The graphics work. The game is easy, but for a Ludum Dare I don't mind.
It is a shame that you don't have sound, it would have made it better.
A nice tribute to your cat.
Anyway...
Loved the game! The lack of sound was quite jarring as it felt like playing muted and the controls messed with my browser a little :stuck_out_tongue: it's alright though because it managed to give me a constant firing gun! Quite handy. Movement was smooth and the range of different weapons made saving the cute little cats all the more satisfying :grinning:
The graphics are brilliant! Consistent and cute style with some nice particle effects mixed in. Overall a solid entry, great job!
The game is simple, yet well-executed, and surprisingly addictive. Every time you see a cat get picked up, it's a mad scramble to get to the offending UFO before it takes off - and because the map is so large (by shmup standards) and there are other UFOs all over the place, it's actually pretty challenging to get there. I certainly couldn't manage it every single time, though I only lost about two or three cats per level.
There's a noticeable (but smooth) difficulty increase across the three levels, but the steady stream of power-ups helps alleviate it and also adds a true sense of progression. The graphics are very well-done, too. All it really needs is some music to tie it all together, and maybe some more levels with a greater variety of enemies.
Good job, well done!
This is excellent game for compo. It's hard to make anything really great in that time limit, but this is great.
Yes, the game is a tribute to my fluffy friend who passed away while I wasn't at home - could not say goodbye. I was in Sweden in the gamedev community Spelkollektivet. We had level design workshop and a gamejam on site, and it was awesome. Here are some great games created by other jammers you should try: [Carl Currency - Expert Exchanger](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/carl-currency-expert-exchanger), [24 hours](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/24-hours) and [The Circle](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/$147168)
@webox - you're right - the game is not connected to theme - I had the idea to relate with the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: before destroying Earth Vogons decided to capture all Cats as they thought cats may become handy later in dealing with Mices. The theme was supposed to revolve around trading own spaceships and other stuff for captured cats with some venal Vogons.
@conk - sorry to hear that, but we can only be glad for having such lovely and playful companions, even for a limited time.
@f1krazy - hey, I contacted Mike and he was kind enough to set my game for the Compo.
@goerp yeah, *H*LL is definitely cute! x)
@dining-philosopher, @tommyflower, @cheesepencil, @yojammerjammer and @tamail - thanks! I will consider improving the controls in my entry as it was mentioned by most of you, also will browse through your games in a bit while..
The gameplay is simple but you can play it very well. What I really like is the map at the top of the screen.
Congratulations on your game.
It's nice looking. Plus, the minimap at the top was a great choice so we can stay alert about everything.
I only wanted some audio here, but it's fine.
I like how you expanded upon the Defender conventions by adding more power-ups (although I had a tough time hitting stuff with the rockets).
This is your 20th rating, so you should be able to get a score now! Nice work.
