You’ve done it this time. They all warned you not to get involved with the Dirty Cash Cult, but you didn’t listen. Also, you were in way over your head and weren’t able to come through on your promises. Now they’re demanding payment by 7 o’clock.. You’ve got to make some major cash fast. Nobody makes a fool of Penny Arcane! You’ve heard tell of an underground den close-by that’s crawling with treasure-hoarding monsters. It’s risky, but what other option do you have? Time to pay back your debt!

Penny Arcane is a rogue-like dungeon crawler where you play as a coin mage named Penny. Battle your way through the randomly generated dungeon acquiring quirky items and gold. Use your powerful coin magic wisely at the cost of health, but with the ability to heal with coins. Find shops, ATMs, and chests along the way and reach the end to fight a challenging boss with three heads. Be wary though, that doggo isn't the only thing that bites!

This game is MONEY. The music is fantastic and the mechanics are solid. The gameplay is not TOO frantic, which I like. One thing - the room on the 1st floor with the key - was the barrier suppose to prevent me from leaving? Because if so, I was able to get out (the top of the barrier has enough room for me to walk by).

Great job! The soundtrack obviously is amazing, the game itself plays and looks nicely(those coin effects!).
Would be nice to have a counter of collected coins.

Solid art and music! I personally found the gameplay getting repetitive quickly. I feel like the theme of 'use life to attack' creates an incentive to stick to normal attacks and stay back. Maybe if you have a system that rewards aggressiveness, like in Bloorbourne where you gain life back for attacking continuously and not just when you kill an enemy.

Good job!

I can't play it for some reason. On the title screen the cursor is confined within the upper left quadrant of the game window. I can't get it to go below halfway on the y axis so I can't click any of the buttons. My cursor leaves the window and loses focus. The title screen song bangs though! Any ideas? I'd love to try it out

Really nice aesthetic from the music and the art, and the combat controls pretty well too. At one point for some reason slime enemies stopped showing their HP bar, but it wasn't a big deal.

This was sweet, Risk of Rain vibes from the upgrade pick-ups!

I thought I wasn't able to continue on the 2nd level, but after closing the game and coming to review it, I realized you guys had that bug notice up. I'm gonna play again later and see how far I can!

@balance686 we made the game in GameMaker Studio, not sure if that provides any clues? Seems like it could be a display resolution thing, maybe changing resolution or temporarily disabling additional displays could help

@balance686 Hey, I just uploaded an updated version of the game with some bug fixes. I've added some resolution options that will hopefully solve the issue of your mouse getting stuck. The game will now start in windowed mode, you can toggle fullscreen with alt+enter. Let us know if it works!

@cileth that did the trick! Works properly in both windowed and fullscreen.

This is a masterful jam game! Incredibly polished and fun to play. The graphics and audio are stellar, it ties in perfectly with the theme, and it's definitely the best game I've played so far this jam. Extra points for random dungeon generation as well. GREAT job!

I felt like I was in a real dungeon! The magic, jellies, the dog(s), actually gave me PTSD!XD And even tho it's a pretty short game, the upgrades give the character development and it's fun to play multiple times. Good use of the theme, only having one health/money bar made me have to think more strategically than a usual dungeon crawler. And the boss battle is a classic, it's difficult without feeling frustrating because you have so much control and a variety of options for attacks.
And @royalsoup you should like make music or smthng, I'm srious
