Neon Void by egawag

In Neon Void, you play as a shining beacon of hope in a world of unforgiving darkness. Dodge around malicious shades who are intent on shattering your spirit. Collect and use seven bright power ups that have been scattered throughout the world and bring light back to the universe!

Use the keys W, A, S, and D to control your character. Follow the bright wisps at the edge of your screen to find power crystals, each unlocking a new ability to use against enemies.

Find all the crystals to summon a mysterious force into the world.
Could that be the key to defeating the darkness once and for all?!

I especially like what you did with the ending.
Edit: one minor flaw I think the game has is the difficulty. To me, it seemed quite easy collecting all the powers, I think I encountered only 3 evil shadows? At the end, when moving in to summon the secret power, I really enjoyed the difficulty. In my opinion, that's how the game should have been the whole time. ;)
I did wish the controls were slightly different. Having to select an ability and then press space felt like an extra step, why not just have them activate on the initial keypress? I also found myself always wanting to throw blocks with a click instead of with spacebar. Even still though, the game felt awesome to play.
Loved how the ground cubes raised up around your character. The music and mood was great and really made for a relaxing play experience. The minimalist graphics style suited the game very well and looked awesome. The only thing I can think of is that I would have like the cubes I picked up to connect to the nearest side so I could shoot in more than one direction.
Great entry. Good job!
I really liked the end animation, it was the icing on the cake!
The team did great work on this and all aspects feel extremely polished.
As a programmer I'm curious about how you were fading all the music! That was so well done!
Also, a good ole IEnumerator Lerp for the fading at the end.
Otherwise, this entry is very good. Music & sounds are awesome. The art is a example of minimalist done right. And the gameplay is fluid. Good job!
Thanks for the advice! It means a lot.
Had a lot of fun "
What else ?
Also really like the ending. I see what you did there.
Switching between controls was a little awkward, probably would have been easier if each number immediately triggered the action, but I made it work.
But yeah nice! I think the only thing this left me feeling is that all these nice visual effects and the whole vibe of it would have been great in a game with more substance behind it. But obviously it's tricky to get that going in a game jam :P
So the lights effect when you die is a particle effect that spits out a bunch of long images. I made six colored glowing strips that I imported into Unity as images. The particle effect emits a bunch of these images really fast, and instead of making them fly out I just made the particles get bigger over time, then shrink down right before disappearing. I hope that helps!
If you have anymore questions you can just @ me and I'll make sure to help you out!
I really liked the minimalist graphics and the general mood
The only thing i could think of is that it was slightly underwhelming but when you die you just try again.
If there was a bit more content with using all of the powers with some better controls (maybe using the mouse and shift/ctrl to decide which ability is used).
But otherwise, really good game I am looking forward to what you will be making in the future ;D
I loved the enemies, they just go so well for this game, that slow rotation allows the player to find a cube or to escape the enemy by manouvring, my respect on that.
The map generation is a seperate talk. That is what makes this game really stand out like a lot. Its very unique and extremely statisfying! If the game is bad I dont go falttering for karma, unlike some people, but this design of the world truly deserves a high rating from me!
Only problem with this game is that enemies dont really get harder so you collect the abilites but never get to use them in a fight, thats what I didnt like, but the game was meant to be relaxing I assume, and it had those chill vibes.
Overall there wasnt anything wrong with the game apart from length.
You can tell from it was fun to play and even after death you dont mind going back, to collect an ability, a lot of people quit the game after death, but you nailed it.
Good Job.
Our game is similar in concept where you get abilities as you go, while you are in darkness until you get the light, and it has very nice particles made by me. After you get the abilities you need to kill more enemies to geth crystals from them and improve (in order to fight the boss and learn the story)
If you want you can check it out, Im sure you will like it, the VFX I made this time fit very well. We started rating a bit late so we need 3 more people to rate the game!
Thank you for putting your time into
this game, from lots of crap games, actually well made games let me enjoy the rating process!
Negatives;
-No varying difficulty,
-Difficult controls
-no real use of abilities
-short and wish there were more level design.
Thank you everyone for all the amazing feedback!
We are going to continue working on the game, and all of your suggestions have made our development path clear and full of exciting new content. We plan to implement and change these aspects of the game, based around all of your feedback so far:
A quicker way to select abilities,
Mouse 1 will use abilities as well as the space bar,
Controller support,
A lighter build of the game that will run in most browsers and potentially on mobile,
Configurable Graphics Settings,
Survival Mode,
Better difficulty balancing,
Abilities are farther away and harder to acquire,
Variations to the environment,
Special enemies,
And even a Boss Battle!
