Put the Haunt in this House by TheCrittersCove

[raw]
made by TheCrittersCove for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

Point-and-click game where you combine various items to summon different creepy creatures.

The game is fairly straight forward. You need to combine 3 items to summon a particular creature. There is no penalty for wrong combinations. Once summoned, the creatures will be spread throughout the house(and outdoors). Talk to them for hints.

A lot of things were put into this game last minute. So there are likely to be some bugs and poorly aligned graphics. If you come across them, don't hesitate to mention them in the comments. Any constructive criticism is welcome. Thanks!

Nice! The idea of the game can be expanded! Add more levels

Thanks @shaurya-juneja for the feedback! I originally had planned another 4 rooms, but time didn't allow for them. I'm considering continuing work on this game, even it's only a cute little personal project.

Super fun! This is really similar to a game called Little Alchemy where you drag ingredients around to make new things. When we made our little witch game we were thinking in the same vein! It would be cool to have more rooms, or to be a Witch Interior Designer and fill other people's homes with equally creepy friends.

I'm not sure why but your game made a bunch of my antivirus stuff go off. Maybe it's because its just an exe file on it's own? I don't know if anything is wrong with it, but I figured you should know since it might put people off playing it.

@nathan-wash A witch interior designer game actually sounds really cool. A bit off from what this game is, but I hope someone out there makes one.

@brokenmirrormedia What antivirus program do you have? Unfortunately this does seem to happen sometimes with Gamemaker games. I uploaded the game file to a site that checks various antivirus software and only a couple of them had an issue with the game.

@thecritterscove Chrome blocked the download, which I had to manually override, then windows defender (I'm on Windows 10) stopped me from running the exe. I still tried it out, (I love the cute aesthetic) but like I said I can imagine some people might not go through the hassle of bypassing those warnings.

It a good idea! Unfortunately, I could not understand how to create items. But a joke at the start very funny! : D

@brokenmirrormedia Hm....that might have been one of the reasons I stopped using Chrome. It would occasionally block files that weren't from known companies. I'm going to try looking into it, but I'm not sure how much can be done about it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention though.

@diamond The idea is to summon creatures with the provided items. Or did you mean you had no luck summoning creatures either? It requires 3 items to be selected before the 'summon' button will appear. Though honestly I could have done a better job with the instructions this time. Regardless, thank you for playing.

Norton was suspicious of your game. But I trust you won't try to hack me or anything. Good game, a bit short and had a few bugs at first. But after restarting it worked fine. I had fun

@hcursino Ugh...I might have to try different export settings so this antivirus issue stops. Thank you for ignoring the issue and playing!

Aaah!! Finally another point and click game :) I think you really nailed the graphics and music, everything was super polished and perfect. Loved trying different combinations, although I think there might have been a small bug when selecting items from time to time, but closing the summon dialog and opening it up again fixed it. Awesome job both of you!

Graphics and sound I like a lot, fits the game well. Finished the game with all creatures. Clues made sense and helped. One minor pet peeve some items highlight worse than others and you dont even realize they are selected and when you talk to the spider black bar covers the arrow so cant see it, other than that it's fine.

@karlipoppins Thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed it!

@digitaldude555 Good to know that the clues were enough to get all the creatures. Thank you for mentioning the highlight issue. It had briefly crossed my mind that they weren't highlighting consistently, but confirmation helps.

Nice idea. Good job.
Encountered some bugs: you can click on the tree through the summon panel, also sometimes you can open the summon window and be unable to select stuff because it thinks items are already highlighted when they are not. The highlighting is a bit hard to see on some items too.
I never got to see my skeleton because the game ends as soon as you summon the last creature.

Cute idea and execution. The art style is great! I too encountered some of the highlighting bugs, but for the limited time you had, it's a complete game and fits the theme well! Nice work!

I've made a very different, lighter-themed witch game for my previous LD so I was very interested in this one. The art is so pretty, I clicked on it instantly. *These are my impressions in no specific order:* The backgrounds are all great, simple in style with nice palettes. The introduction lays the story out nicely so that you don't jump straight to summoning. Ohh, the cursed cat's animated face is great! And the house instantly got spookier, that's a nice touch. The skeleton is hiding in the closet :D That's great. The bedroom has wrong overlap of pillow and the wooden part & the text escapes the box:

I got really stuck before I managed to find the tree (love the pumpkin face on them, tho), I was just trying random combinations, but that can get a bit tedious. The tree gave some helpful hints, at least. Then I got the remaining two easily. :) For the amount of items, I was hoping for more creatures, so if you ever decide to expand it further, it'd be really nice!

@ynneblack I'm so flattered that you think my art is pretty! I looked at your profile and I remember playing your LD43 game. That game has such beautiful colors and illustrations. I'll have to play your LD45 game later. :)

I'm amazed you noticed all the details, especially the cat's changing expression. I was worried no one would see it. Thanks for noting some of the issues. If time allows, I'd like to fix the game up a little and add a few characters. Hopefully I'll have some time to work on it before Halloween!

Excellent game. The graphics even if quite simple are really nice as well as the music. This reminds me of Little Inferno that i loved. Thank you for your game

Neat concept! The little intro cut-scene added some nice backstory, and being able to walk through the house to see your progress was a nice touch. Good job!

Very nice look art, and very fun concept. I had trouble finding combinations to make monsters, and there was a lot of clicking randomly with no success. Even using the hints from the monsters, I ended up having to check most of the ingredients. I was disappointed that the trombone didn't seem to be part of the skeleton, although maybe I was doing it wrong. Music and presentation were very nice. Sometimes I couldn't tell if an object was clicked or not, because the white halo indicator matched the color of the object. Very cool idea, and the intro was fun (thanks for making it skippable for later plays).

@dob Thanks for the thorough feedback! That's weird about the trombone. It is indeed used for the skeleton. Maybe the highlight issue meant you weren't selecting the items you thought you were?

Mild spoiler warning, the skeleton combo is:

1. Trombone
2. Bone Meal
3. Skeleton Key

@thecritterscove Thanks for letting me know - I must have missed that one. I think I was concentrating on the fish skeleton. All is right with the world now that trombone is included. :-)

I liked to see the evolution of the house ! But I think there is a little bug, when I try to talk with the ghost, it could not answer me. Except this, it is a funny little game !

I beat it. I had to start over though because I got stuck in the attic. The song had elements of studio ghibli which was nice.
