by dib for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

Controls: - Movement: WASD - Open doors: Space / Left shift / Enter - - When you want to go through a door, but monsters are near you, press Left shift instead. - Attack: Space [Must have weapon equipped] - - Change weapon: Q and E to scroll through - Open chests: Space - Use item: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 [Must be consumable item, such as potion] - Toggle music: M (there are some issues with popping noises, so feel free to mute if that becomes annoying) - Toggle frames per second limitation: L (this may fix stuttering/lag if you experience that)

Info Your goal is to slay all 3 bosses, one in each of the rooms from where you start. The final boss is in the middle room, and is the hardest. Each time you enter one of those doors, a new dungeon is generated. This means you will never play the same dungeon twice. When you die, you keep your items. You can aim to kill every monster in the dungeons, by looking at the counter on the bottom left. (Note: This counter was added post-submission)

Plot Ah, they bring another one to me. I imagine you won't last very long, you might as well make yourself at home. Go on ahead, to the left of you lays the abode of Vebkird the mad and to the right of you the home of Fetuves the unfortunate. The door in the middle? I don't think it should concern you, my fellow inmate.

Bugs (Very rare) Sometimes you are teleported to inside a wall, when using a door - sorry, you must restart the game.

Workarounds - If you notice some "lag", please press "L" so it will draw new frame as fast as possible. - The audio playback might produce popping noises, because of experimental code in the framework. If you find this annoying, you may either press "M" to mute, or remove "assets/sounds/bg.ogg". Do not delete the directory.

Pros:
- Simple, but stylish graphics
- Procedural generated dungeons
- Inventory system
- Lots of enemies and bosses

Cons:
- Music is very loud
- No info about item stats. I don't know how to decide which item I want to take and what I want to drop.
- Attack zone is too small. It is easy to miss attack at enemy even he is in the close range.
- I can't drop weapon that I don't want to use to make easy switching weapons in the fight.

The pixel art is just amazing on this game :) And the procedural level design is fantastic xD I started on top of a breakable box, but the game let me destroy it, that's perfect :D I didn't get stuck there... You did a great job there :)

I like the art and really fun, but it needs a bit of information about every item.

Very nice~

Only complaints are that the invintory system is odd, and the collisions are odd, too.

Have a great day~

Would like the music to have looped instead of starting and stopping abruptly, and a lot of the times my weapons wouldn't work. But LOVE the design and the oeverall aesthetic of it, looks stellar.

Nice little game with lots of enemies! It is a bit difficult to hit things or to know where your weapon is going to strike.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

@sir-galloy-de-fierpate That's unfortunate. All I can suggest is to try on another computer.

@ben-ash Yeah, the music was done very last minute, but at least there is a mute option if it's annoying :)

I really enjoyed the initial art that shows all the enemies, I think if I was together the page of the game would draw more attention.

Love the pixel art, but it's confusing that the character faces diagonal directions when you use WASD to move. Hard to tell if my attacks were hitting.

Great work! Cool gameplay, nice graphics. As it has already been pointed out, it feels weird having diagonal-looking characters in this vertical-horizontal world. Also, I would prefer not to have movement of camera when switching between rooms - I think immediate switch would be better, otherwise it distracts you. And I suggest to add some global map to help navigate between rooms.

Crashes directly after start. I would really like to try it if you manage to fix the startup bug

@bender-biber So you're the third one commenting about it. Hmm, it seems it's a bigger issue than I anticipated. I'll take a deeper look into this. Do you mind telling me your graphics card, and whether or not you have updated your drivers? Thanks. @huntrox @sir-galloy-de-fierpate

This is a cool game. The art style is great. So many items and so many enemies (and bosses!!!), that's impressive. The music is a bit repetitive though. Also I had some difficulty aiming (like the box can be destroyed only from the bottom). As others pointed out, the global map would be very useful. In the second dungeon I went though the only way and another side of the level was behind the wall. Restart helped.

@suvrik Thanks for your comment! There are a few issues indeed, but what is LD without bugs. :)

Very nice game! I found a few bugs though: After like 3 runs I kept spawning on top of very hard bosses for some reason. Also if my HP was reduced to 0 I could still attack and would not die while I kept attacking. I also miss some basic sfx of things like attacks and equiping items. Great work still!

I liked the game, its progression is very interesting. But some things bothered me. The song is pretty annoying LoL. And the mellee weapon's radius of attack is very short, so you need to attack very closely. Nevertheless, there is a lot of content made for a jam game. Congratulations! Keep it up!

I didn't really know what any of my items did, when I used them I couldn't see any difference. And I got stuck by enemies a lot since I couldn't move past them to escape. Thought it would've been nice to see the player look in the direction they're moving - if you wanted an isometric look I would've stuck with the isometric movement. But nice game to play overall, think you guys have the potential to make something truly great if you had smaller scope.

@mashupgames Thanks for the feedback. The items just give you different stats really. And you're right, we should have focused more on developing a few good features, instead of many unfinished ones.
