Live for Light by BustosMan

[raw]
made by BustosMan for LD 44 (JAM)

You, the player, are put through a gauntlet until you reach the light, located at the very end. The main goal is to have enough hearts to be able to open the door to touch the light, winning the game. Do you have what it takes to complete this challenge unscathed?

F to shoot.

WASD keys to move forward/back and turn left/right.

Spacebar to jump.

All moving, purple platforms will freeze in position when shot at.

White pylons can be shot at to temporarily allow you to teleport at the top of them by pressing T.

Green plat.png Teleport.png

The top of dark purple pylons can be shot to temporarily reveal a platform to jump on.

Have at least 3 hearts to complete the game.

When you run out of ammo, you may still shoot, but at the cost of a heart.

There are three pickups throughout the level.

Press O to open the door at the end of the level.

Touch the light to win.

Press esc to reset the level at any time.

Try a different browser if the game doesn't work. Some tablets with keyboards may be able to play.

Tech Used:

Unity, Blender and Photoshop.

Congrats for the submission, things that I think that could improve:
-The turning speed is too high, there could be some sort of slerp to process the input going on;
-In the End, the door requires multiple keystrokes of O in order to be opened, not sure if it's like that by design or if it's a bug.

It's definitely more of a bug. The door is supposed to fully open after one key press. @johnnydalvi

Nice concept and well presented but tricky to play for a left-hander using wasd etc so couldn't get very far. Any change of including cursor keys for input?

It was difficult to see where I was supposed to land, didn't end up using the ammo. Still was able to complete the level good entry!

The idea is fine, but the game feels very unfinished.

A fun game! The platforming works well but could probably do with some fine tuning. The main issue is depth perception in the game is tricky. Perhaps being able to independently use the camera to 'look around' up/ down and adding some trails onto the moving objects would help with this. A good jam

@jk5000 I initially planned for it to be longer by adding another area, but unfortunately ran out of time. Appreciate the feedback! @lagman9000 I also believe it would have been better to allow for panning of the camera to get a better view of the level. However, without it, more challenge is added to the game.

Looks like a little bit difficult, as jumping over the first balls always ends up outside of the scene. But the game works nicely, the difficulty level is just too high.

@tero-pulkkinen I appreciate the feedback. There definitely should be more avenues to avoid the projectile obstacles. Just wondering, did you happen to use the teleport feature? I think if you did it would make completing the level a lot easier.

It's kinda hard to finish the level, even with teleport. Also don't know why but the hearts don't replenish after i died (maybe it's a feature idk  ). But i think that if you had enough time to do some polishing and graphics+audio, it could have tourned out a good game

Not a fan of the controls at all. Why can't I, say, fire by clicking the mouse? Turning with WASD is also very counterintuitive; I'd prefer strafing with A and D and panning the mouse to control direction. I'm also curious about having to manually press "T" to teleport; why doesn't shooting a pylon just teleport me to the top? If I didn't scroll all the way through the screenshots and notice the text you inserted between them, I'd have been completely stumped what to do with the pylons.

@ryusui I definitely appreciate your criticism. I was thinking about letting the mouse control direction, but at the moment I'm not sure how to do that. To answer your question about the pylons, I think it would be ideal to let you continually be able to press T as long as it was green. That's so in case you fall off, you can still teleport to the top of it.
