Living Forrest by Majadroid

[raw]
made by Majadroid for Ludum Dare 45 (COMPO)

In my game "Living Forrest" for Ludum Dare 45 you take control over a forrest. But you have to start with nothing. There is not a single tree.

You have to manage your forrest to protect it from the human lumberjacks. Choose the right trees to plant. You will have to expand to survive. Make sure, that you have always enough water. Plant strong trees to hold back the heavy machines that come the human cities.

How to play: - You can only plant trees on the grass. - To expand the grass area, you have to plant the "Tree Of Life". It will spread out the grass. - To plant trees, you need water. The "Deep Root Trees" will extract water from the ground. - To attack the lumberjack machines, you can use the "Spike Tree". But they cost you one water per month each. - Spike trees have not so much health. You can protect them with "Hard Wood Trees". The spikes can still attack, if there are other trees in front of them. - If you don't have water, your Spike Trees won't attack. - When your trees are not attacked by lumberjacks, they will heal - or even grow, if they are healthy. - Try to survive as long as possible. - To win the game, you have to destroy the cities to the left and right with your spike trees. - If there is no tree and no grass left, you have lost.

For the source file use ZIP the password "LD45".

I released version 1.2 as Post-LD-Version, where I decreased the difficulty a little bit and added some tiny new features. Both versions are available on itch.io.

This game is one of my favorites so far. I kept running out of water. I really like the concept and it has a good difficulty!

it's challenging and I like the Idea, these type of simple games can create awareness for deforestation

Great game! It supports the theme perfectly and it's actually fun to play around, it is a bit difficult though to manage it on the start with enemies coming, but still it's a brave entrance, good job!

Great concept. It was good to play something like this. Absolutely loved the sound effects

Great job. Best use of the theme I have seen so far. The only critique I would give would be to maybe ramp the difficulty a bit slower...maybe less enemies at first. Also, if you hit escape at the menu it puts you in an empty state. Very well done though!

wow, this game is brutal! :D my forest couldn't survive for long, sadly!

Very charming little game, fits the theme perfectly. Nice graphics and audio, great job :)
(very difficult though, could maybe be a bit more balanced and with a better feedback at how attacking trees are dealing damage but still very nicely done for that little amount of time !)

I was play it multiple time and i like it. Little feedback: Game is very hard, maybe if lumberjack go back after finish cuting one tree, it can be great.

Very difficult. Maybe I'm just bad at the game, but I found it really hard to hold back the onslaught of bulldozers that started showing up. I enjoyed this game besides that point. You've got nice sounds and music that don't wear on the ear and thats really good.

Ouch! This was hard. 9 years, 3 months was my best score. A nice take on the tower defence genre. Gg!

I like this simple neat idea of forest managing, you made a really cohesive gameplay around few mechanics, well done.

A very nice game. I like the music, and graphics.

One minor thing I'd have liked to see is having the various types of tree you can or can't currently plant be highlighted.

Woh! It took me some time to understand the concept in a way that I managed to survive more than 3 years but in the end my forest lived until 14 years and 10 months. Well done game!
Unfortunately is the topic such an important one....

takes some time to really absorb the rules, but once you're in control it gets enjoyable. Very nice.

This is challenging to beat! I wasn't able to beat this game, but that's cool. I really like the mechanics here. The gameplay is addictive. The music is nice.

Fun and interesting game. Maybe add some text somewhere where it tells you how much water you gain per month

Really nice game, i had good vibes to WC3 TowerDefence maps... after 11years it kind of gets boring ( for me atleast ) but there is a lot of potential IMO. try to work on this great idea after the jam ^^

Nice strategy game, reminds me a little bit of Tower Defense. In the end it gets really tough, I was around year 14 when an army of bulldozers teared my forest down :'|
It's a nice touch to see the trees slowly growing over time, especially when you manage to survive for more than a couple of years - good job with the graphics too, everything is really nice to look at!

Cute graphics and nice gameplay.
There are a few things I would adjust:

1. When you try to change the tree type while you are in a position where you can plant, you will plant the currently selected tree before switching over. I would suggest you check if one of the tree buttons is pressed and if so don't plant the tree. Alternatively only plant trees when the mouse is above the groundplane.
2. New patches of grass grow too slow. Even with multiple trees of live you can not replant fast enough against the bulldozers. I was accumalating a lot of water but had no way of spending it fast enough against the bulldozers
Overall a very good entry, well done

Interesting game, though quite difficult :) I couldn't survive more than 3-5 waves of enemies (4 years 8 months is my top score) whatever strategy I did try. Anyway, I really like the idea and the implementation. Great job!

This game is very difficult for me, but I tried many times. I really like the concept and the cute style. The idea of the forest is very green and it pleases me. I would like more variable difficulty. But I think it's great and challenging, nice job!

Good strategy game. But very hard. Maybe give the spike trees more power and show a durability/health bar on each tree and the enemies.
But I like it, great and funny idea.

Cool game, I like the semi-tower-defense feeling of it. I liked the background music and the sound effects that the machines and trees had. I would have liked a way to start over without having to restart the web browser. This was a great game that well captured nature fighting back against encroaching civilization, and as the machines kept having more health it felt like it went how that would actually go. Fun game, I would love to see this game with a bunch more polish!

The game is BRUTAL. So hard to survive more than 2-3 waves. Other than that though, what a great project with a good message too. Very interesting take on the tower defense genre.

Before the jam started I really wanted to make something with trees. You made beautifully. Great ideas and balanced gameplay that engages you to find the better solution. I enjoyed playing and will play it again :) The machines sound is funny lol.

Game is very hard, I survive only first waves, I tried many times, but unfortunelty machine kill me every time, even when I tried change strategy.

+ for music and sounds

Simple vector graphics fits in to the mood of music.

Fun, but hard, but I uderstand that there is no time for play testing and balancing :)

For me, it actually is balanced. It is intended to be hard, but it is possible to survive and even to destroy the cities. Try expanding with trees of life and immidatedly protecting them with up to three spike trees and one hard wood tree, as grass spreads out. With this in mind, it is possible to wind the game.

It seems you found a good strategy to survive. Maybe you are in the mood to try out the post-LD-version. There has not much changed, but now there is a heavier enemy later in the game and more important: It is now possible to destroy the enemy cities and win the game.

Awesome game! I played it for a very long time. Unfortunately I was not able to reach the cities. It seams that the tree of life does not expand the grass anymore (or very slowly) once it is older. This made it quite difficult to expand.

Quite a learning curve on this but once you get into it, it's a nice little sim. Graphics and sound fit the mood of the game.

I really enjoyed this entry! It really gripped me in terms of challenge and wanting to try out new approaches to see what works. The artstyle and music work really well together I think. The enemy noises were pretty funny. Overall I had a lot of fun with this entry!

I love this idea! I haven't seen anything quite like it as far as TD games go, but it would be great to play more games like this.
