Nepton by Juutis

[raw]
made by Juutis for Ludum Dare 45 (COMPO)

Nepton is a puzzle/RTS hybrid (the RTS elements being really, really light, mind you) where you play as a divine entity conquering a world covered in water. There's some onboarding in the game, but in case that's lackluster here's the short of it:

  • Each level has a bunch of enemies and enemy territory
  • Kill all enemies and conquer all their land blocks to beat a level
  • Gain territory by first raising a block of land, then building a Hole-in-Ground on it and using your creatures to smack enemies
  • The War Statue will grant permanent buffs to your creatures' max health and damage
  • You need Power to raise land and build structures. Gain Power by defeating enemy creatures (2 per kill) and capturing enemy land blocks (10 per block)
  • Right-click on land blocks to order ALL your creatures to go there - and attack everything they encounter.
  • The creatures have a mind of their own and once they see an enemy they'll attack without hesitation. You won't be able to order them around when they're fighting.
  • The creatures aren't exactly smart so you may have to guide them around the islands a bit.

UPDATE 2019/10/07: Added standalone build (Windows) and configured WebGL build to be graphically on par with the standalone version.

There's so much to love about this entry. The 3D is used to support the gameplay style, and the gameplay loop is a lot of fun.

This is the most fun i've had playing gamejam games this far. Really well designed, and done. You must be an expert in time management ;)

I liked that game was pretty fun! I think you should be able to rotate buildings and if you have sent your creatures to one spot, instead of making them standing still they could bob around that point.

Also the first time I played wasnt very clear that I should had made a land next to the enemies since I used all my power before getting to the enemies. Apart from that pretty cool and fun game!

The land deformation effect was really nicely done. Reminded me a little of that old "Black and White" game. Good job.

It's a cool game but after some level it lack a bit of renewal, should have more actions or at least the units should move a bit faster.

Increadible for a compo game. One thing this game could really use is a speedup button. Other than alway waiting i had a lot of fun playing this. Good job

... I spent an hour on this game... It was fun. Really good game where the sound design makes the game. Did you record your team for the soundeffects ? Even for the fire sound ?

Thank you all for the feedback! Really warms my heart to hear you've enjoyed the game.

@sir-galloy-de-fierpate: Yes, each and every sound was recorded with my own mouth. :)

Great game, simple rules but addictive. Difficulty buildup is good, could be a bit faster. Faster creature movement would also help. I'm looking forward for a version where you can continue where you left off!

The pacing is great, by world three the necessity for strategy is clear, each stage after the depth of the game increases and you instruct the player perfectly along every step. Audio is pleasant, graphics are just right with it's pikmenesque feel. A great submission!

It feels really well polished and has a cool strategy style. I would have liked to be able to speed up the gameplay a bit with a button, but I love how the game looks and feels. And I love the unable to place sound effect :D Great job!

I really loved the sound effects in this game. I'm always a sucker for sfx made acapella. It was a little frustrating that the pathfinding wasn't slightly better, but it was still a very nice little game to play.

My minions got stuck at one point and they froze. It was really sad. Except that, good game!

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the feedback, the nice words and criticisms alike.

I wholeheartedly agree with the game being a tad too slow-paced. I believe the issue is inherent to the whole design of the game, especially the way the buffing statues work. I actually dislike the current design quite a bit and I'm trying to re-design parts of the game as a personal exercise (I've _never_ done anything even close to this ). Maybe there's a post-jam version coming up!

@ryu: Thanks! Don't dig too deep though, you might find something nasty!

A really complete game! Nice tutorial, seemed well balanced (I haven't finished it yet), nice simple visuals. Only thing I'd change would be to increase the complexity curve a bit.
