FromNothing by Copito

[raw]
made by Copito for Ludum Dare 45 (COMPO)

splash.png Made without an engine in raw c++ and opengl! I used a little bit of base code to open a window and create a gl context, everything else was from scratch during the 48 hours

I did make some armor for your character but... I didn't have time to implement it or have a convenient design for how it would fit into the game so... well i guess you're naked!

Also the ending for this game is unfinished... when the world goes green you've won!

An interesting entry, I think with a little more polish this could be really good. I like the progression and how it is starting wiht nothing. I didnt complete the game however as i kept getting killed. After I triggered the enemies, yuou have to avoid them to get a weapon? i never managed to get to the second alter as the bullets killed me.
Also, if you didnt realise, you can move faster if you do diagonal movement! :) cool game!

There is a bug with the camera. If player collides with the environment long enough, the camera starts to shake for a 1 2 second after the collision. However it is a non-engine entry which deserves respect, i totally understand and it is huge work for 2 days. Deserves tons of respect, this entry is rock solid!

Hey thanks for the feedback guys. I don't think you can go faster by moving diagonally however you do move faster when you're not hungry.. I have now verified the diagonal move speed bug but i think since it's mechanical it'd be against the spirit of the jam to fix it now

I think the camera shake is just against objects where i ran out of time to make a mask.. so you're colliding with the noisy messy alpha channel... sorry! :(

Cool little game, always impressive when people don't use a game engine during a game jam

I like the mood but the game feels a bit harsh at the start. I found the knife/sword but I constantly die to hunger :P
An enjoyable, gloomy experience overall.

@happysnake ah sorry i just realized i didn't answer your question. Yeah that's right first step is to spawn enemies, then you need to get a weapon and fight your way to the second brazier which is the end of the game. It might be possible to get to the second brazier without a weapon but... eh probably not :D you're supposed to get the weapon first anyway

Really awesome game. So cool that you made it without an engine. I love the entire aesthetic, and I like how it meets the theme. I managed to get the second altar then I got a weapon but after wandering around for a while I wasn't sure how to progress anymore.

Coolest overall game I've played from the jam so far!

thanks @piturnah i'm happy you liked it! Sorry there wasn't an ending once you hit the second alter and everything goes green that's the end of the game. Good job getting there without the sword you must have crazy dodging skills!

@copito I thought that was intentional! The dodging was super fun and made it really intense, it was my favourite aspect of the game actually.

Good Job on that. Pretty fun game. The start is a bit to harsh on the player to big with until you find what to do. Nonetheless, awesome job

hey @christophebessette thanks for playing my game! Do you have any thoughts on how i could have made the start easier? I considered making it so that you don't start to get hungry until you start moving but at the same time i wanted to push the player to move towards the apples rather than going and exploring the later areas
ChristopheBessette
07. Oct 2019 · 17:36 UTC
@copito You could maybe make the beginning linear, without much beside a basic path and a bit of surroundings to explore. This way the player will know where to go and what to do without doing much changes. Also I noticed there is a path down of the first altar with like no mobs whatsoever in it. I don't know if this was intentional, but I abused it every time I died

@christophebessette hm there shouldn't be any monsters until the first alter is activated, until then your goal is just to survive using the placed apples and explore the world until you find the alter. If you managed to reach the southern alter before the northern one then... eh that's a bug but i don't think that should be possible

Thanks for letting me play on the stream! A more "from scratch" game than most and yet feeling quite solid!

@igoreshka it might be your computer doesn't support a recent enough glversion, the game requires gles3 support I think that would mean a nvidia 8 series or above. Sorry about that

Some sorta programming legend here! What an impressive game. Love the art style and the clear signposting. I think someone else mentioned it but the double speed when walking diagonal is a bit annoying! Other than that, great game!

@rusty-jim i was like surely i didn't do something as dumb as double speed when moving diagonally.. that can't be right... double checked the code...
yep i screwed it up... BUGGER xD now i feel really stupid... never mind... sorry! i can't fix it now :P

Beginning is definitely a bit harsh, especially if you don't pick up the knife before spawning in the enemies. Swinging the knife around is pretty fun though. Feels pretty polished as far as presentation. All it's missing is a bit more content, a boss battle would've been cool.

@silkworm-sweatshop um you're not meant to be able to get the knife before spawning enemies :P... how did you manage to do that haha
silkworm_sweatshop

@copito Went left, filled up on apples without touching the thing that spawns the enemies. Then I went to pick up the knife and I was good to go :P.

@silkworm-sweatshop :P i gave this a go i think it requires you to know the map well enough that i'm fine with it as a... creative strategy :P originally you could only have 4 stored food which also prevented you short cutting to the end without getting the knife but i changed it right before release since i thought running out of food was a bit annoying while fighting monsters.... Never mind! :P

Very good entry, like playing it !
Very confusing before finding the resurrection stone, then it's pretty straight forward

Being a warrior is hungry work! Graphics were top notch for that style, controls were good. If the story is more fleshed out, this could have a lot of potential. The font needs to be slightly cleaner as the top of the 'E' and the 'H' looks glitchy.

Well done for creating this game without an engine. Nice background music and simple graphic is awesome. I really like how you communicate with the player what to do. I mean like the blood for the knife and I like the hungry reminder. Well done.

Simple and fun. The stress of finding apples in the early game really adds to the mood. Great job on the sound as well; love the movement of the skeletons. The combat was also engaging. Well done overall.

The initial challenge of having to quickly hunt for apples was interesting---I died several times before I found enough to survive! Controls were responsive. Music was also well-suited and set the tone properly. A hard game, but fun!

Wonderful graphics and movements. This bad boy couldn't last a few seconds without an apple (is he committing seppuku?), but once you get him well fed and find a weapon he kicks ass! I enjoyed the challenge of getting started, and when the tables turn. I spent a long time before returning to read that i was as far as i can get. Its a great compo entry! I really like the mood you've set, and kudos for writing it all without an engine.
It's a bit too hard for my liking after the enemies spawn so I never reached the weapon. Also would have really liked a checkpoint at the first altar, replaying the hungry sequence gets tedious

Thanks for the feedback all, I always find the difficulty of games hard to decide on. I like difficult and punishing games personally so this probably errs a bit towards my tastes! Sorry!
