made by PolyHatSteve for LD 44 (JAM)

As your aging father retires, it is your turn to take the throne. Unfortunately he retired late, so you are already aging and frail.

Regal pain is a game about increasing your reputation while trying to stay relative healthy. Try to gain as much fame as possible before any body part reaches 0!

Features: - Aristocratic debauchery - Dubious medieval healthcare

Instructions: - Click the buttons! - At the end of every season (5 days), you will take 1 damage to all your body parts. This increases to 2 dmg in year 2, etc. - ESC brings up options

Cool game! I was a very popular leader for my 1 year reign. I liked the strategy of figuring out when it was worth it to sacrifice some health, or when I should just stay home and lose fame.

A good take on the theme.
At the moment it's possible to find the best way out of each situation easily
I think it would help if the situations that you go through would be more complicated and gave a harder choice.
Otherwise, keep it up! Nice job!

I'm a beloved leader! Há!
Nice game you have in there, really well done. I love the fact that you can read the description of the events quite fast compared to a few games of the same genre that gives you a giant text so you can decide what to do.

Good game, pretty funny too and nice art! It would be cool to get some feedback on your performance at the end, I had 760 fame but I'm not sure if that's good or not.

Nice and light. Is rank Classy 540 good?

Nice game dude ! I really want new choices to have more fun ;) And i didn't understand the -1 for a year left. Why you choose to make it ?

Thanks for the kind comments all, glad you got something out of it :P

@firellon That's something I noticed as well, I'm planning on experimenting with some tougher choices and maybe even some random ones. Thanks for the feedback!

@kharibidus 760 is good! I think the highest I've gotten was around 800-900. I made ranks up to 1500, but I think you'd have to be extremely lucky to hit that. More feedback in game is a great idea, perhaps I could show a list of all the ranks like in civilization.

@pawciu 540 is quite good! I've had quite a few runs land in the 500-600 range, it's quite luck-dependent to get higher than that.

@mrbrooms Thanks, I'm thinking of making a post-jam version with more and better events! I added the -1 every month to add a bit of challenge, and to keep the player from getting an endless run. In theory, the player could continuously get events with safe choices like "stay home", and never get damaged for several years. That wouldn't be very fun, so the -1 is to encourage the player to take risks to increase their score before they die. It is worth considering though, so I'll definitely brainstorm some alternative mechanics I could use.

I liked this a lot, reminded me of Crusader Kings and other event-based games. Just wanted to see more variation (specially graphically), loved the minimalist UI though. Keep up the good work! (btw my score was 570!)

Excellent at 780! I tried to live a balanced life, and expertly juggled various "medicines" trying to prolong my reign. Cool game! :)

Move these kind of story games - and it works really well with the theme.
Balancing health with fame is cool, though it does feel that the healing options and their appearance (random?) determine if you last long or not. Making them more of an (expanding) menu of option after each era would perhaps give more choice.

Regardless, fun concept!

I really enjoyed your game! I had fun doing different body tradoffs as well as impatiently waiting for the medic (and they were coming at start of my reign the most, which was kindof annoying). Graphics were good and appropriate and sounds nicely accompanioning the atmosphere. There was also humor and original implementation of theme. This game has it all! Great entry!
