Land for Sheep by Pincushion

[raw]
made by Pincushion for Ludum Dare 45 (COMPO)

There is only energy. From your energy, land and life will be created, and the land and life will return its energy to you.

The goal is to expand. Expand indefinitely. Good luck.

Controls

  • Place tiles and animals using the left mouse button.
  • Consume animal energy by clicking animals with the left mouse button.
  • Use WSAD to move.
  • Use the mouse while holding the right mouse button to look around.
  • Press escape to see the instructions in-game.

Notes

  • All animals need to eat. Without food, they die.
    • The orange bars above their heads indicate their hunger.
    • Sheep and cows eat grass.
    • Wolves eat sheep.
  • The animals will multiply after some time, if they survive.
    • The pink bars above their heads indicate their ability to mate. Empty bars signal readiness. It's like a mating call, but with bars.

This is a nice little game. It feels satisfying when you get a sustainable feedback loop going. I felt like the camera controls were a little janky. I had to adjust the camera whenever I moved along the z axis. I like that you went for 3d models, but the terrain could use a bit more work, maybe use something other than planes for the terrain.

The animal and world textures don't seem to be loading

Enlarging the land that can be used is fun and sometimes the animals are hidden by the land. And it may be better if is can speed up.

Took me a while to get the game loop, but once I did I figured out the idea is to get something sustainable going. Neat idea. I did encounter a bug where it would say I was out of energy but I still had some left. My favorite aspect of the game was developing the land outwards. Good job.

@twinturbodouche That's too bad. Thanks for trying.

I liked building up the ecosystem here and figuring out how it all fits together. Unfortunately, I had a problem where lots of animals would get stuck on the same tile and starve.

Expanding is fun!

I can't lie, the goofy animal portraits were what got me into the game
it's a neat little concept, well done!

hmmm cool idea, it matches its theme, but the fun part is still lacking for me. Nevertheless great job doing it on your own!

Interesting game, I really like the music, and the noise the animals make works really well. I did find that I could only place rocky tiles but the animals still seemed to be able to thrive, so it didn't seem to matter too much.

Interesting idea but kinda confusing execution. Also, have problems withloading of textures. Why do you need to spawn wolves in this game?

@lesinvisible I didn't get the chance to balance the game, let alone fix all of the bugs. The wolves are meant to provide you with a lot of energy when you kill them, so you can continue to make land. They also eat the sheep, which might be useful if there isn't enough grass. That was the idea anyway. I appreciate the feedback, and thanks for playing!

Seems very nice but I couldn't get my balance right and kept dying. I never was sure what the difference between cows and sheep was?

@locomule The game really needed a tutorial (I crammed this info into the esc menu). Eventually, the new tiles are rock instead of grass. The cows fertilize the rock tiles into grass. Thanks for the feedback!
