Sheep Keep by zubspace
About
Sheep Keep is a simple 2D survival game made in 48 hours for the Compo.
Oh my! All sheep have gone mad! You start with nothing and just try to stay unharmed. But, how long will you last...? Good luck!

This is my second Ludum Dare entry! I’m a c# programmer and use Unity in my spare time. This time I tried to improve my art compared to the previous entry..
I hope you like the game!
If you want to know more about this project, here is a Post Mortem which also includes a timelapse. There is also a (hopefully) funny Comic Strip related to LD45.
How to play
Use WASD or Arrow Keys to move move around. Press CTRL or Space to use a pitchfork.
Used Tools
- Unity 2018.4.10f1 and Visual Studio 2019
- Krita
- FL Studio (Producer)
- sfxr for sounds
- ShoeBox for some sprite maps
- ZapSplat for cow sounds
- Free Upirjump Font
Post-Compo Changes
- Decreased sound effect volume (don't want to be responsible for broken speakers and hurt ears..) Sorry for that!

@mikymod Thank you! I made the sounds in the last hour with sfxr and did not have enough time to master them... Note to myself: Do music and sounds earlier and not in the last hour...
@yolziii Good job! Haven't had much time to playtest, yet, so your probably high up the highscore
@dob Yeah the game is very rough... The 2D Colliders are a bit strange, but I don't exactly know why... Unfortunately I did not make i difficult enough. I wanted to add a black sheep which later on shoots bullets like in a shmup but ran out of time.
@stinkykitty Lol, thanks. The music was kind of a last minute job and is a bit repetitive, but I like sheep very much.
@oceanm Yeah, the score screen could need some more love. Scoring itself is a bit strange because time bonus gives you so many points. Need to work on this more next time...
@rollersteaam Thank you! I need to learn how to master the music and sound effects, that's right. I simply did not have enough time to add North- and South-Animations unfortunately.... Phew, animating is some time intensive...
@silkworm-sweatshop Sorry about your ears!....
@corentin-sabiaux Thank you for your feedback. First time I used Krita to create sprites and I love it already! Lol, I like the ideas about different sheep personalities! Need to think about that...
@Korath Thank you for your honest feedback. You're right, there are a few things about the gameplay, which could be improved. I actually think, that the possibility of losing control of many characters makes the game more interesting. It's a balancing act:
Few players = Less health but easy to control VS Many players = More health but hard to control.
My initial idea was to add a "duplication pickup" to receiver more players and I would love to add morey more pickup types. I also wanted to add different kinds of sheep with different attacks, but time was against me.. :/
@grhyll Thanks! I'm sorry for the basic and too loud sound effects... I need to work on that more (and earlier) next time!
Played your game and it’s a really nice entry.
Had some fun. :)
The game have randomly generated levels, isn’t it? Or are they kind of looped?
Because I already performed a sheep genocide and looks like I am no closer to the end. xD

Briefly checked your LD44 entry and can I say that you really raised your art level. Congratulations on achieving new goals! :3
By the way, thank you for reviewing my entry. :3
Yes, the levels are randomly generated. I start with a square of walkable tiles and in later levels I add more such squares, overlapping existing squares. That way, the outer border of the level gets more complex, the farther you get. There are still many things, which could be improved, like making sure that everything is reachable after placing rocks or removing small areas of unwalkable tiles, but it works ok in the current state.
What took me the longest were the fences.. It's so time consuming to create all different fences and making sure, that they all work together...
I wanted to add different kinds of terrain, like swamps with water or a desert area, but soon I realized, that would be impossible in 48h. I also wanted to add another kind of sheep, maybe black sheep which shoots wool, but that got scrapped too, unfortunately.
@ogre Thanks! Second time for me in the compo. Still trying to organize my 48 hours without getting completely drained out.. But I'm quite proud of this one, even though there are many things which could be improved I think.
@flywolfe Thank you for your feedback! Yeah, I think the sprites came out better than I expected. (Krita is awesome!) I wasted some time trying to animate with Unity animation clips, because I did not have much experience doing so, but the process was quite nice when I got used to it. I totally forgot to add post-processing effects, lol! Note to myself: I should enable post-processing effects at the beginning and not as an afterthought...
@andrulonis Sorry for the sound effects :/ Made in sfxr which defaults to immensely loud and Unity does not give me clear feedback, how loud sounds are compared to each other or if the overall volume is ok. Or maybe I just haven't figured it out. Need to work on that and maybe upgrade my headphones...
Great job!
Weirdly satisfying to take down so many sheep.
