Colour Shot by HumphreysMedia

[raw]
made by HumphreysMedia for Ludum Dare 45 (COMPO)

You start with 0 points, but the aim is simple. Shoot as many pink circles and gain as many points as you can! ColourShotFinal.gif

Left click the pink circle to shoot bullets and gain points, currently the highest score is 1105, good luck!

Made as part of a small university project in Unity. Sorry for there being no sound, it completely slipped my mind when making the game, hope you enjoy and have a wonderful day!

Nice graphics and simple gameplay, but a visual feedback on shooting could have made all the diffearence to the game UX.

@nachtwitch Thanks for compliments! The hit detection only works when the pinks circles are clicked on, so mouse click won't work when clicked on anything but the enemies. If there is an issue other than that, please let me know!

@artyom-volkov Thanks you! I had a particle effect on the player originally and I can't believe I took it out for the final version. Will keep your comment in mind when making my next game!

@pixamentory Thanks, I was going for that idea. I was inspired my Asteroids, as well as a quick arcade game my friend made that had bloom all over it!

Not sure if it has any connection to the theme though.

Great style, and liked how some shots could take out multiple targets when timed right. There's a lot here to expand on, as it gives me modern Missile Command vibes.

@cobear25 & @alphaden Thaanks for the comments, I wish I added some audio, if I did it probably would have been some retro arcade shooting noise and some kind of 80s techno in the background. Next time I'll add some audio for sure! :)

@barrier Thank you for the feedback, a local player mamager to get 1120 and he said that his hand needs a rest afterwards and his eyes started watering from all the bloom. It was just a mini university project I was making and I thoight technically you start with 0 points, which is nothing.

@kirbloid Thank you! I have a few ideas to span upon this game, like adding audio, maybe reducing the screen shake on the bullet impact and adding a play field so then the enemies spawning from the top and bottom don't take you by surprise when they turn up.

Thank everyone for playing and voting for my game!

super juicy effects! good stuff! I also like how the pink circles keep swarming you even after your death
🎤 HumphreysMedia
09. Oct 2019 · 16:05 UTC
@sharkwithlasers 1. Great userrname 2. Thank you! At first I forgot to destroy them after the player death so it did kind of brerak the game, but that's probably one of my favourite parts about my game, adds a little edge to the overwhlming power of the pink circles.

The effects and lighting were super pleasing to look at! My score was 90, I unfortunately couldn't get to 100  The particle effects were also really cool, some audio would have been nice but then again it is a jam and there are a lot of time constraints, anyway I had fun experience playing your game! Overall, this was very good jam entry! PS the neon graphics were epic!
🎤 HumphreysMedia
09. Oct 2019 · 16:21 UTC
@black-flag I would have loved to add in some audio, I'll definatley add it next next, funnily enough it just slipped my mind until I saw the audio category! The neon graphics are done using the bloom effect, which I got from the asset store, Brackeys has a good tutorial for it! If it helps my highest score is only about 150, turns out I'm not very good at my own game XD

@nisovin I'm sorry about your hand, there are idle games out there that'll help calm the nerves, however if you are tempted the highest score so far is 1105. Thank you for the feedback either way!

Ha ha ha ! Beware the LORD OF SHOOTING ! Got 154 on my second game (the first was to understand). Simple but fun. I still got a question... why shooting on pink circles ? Is it because they don't have the same look at us ? (Just joking but when I see "Color Shot" it made me laught for the same reason XD)
cirno

The animation of shooting is simple to make but awesome in effect. I also believe that the mood of game will be enhanced if sound effects are added when shooting or hitting a pink circle.

@sir-galloy-de-fierpate Love the joke, I should've added some triangle in the mix so there wasn't circle-ism. Glad to hear you enjoyed my game!

@cirno Thank you! I plan to make another version in the future where I plan to add a few features and bring some sound effects into the mix. Glad you liked it!

Peaceful and enjoyable game! Played it to 300. Very nice visuals, pleasant to watch. Sound and extra points / effects when hitting on the circle would have been awesome. I also lacked the ability to shoot without a clear target, but that might be on purpose. I enjoyed it, nicely done :)

09. Oct 2019 · 17:54 UTC
Strange mechanic in which you can shoot only directly in enemies kinda contrintuitive to what you're acustomed to. Also, the slowprogression of difficulty makes it rather tidious. On the other half absence of sounds and music makes it more alienating, in space no one can here youplay this game.
🎤 HumphreysMedia
09. Oct 2019 · 18:01 UTC
@jakob-willforss The ability to shoot only happens when the player clicks on the pink circles directly, but I'm glad you enjoyed my game!

@lesinvisible I plan to make it progressivly difficult when I got back and change a few things! Can't wait to add sound to it too!

@piturnah I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it! It does get weirdly hypnotic when playing for a while, but when I come back to it after the game jam finishes I'll add audio and post it on my Twitter

@onury Thank you! I wanted to go simple as I really wanted to incorporate bloom into my game and I feel like detailed characters would get lost with in the glow. I was thinking of adding other enemies that might be harder to click and be a range of colours

@frank-gevaerts If it helps I'm not very good at my own game, I've only got to 150 myself as I'm no MLG, glad to hear you enjoyed it!

@marcin-j Thank you very much, I wanted there to be a nostalgia factor of playing arcade games like Asteroid and Space Invaders as kids.

@bilalch213 Thanks for liking my game! I plan to make another version after the jam with much more bells and whistles, I'll post it on my Twitter when it's done so you can give that a go!

Graphics are simple but I always think simple and clean is best for ludum. I am amazed someone can score so high, I tried around 10 times and I think I got maybe 20/25 points!

I think this game would be much improved with a little sound, if you've not already seen it, there's a great little tool called sfxr that was made for a Ludum Dare years ago that lets you synthesis simple 8/16 bit sounds really quickly. Just a little pew pew sound would make the game really satisfying i think.

Good luck with your university project!

I was planning on going to freesound, but knowing that there's a specific place for Ludum Dare I will for sure go check that out!

@alexsogge Yeah that sounds like a great idea! I'll try that when I get back to my game after the jam, thanks for the suggestion!

@pedromgdo That's a pretty great score considering I only got to about 150 and I only play the Sims 4 and Fallout Shelter, great job! Thanks for enjoying my game!

@chaosround It was a little game I made on the side which happened to collide with the dates of Ludum Dare and I thought that technically it starts from 0 points and the more you shoot the more points you get, but your conclusion is toitally fair :) Thanks for liking my game!

@candlesan Yeah before I fully submitted I had some local play tester suggest that and I super glad that it payed off, I'm happy you picked up on that! I'm very tempted to make it for mobile, and if I do I'll "shoot" it your way!

@djee I totally agree, will add some music once the jam finishes, but thank you so much for enjoying my game! Turns out I was the only one in my class who entered so I'm feeling pretty proud when folks like you like my game!

@game-mon When the game jam is over I'm going to fully upgrade my audio and some add some funky fresh power ups to make the game extra fun! When I made this, it was timed well with the weekend of LD45 and I thought that I might as well slip it in as the player technically starts from 0. Glad to hear you liked it!
