LD45 - Start with nothing

DeckerTitle.png

You play as a nethacker, using your trusty cyberdeck to battle against other hackers in this free-for-all tournament. Upgrade your gear and prove that you've got what it takes to pwn your enemies. Five wins in a row and you win! But don't lose or else your deck will fry.

On your turn you can either use a floppy disk to run a program on the target or "pass" your turn to code a new program. After each win you get a Hacker Token which you spend/save to get extra Modules to enhance your cyberdeck. Each fight you will Start With Nothing so you must code new programs each time.

Card Effects

  • Damage: reduces target's hit points
  • DOT: reduces target's hit points over time
  • Heal: restores target's hit points
  • HOT: restores target's hit points over time
  • Guard: reduces incoming damage
  • Weaken: reduces the damage a target can deal
  • Strengthen: increases the damage a target can deal
  • Biofeedback: prevent the target from drawing cards
  • Reboot: remove any timed effects from yourself and reset your deck to nothing

Module Effects

  • Hard Target: Always have 1 defense
  • Trojan: Always add 1 to DOT damage
  • Half Adder: Always add 1 to immediate damage
  • Grip Gloves: Increase hand size by 1
  • Passive Scanner: Restore 1 hit point each turn
  • Floppy Drive: Play 2 cards a turn

BUG FIXES:

  • Fixed Module name
  • Fixed hp not resetting after each fight
  • Fixed disks not resetting after each fight
  • Fixed level and xp not resetting after each fight
  • Fixed code program screen overflow bug
  • Fixed bug where Biofeedback wouldn't expire

Are you going to publish a WebGL version?

@snufkinshat yes, that will hopefully come soon

I flatlined at the third guy, but not before getting a bonus round with -1 HP. I think that was more an immersive feature than a bug though, given the theme of this game :)

TBH it was hard to figure out how the game loop worked, and I never quite figured it out, unfortunately. I like the idea though, and it seemed like it would be fun with a stronger handle on how the turns/plays work. Particularly, I was confused about what was happening when I hit "Code Program" vs clicking on one of the disks in the bottom left.

@drprettypatty Ya sorry about that. I was rushing the post and forgot to include instruction. I've updated the post but here they are as well.

After each win you get a Hacker Token which you spend/save to get extra Modules to enhance your cyberdeck. Each fight you will Start With Nothing so you must code new programs each time.

Thanks for playing and pushing through even though it wasn't clear what to do. And thanks for your feedback. I really enjoyed this years. I felt like I had a pretty solid idea for a game. I unfortunately had less 24 hours to work on it this weekend so I didn't have much time for polish

welldone! But it’s little hard.It would be better if the UI was added to the dynamic effect.

@appix ya unfortunately I didn't get to the balance pass so the numbers are pretty arbitrary, sorry! Thanks for playing though

Pretty fun! Though at level 6 I didn't have access to any programs I coded anymore...

I am sorry but I can't rate you better than 2.5 five becouse![Screenshot (83).png](///raw/49f/11/z/27238.png)

Very nifty game! Was completely shut down by third (?) opponent, but very nice overall. Manually ending turn seemed unnecessary as I seemed to only have one action per turn.

@sode I'm not sure how you got up to 45HP! Max HP should be 20. The reason you are getting so many programs to choose from is from your level. The amount shown to you is based on your level and I didn't anticipate anyone getting above level 5. That's why they're going out of bounds. While I think that a 2.5 rating is pretty harsh for such a cosmetic bug, I thank you for trying it out.

Edit: I have fixed the bug.

@henrik-pettersson Thank you for trying it out! Balancing is definitely an issue I didn't have time to resolve so I'm sorry that that affected you. If by "manually ending turn" you mean clicking the "Do Enemy Turn" button, that is just because I didn't have time for animations or things to denote that the enemy was taking his turn. Without that, it would go so fast I thought it would be confusing if you took your turn and then it was immediately your turn again (also why I added the enemy play log).

But also FYI there is a way to increase your actions per turn! Acquiring an extra Floppy Drive via the module shop allows you to execute 2 programs per turn!

Really fun concept! I did get stuck in a loop against an enemy who kept playing attacks that make me skip my turn but I was also regenerating HP as fast as he could hit me. It would be pretty hard to find every edge case in a card game with this many different effects however. Nice work!

A good spin on the "card game"-style  congrats on a good entry - I think the sound suited the look and feel quite good :thumbsup_tone1:

I really enjoyed this game. It is a great take on the card game genre that adds to it in a new way. It would be interesting to see this developed in to a multi-player game where I could play against other human opponents. I enjoyed the aesthetics and appreciated that you kept the audio simple.

Hmm, it was fun until he played Biofeedback on me, and it seemed to permanently stop me from drawing cards, I just passed for the next 20 turns as he whittled me down (without playing biofeedback again) :(.

Wish it told me what the upgrades did, I have to keep looking back here to find them.

Like the idea, wish I could play more than a couple battles before getting stun-locked :(

@jimbly ya sorry about the balancing issues. Just kinda had ideas and put them in without time to see if they were overpowered or not. I'm glad you enjoyed it otherwise though. And ya, was really hoping to have in game descriptions of things but didn't have the time

I think the balance would be fine if the card just affected one turn, but as-is, it appears to be an instant-death (well, slow-death) card, as they use it once, and there's literally nothing you can do for the rest of the game other than pass.

@jimbly Oh I think I misread your original comment. I thought he kept playing biofeedback. That's really weird if you were just permanently stunned. That's definitely a bug. Sorry about that!
