0-Skies : A Minute's Adventure by Karanveer

[raw]
made by Karanveer for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

Title: 0-Skies

Based on the Theme: Start with nothing [LD45]

1 minute of sheer joy.

(title meaning/reason/message delivery: a protagonist starts from 0 and flies off to the skies)

Objective: Assemble your Plane whilst en route runway to fly and aim for the finishing checkpoint!

How to Access?

Windows EXE Downloadable: https://www.dropbox.com/s/of45v40ukitb5li/0-Skies.zip?dl=0 For people skeptical about downloads, I've deployed WebGL and published on itch.io so they can play via this link: https://karanveer.itch.io/0-skies Game Created for resolution: 1920x1080 SS2.png SS3.png SS4.png SS5.png

Assets: All Assets are created by me from scratch, except the modular "road tile prefabs" & and the final "landing spot" that's mid air, by Kenney Assets(https://kenney.nl/assets/3d-road-tiles && https://www.kenney.nl/assets/space-kit).. I started falling a bit behind schedule, i used it minimally though: 3-5 prefabs and repeated them to create track, and one asset from spacekit, that's all. Rest is all me, even for the sound i used my scooter and phone to record.

BTS Experience: This is my first LD participation. Started off to finish in Compo, but extended to Jam. Tried to make a minimal game play duration but with slight intensity, keeping it easy and simpler than complicating and achieving boredom sooner than expected. This was the result.

Looking forward to critiques, if any. Hope to learn more, and do more.

It was a good experience for me overall, despite the end product.

2 hours and 16 minutes still remaining but I've had a good time past 3 days.

I genuinely really enjoyed this - took me a few tries to get the controls down, but I had a lot of fun trying to piece together plane, I thought the sound effects could use a little more work, but the graphics were really nice, it baffles me that people can make nice 3D in such a short time. Well done.

I just woke up and Oh my goodness I never thought the very first comment would be a delight. Yes I tried to initially use start engine sound as well but I lost some time trying to rectify it, after loosing dedicated time I had to move on.. so much to learn but this made my day. Thanks!

Creativity & Use of theme is perfect. When you run off the track, is it game over? or is that an in-game easter egg? Was confused with what to do when you go off the track. Use of minute is a great way to keep the game short, fun & challenging at the same time. Played multiple times to reach the end. Could be more polished but never the less, good work!

Initially, the game did nothing. It was in my head to add a functionality to it if in case user goes off tracks, but due to rushing in last moments of submission i might have missed it. Thanks for that! It's fixed. When you go off tracks, it restarts the game in 2 seconds.

Yeah, sure just build the plane on the runway - pretty funny. Actually quite challenging to complete and looks great.

Cool concept and great execution, a very fun game !

The camera and the collisions can make it hard to finish on the first run, but I really enjoyed it, good job :)

Very nice and efficient graphics ! It was fun to piece the plane together. I really enjoy the game, took me three tries to win :-D Good job !

That's some serious challenge to start your first LD with a 3D game! :D This was well executed, and while the physics could be improved, you definitely got something convincing. I could also imagine multiple paths so the player can create his plane in different ways, with different parts giving their own bonuses, but I'm getting out of the possible scope for a jam...

Nice entry!

Yes, before it was a single holder camera. Then i decided to make it a bit dynamic ;) . Glad you enjoyed!

@gnomik Cool! well after i finished building it, it took me 2 tries to get me to the landing spot! Overall Thank you!

@cybikitty thanks! i wanted to start it as human soul collecting body parts, then switched to car from scratch and then my inner aeronautics genes kicked in and said, "why not planes?" plus it'll have an added functionality of flying! so yes that's how i got it.

@t-bo yes, ironically i was gonna use car parts build up on the way, ring a bell perhaps? :P Thanks anyhow, also your game is ditto what i initially had in mind i even had my straight roads ready with Object pooling because of unlimited spawn and reuse so..guess i just changed my mind. Thanks
again anyhow!

@rolly Hey Rolly! Thanks man!
Yes this is my first LD. Actually i always feared entering 3D world for years now and now slowly slowly im adapting to it and im finding it hard to go back to non 3D world, so i just went for it.
About multiple paths and different ways of creation. yes i do have plans for that!
most of my time went into SFX, as My scooter wouldnt start as its already cold here and i wanted to record that SFX for my propeller...so last minute switch from COMPO to JAM.
I played your game long before this comment and...kinda became challenging after a while, but amazing work! The voice acting part is what I LOVED THE MOST! :D
Thanks overall! Much appreciated, im planning to do more of this, feel free to follow/connect with me on here... :)

3D games are not a common thing in such a short game jams and I really enjoyed this one. You did a great interpretation of the theme and you even programed a plane movement for just a few seconds!

Good physics, graphics, and camera for a 3d game. I felt like the win condition was a little hard to meet, but it was fun getting there. I would have enjoyed it without a time limit even.

This is a creative use of the theme and you can really see the start with nothing part. For me it was difficult to control the play in the ground I was always hitting the walls and some of the walls made me fall from the world.

@jutjuan thanks a lot! :)
@joshua-young Thanks man, i tried to implement without the timer at first but since i wanted the player to experience some challenge i just went for countdown.
@pedro-rosa Yes, just remain on the road and while you approach turns, just press the s button to slow down and take your turns, this will increase your steering factor as well, so easier to control! :D Thanks for playing
@hkspadez thanks! :)

Good idea! I can't complete it on my crappy laptop (the bad fps only complicate the collisions and camera while playing) but I really like the idea of only 1 minute gameplay. Congrats!

Really good game, I like it a lot.
I failed a lot the first turn and the camera movement don't show every time the path to follow.
Congratulation to you !!! :v:

I like the concept and could imagine playing more than one level. The camera is a bit challenging, maybe an additional first person camera would be great. Finish the game on time, but it told me "Game Over" again. :D

A slow and smooth sound in the background could also improve the gameplay. :)

Nice game, but the camera was kind of annoying

The art style despite being very simple is very good. Some collisions are not going well and the plane stays embedded in some parts of the route, but otherwise the 1 minute gameplay it has been cool! Good job! :D

@nax-89 yo i dont know why is hat, as there's nothing heavy in it per se. As long as you have a below average machine it should work fine!
@whomakeworse Thanks i mean yes the camera was static at first but i made the changes to add some challenge to the user while he remains persistent. :D THanks for playing!
@orpartlu yes i am planning to make it into a commercialized game, stay updated. Twitter or Insta?
@crispypin i understand your concern, but i might add an option for a fixed angle later down the road. Thanks for stopping by and i loved your honest direct approach!:D
@crazyhomeboys yes i know that i will rectify it post jam dont worry! ALso, the borders are kinda friction full, just remain on the tar side of the road, ie, the middle..despite that there might be some collisions bugs ill fix that soon! :D

It flew ^^. And it only got me 20 minutes (what ? what do you mean it took you too long :p ?). Well, I arrived preety much at the 10 times (after falling from the track 3-4 times), but it was hard (for me) to not fly too high and miss the end point. That and I often missed one piece ( aka you arrived with 86,66666% of the plane).
It was nice to play, but (yup) as other said, the camera was sometime annoying, as I couldn't really see where I should go next. And for the falling off track, i think you can only fall off in the first line ? In fact, I'm pretty glad it's the case because I would have needed way more try that 10 to end this game otherwise :3

Anyway, GG and I'm glad you had fun for your first LD :)

This is overall a super simple and fun little game. I really like the graphics and the sound effects. The controls could have been a bit better, but is not a big issue. Overall a pretty good jam game. Well done.

Cool concept, really good job for a first entry. There was some glitchy behaviour still you could polish out (I fell through the map once when going up a slope for example), but that's to be expected. Grats on your first LD game anyhow.

I was so happy when I was able to fly, but it is not clear why the game has a timer and I did not fly for long. I believe that he is superfluous here at all. And there’s a bug that you can fly out of the road, it’s right at the very first turn - I advise you to try it. And it’s also not clear why we first select the screw, and only then the case - a strange solution. And so a fun game. I wish you good luck and continue to make games)!

Quite charming entry! There's a game here, add different tracks and parts for plane and you've a puzzle game. Or a racing game, depending on how you could obtain the parts. Congrats again on the first LD participation!

I found the controls really hard and the camera didnt helped at all, making me fall on the first curve many times. I could pass through it once but then i tried a few more times without success and rage quitted it.

Ond the other side the graphics are astonishing for a game made in a jam, specially a first entry from a single developer. The sound also seems good and the game design felt nice.

I guess the problem is my lack of ability.

Good job!
